Why do bad things continue to happen to me?

I lost a good job back in January of 2005, For two and a half years I looked for a new job, getting a couple of temporary jobs here and there but were unable to hold them  (?why, I don’t know?), having my health deteriorate, having to move back to my parents home (at my age, no less), and essentially going broke. Finally I managed to land a new job in a new city, with two more promising job prospects popping up here, only to lose it all again. Again! Now I have nothing, am nothing, again. Are you sure God loves me? I assure you, I did nothing wrong to get myself let go. I am a cradle Catholic who has never left his faith, not even in college when I was sorely tempted to. I’m no saint, I know, but I’m trying; however, this is the last straw. I just can’t take it anymore. It seems like God has abandoned me again. Again! If He was ever there in the first place. I know all about the “footprints in the sand” thing, but it’s just not enough anymore. It seems like God hates me. Why doesn’t He just kill me and be done with it? I hate my life right now, and the only thing that’s keeping me from ending it is the knowledge that Hell would be my destination if I did. I need a miracle, someone. Someone out there, help. Not Reginald Plum, though; all he ever does is pass the problem on to the next guy! I’ve never seen him answer a question himself yet. I need to hear from someone real.

Dear friend,

In no way do I wish to diminish the significance of what you are
suffering right now. But what I do suggest is that you consider the
degree of suffering God Himself was willing to endure for us. It wasn’t an act. He really felt the pain. Good Friday transcends time. The moment of His death was truly an eternal moment, affecting everyone who has ever lived or will live. By His incarnation and passion He is with us shoulder to shoulder, in our human situation. You are not alone and your suffering is not any more meaningless than His was. He is not finished with you. Hang on. Trust His love and you will be eternally glad that you did.

You are in our prayers.

Fr. Vincent Serpa, O.P.
