I may be a little late on this but I couldn’t find another thread on the issue. This blog post by Christian apologist Dinesh D’Souza (of whom I am a fan) explains his born-again Christian motivations. A key quote:*Horizon Christian Fellowship is a non-denominational evangelical church, part of the Calvary Chapel movement. There I found a Christianity that was really powerful and alive, one that infused all aspects of life.*He was raised Catholic but his family was admittedly not devout, and he does not indicate in this article of having had a firm grasp of Catholicism. He does not mention any animosity toward the Catholic Church, and he has even defended misunderstood events like the Crusades in his talks.

However, it seem by implication, he found the Catholic Church did not “infuse all aspects of life” whatever that exactly means. In this cursory examination of his explanation, it seems “what is truth” took a back seat to what felt “alive.”

On the other hand, in reading this article, it seems he never delved very deep into Catholicism and initially gave a look at so-called “born-again Christianity” because of “family unity.” One wonders what would be his reaction if he put on his trunks and goggles and took a full high dive into Catholicism. After all, he was once engaged to Laura Ingraham, who had a lively return to Catholicism a few years ago and was even interviewed on EWTN.

But speculation aside, I wished he would have addressed Catholic teaching and it’s warrant as the truth.

Thoughts?

Ingraham was interviewed by EWTN? Do you have a link?

I own D’Souza’s book, What’s so great about Christianity?, but I have not read it, yet. The blog post you provided does not make things clearer on his Catholicism. He is definitely not practicing his Catholic faith, but he didn’t explicitly say that he abandoned it, either. 🤷

My thoughts? This guy is a deep thinker whom I agree with on a ton of issues. Catholic. evangelical, (or Mormon :: gasp :: ) I don’t really care.

My opinion is that. like many evangelicals, they have more of a focus on fellowship relationships, and he has now very strong emotional bonds to parishoners which translate into the church and they nurtured him and he will not release that bonding. Leaving family and friends is very hard to do, but JESUS said we must do it if we are to follow HIM.

Eh. I would rather look to Bobby Jindal as an example of a Catholic who is Indian. Jindal 2012, woohoo!

Okay, I’m done :D:p

The King’s College surprised many higher education observers by choosing Dinesh D’Souza, widely identified as a Roman Catholic, as president of the New York City school. As a best-selling author and Christian apologist, D’Souza brings prominence and a network of influential leaders to the position.* But King’s decision to put a Catholic at the helm could create tension within a historically evangelical institution.**

“I’m quite happy to acknowledge my Catholic background; at the same time, I’m very comfortable with Reformation theology,” D’Souza told Christianity Today. “I’m comfortable with the evangelical world. In a sense, I’m part of it.”

“I do not describe myself as Catholic today. But I don’t want to renounce it either because it’s an important part of my background. I’m an American citizen, but I wouldn’t reject the Indian label because it’s part of my heritage,” D’Souza said. “I say I have a Catholic origin or background. I say I’m a nondenominational Christian, and I’m comfortable with born-again.”*

I agree with that. I think that Dinesh probably had poor Catechetical training as many have been, so that’s why he embraces a community at Calvary Chapel.

Perhaps if he knew there were also evangelical Catholics, and learned more about the true religion, he would come back. There’s always hope. Let’s pray to the Holy Spirit that he comes back.

Interesting, thanks for the link. It sounds like Windfish’s sentiment in post #2 may be correct then. Although D’Souza did say in that link, “I’m not doing Catholic apologetics, that’s for sure.” Does that translate to “I disagree with Catholic teaching and that’s why I don’t defend it”???

What are you trying to say? To follow Jesus you can’t have family or friends? Jesus didn’t love his disciples and have an emotional bond with them? I think you are misunderstanding Jesus.

Give him time. D’Souza is a bright and articulate guy. He’ll come home eventually. 😉 👍

I invited him to come chat with us. :o You never know.
Awesome! So if a poster with a mysterious screenname like DDsouza and religious affiliation: “Catholic? Protestant? Not quite sure” suddenly appears and posts erudite and complicated philosophical posts, we’ll have to wonder…:hmmm:
