We don’t hate anybody, including the Baptists!

Baptists hate everybody, including themselves!

Bullocks!
They Baptists do NOT hate everyone.
They poke fun at us Methodists and have a laugh on the Pentecostals dime occasionally but HATE, I don’t think so.
Are you one of Moroni’s helpers?

I have some baptist friends. “Hate” is a little strong but i know what you mean. i think some of the dislike stems partly from the Scripture(sola scriptola) versus Traditions argument. Baptists make a very strong claim to keeping to what the bible says only. also, in some baptist circles open distrust of the Papacy is accepted and some see it as a man-made heirarchy that is corrupt, partly due to a lot of inaccurate historical information that is published. sadly alot of that junk is accepted as truth.

well I am surrounded by Baptists here, although we outnumber them here in the Valley, they are a majority in this state, and I deal with many youth ministers and pastors in a professional capacity, and of course have many Baptist neighbors and friends, not to mention relatives on both sides of my family for generations. I never met one who expressed overt hatred toward Catholics and the Catholic Church. I know plenty who misunderstand Catholic teaching, and hate practices they attribute to Catholics which in their minds go against the Bible, but I think sweeping generalizations like that in OP should be avoided, and are worse than useless for discussion in a forum like this.
Well said, Annie. I was raised Southern Baptist in the same state, but in the northern part. I went to Baylor University, the buckle on the Bible Belt. Baptists don’t understand Catholic belief and practice, but I’ve never met one who “hated” Catholics.

Well, whatever the degree of “hate”, or distrust, or misunderstanding, or simply ignorance… they will all be Catholic in eternity.

One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism… and it will be the one Jesus gave through His Church… not any of the rest.

Catholic teaching is thus: We are saved by Grace alone, through Faith alone, working in Love…

However our separated brethren have adjusted or misconstrued, or relied on men for their theology in the centuries after the Lord began His One Church, … we need to continue to set the examples in our living which will lead them to the fullness of the Faith … and always leave the light on and the door open.

Well to be honest since I’ve become Catholic I’ve found most Baptist to be some of the most reasonable of the Protestant Churches. I do have too get through a lot of misconceptions but I’ve found Baptists honestly want to hear what you have to say.

Oh please…don’t decipher it, like you never lied…they didn’t know he lied they just ASSUMED he was Catholic…lighten up.
I’m not “deciphering” anything; the poster quite explicitly said that his friend lied:
He wanted to go on to defend our faith so he lied and said he was Baptist again.
As for “lightening up,” the defense and propagation of the Faith are very serious matters, and I think that one is entitled to object when someone, meaning to defend the faith, in fact does something, such as lying, which harms his case.
Then they hate Catholics…
It does not follow that if they hate something that we believe that they also hate us.

As if hating Catholics is a surprise to you. Yes, he lied, so what. Have you ever lied? If you say no, your lying…
this thread has nothing to do with lying, so stick to it.

Oh Amgid, as easily the most hate-filled person on this forum, you have no standing to talk!

As if hating Catholics is a surprise to you.
I neither stated nor implied that hatred of Catholics was a surprise to me. Where do you get that?
Yes, he lied, so what. Have you ever lied? If you say no, your lying…
Nor did I ever say that I had never lied. I have, I am sorry to say. But that is no reason why I ought not to suggest that lying is not a good thing to do.

This thread deals with anti-Catholic prejudice, particularly among Baptists, so it is not ungermane for me to suggest that lying undermines one’s efforts to combat that prejudice. Moreover, the original poster specifically mentioned lying as a relevant detail.

I would also suggest that you improve your spelling and punctuation if you want people to take your posts seriously: so what. should be so what?; your lying should be you’re lying. Also, although it is, I think, perfectly okay for you to suggest that I am off-topic and that I should stay on-topic, it is not, I think, your place peremptorily to order me to “stick to it.” And yes, this last paragraph is perhaps off-topic. I await your next sputter.

Before attending any church, but having such a pull to go to a Catholic church, I explained my situation to two close Baptist friends. I asked them why does everyone dislike Catholics?
The response was…because they don’t have a personal relationship with Jesus…they don’t have Jesus in their heart.

I do understand what they mean…now. I didn’t then.
Basically, they are against “going through the motions” and not being on fire in a way that all you do is talk about Jesus.

I don’t think they hate Catholics, but the ones they have met have left a bad impression. The other Catholic in our group announced to everyone during Bible study she doesn’t own a Bible because Catholics don’t read it  😦 and she was staying Catholic because she was born a Catholic. Not a good reason to someone who decides you should make your own decision.

Our conversation let me know that I better learn my faith, be able to answer questions or at least try.

I have to say as a Christian who spent a majority of my adult life as a Baptist or some variation thereof, I was offput by the majority of Catholics in my life. I did not consider them Christians at all, and if you mentioned Jesus in front of them, they called you a holy roller.

