Why didn't they keep the threefold "Domine, non sum dignus..."?

“Lord, I am not worthy that…” in English.

I like that in the Traditional Latin Mass it’s said three times. It really puts emphasis on our unworthiness, and really lets us recognise how much God has done for us.

Why did they reduce it to once in the Novus Ordo Missae?

I don’t have an answer for you, but I smell another translation in twenty years… 😛

I believe they retained the threefold Confiteor, “mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa” with three strikes, which is far better than what it was as of a month ago. I’m a devotee of the Tridentine mass and the liturgy of St John Chrysostom in any case.

I think the ideas was to make the mass more “simple” and remove anything that was repetitive. shame because the 3 “Lord I am not worthy…” was done that way in honor of the Holy Trinity. The cofitieor was actually done again by the server after the priest took communion. that was removed in the 1962 missal but I think some places still do it.

Actually, we have treated this in another thread, and the answer from Rome is that only one strike of the breast is sufficient in the OF, even with wording similar to the Latin original.

This was my understanding of the “Kyrie eleison,” “Agnus Dei,” and “Sanctus” as well.

I have witnessed the pope strike his breast three times. There is a ruling from Rome (it is from 1978, but it is still applicable as it has not been revised or suppressed) that only one strike is necessary. However, in my opinion, this feels unnatural and just looks odd. I’ve never seen anyone do it. It is the custom to do it thrice, and I shall do it thrice. Do it once or do it thrice, it’s up to you. There is no rubric in the missal other than that you have to strike your breast; no number of strikes or intensity of strikes is prescribed. I think this rubric is a very poor one that needs to be more specific, but oh well.

A new translation of anything isn’t going to help get this right. Only a new Latin Typical Edition of the Roman Missal will correct it, or some kind of supplementary material released by the Vatican.

That’s what you get when you hire your translators from Reader’s Digest. 😃