So, this lack of visible love for Christ is, unfortunately, the impression that most Evangelical-like Christians have of most Catholics, it’s what they see. Most Baptists/Evangelicals are not ashamed of their faith and are quite open to love Christ and speak His name in conversation. It’s an integral part of everyday life.

Many Catholics, especially in modern times, have not lived their faith well, which has left a firm impression out there that their faith is dead.

I am a Catholic now, and I’m seeing a whole new side to Catholicism and Catholics who are genuine in their love for Jesus Christ. But they are hard to come across or at least spot out there among their less than faithful compadres who are tarnishing the reputation of the Catholic faith among the other Christian communities. I think it’s going to be up to the rest of us to regain the reputation and trust of Catholicism among our separated brethren, it’s a tall order, but one we will have to have the courage to take on.

Thank God for these forums which are such a valuable resource for us who are coming to understand our marching orders!

Wow, you hit the nail on the head with that one…I can not count how many times a fellow Catholic has rolled their eyes when I talk about our faith, Jesus, when I try to explain to them the origins of out tradions, etc.,

Sometimes I find myself in a situation were a fellow Catholic is misinterpreting the RCC in a conversation amoung irreligious or Protestant participants.
When I put in my 2 cents to explain or correct the erroneous statements I get this “oh shut up, what do you know you” look…or “there he goes again”

Their hatred has become their stumbling block. If indeed the baptists think us catholics are wrong, they should put forth their points with love and compassion. It is bad to hate especially when it comes to expounding the truth. Because even before they speak, their hatred has blocked their message from going forth. Similarly, we should not hate them either but expound to them with patience and love.

Hatred is an obstacle to spreading the GRACE of God.

At the risk of provoking the ire of some of the post-ers: I am a convert of some 30 odd years. As a non catholic I went to many different denominations in my quest for God and his true church I say from experience that most if not all of the protestant churches distrusted all other denominations and especially the Catholic i.e. the Roman church. Hate is maybe too strong a word but not totally wrong. When ‘they’ claim that you are not at all Christian, that you are in fact part of the coming Antichrist’s church, won’t allow Catholic children to ‘contaminate’ their children I would say that ‘hate’ is very very close to correct.
I found the one true church started by Christ himself and I am not afraid to say so, if that hurts some non-catholic feelings oh well. I do believe that all non-Catholics need to be brought back to the True church and do not make excuses for that belief. Of course it needs to be done with Love and Understanding but it does need to be done.

Excellant… you have said it all and well

If only more Catholics were not “afraid to say so”. I often use Luke 17:10 to “excuse my behavior” in saying what I feel needs to be said… it is my “job”, and it does need to be done.

Yep, you “provoked” me … to respond with agreement.👍

Okay, “hate” is the wrong word, but “buried animosity” is what I’ve found. It’s as if the Baptists I’ve spoken with just automatically assume I’m wrong in whatever I say.

Part of the problem is that Catholicism is more complicated than the set of Baptists beliefs. From what I can tell, Baptists keep things extremely simple.

Another part of the problem is that Non-Catholics get bad information, misinformation, the sob stories, the personal stories about Catholicism from Catholics who don’t go to church, who don’t know what the Church teaches, who are angry for personal reasons at some part or person in the Church. So there’s a lot of distortion out there.

I just recall a number of years ago, the Baptists wanted to launch a big conversion program among Chicago Catholics, and their statements implied that Catholics were not Christian. Back then I felt, and I still do, that if you really want to convert and evangelize, you should go after the non-Christians first: there’s a big world out there.

Yes, a friend of mine went on a Baptist Forum and was booted off because he said he was Catholic in the questionare. He wanted to go on to defend our faith so he lied and said he was Baptist again. They let him in but not without the question “Do you think you’ll be saved, and if so how”? Well he said “By the blood of Jesus Christ”, they let him in. When he talked about Catholisism and the next time he went to log on, there was a big sign that read “BANNED FOREVER, HE IS A CATHOLIC TROLL”. Geez, a little extreme I would say. See, they won’t let the world in because they are afraid people will leave their church if they know other avenues. All you can do is pray for them.
I am a member there. An RCC or an EOC has to walk a very fine line there.

All internet personas aside, My dad (baptist) loved my mom (catholic). My aunt is baptist practising in a non-dem church. She loves and trusts Jesus. Since we are both cancer survivers, though she is still suffering, we have had good talks about the Lord. She believed of my conversion to Christ without question when I told her about it. When I first had a conversion of heart I was scared, she told me to let go of my fear and trust Jesus. She is a good soul and actually nutured me back to church. Me being Catholic, I went back to my church. This thread is hateful.😦 Tim
