Why do Baptists hate Catholics?

The attention span of one person is about 30 to 45 minutes. Once you get longer than that most people’s minds wander. That is way the Liturgy must have the people doings things too during worship. And Homilies are kept short.

Police snipers often rotate roles with the Observer each 30 minutes. And classes must allow for a recess each 45 minutes ideally.

Long sermons or discourses are not effective. People need to learn that they want to say in less that 45 minutes. Ideally 30.

IHe did not so much speak ‘to’ us as speak ‘at’ us. What is the sense of preaching for that length of time!!
i hate when any pastor does that… There aren’t many priests who do that but i do know of one… don’t go to his Church when i can help it…

Out of all the churches I found the Baptist to be the most critical and negative of other religions down to taking good time away from Sermon and Scripture and wasting time on being critical in the process…nothing Christian about that.
it could be that the Baptists are the most… i hate to say it, but “ignorant” of what true Christianity is all about… Either that or they just can’t “walk the talk”… (which, unofortuantely, is kind of a a univeral thing…😦 ).
Adoration is the same thing and in my opinion just as devotional if not more than running around hysterically or semi-hysterically “on fire” for Christ.
😃 … got a mental picture…
Also they do not understand Christening a baby bc they believe a baby has no conception of being Baptised by water and it should be a choice one openly makes with all of their heart before God.
a baby can sense 'things" better than adults can… I believe babies should be baptized immeditately after birth… doesn’t it seem like the people who are baptized as infants… are stronger Christians most of the time??
Christianity is the root of Catholicism.
Catholic IS Christian…
Catholics are quieter and Baptists are louder, doesn’t mean Baptists love Jesus more, though most of them think the contrary.
i think Catholics love Jesus far more than Baptists, as a general rule, for one simple reason: Catholics KNOW Him better… I used to go to Baptist churches… It was only when i went back to the cahtolic church that i began to really KNOW Jesus… to be intimate with Him… through the rosary, the Mass, eetc… I was LoST till i came back… no church i ever went to hadthe power to do much for me… to get me totally into Jesus…
So they think the Vatican is corrupt…it’s all about the money and the gold,
i heard the pope actually lives a very simple existence… his room has only a bed and a table and a lamp & that’s about it…
Putting on a big show for “your” entertainment all in the name of GAWD,
It seems a lot of churches are more entertainment than… reverence… etc…
So what’s the difference between a “Cafeteria Catholic” that cant quote scripture
I don’t know where this myth comes from. True, some Catholics who don’t attend daily Mass… or whwatever… may not know the bible as well as baptists or whomever… but if a Catholic goes to daily Mass for 3 years he will hear the entire Bible… He may not be able to quote chapter & verse… but he likely knows the bible better than most Protestants do… I have often heard Protestants say (with amazement in their voice): You really know the Bible… Yet at taht time, i didn’t feel i knew it very well… Hmmm…
" they leave Church and go right back out and do the same thing or worse…but there’s one small difference…atleast we Catholics’ are willing to admit it!
Yeah, its interesting how they accuse catholics ofgoing to confession and then going right back to their sinful ways… and yet they do the same thing… only without confession… also, most people i know who go to regular confession… do NOT take sin lightly… The Catholics who take sin lightly don’t bother going to confession…

I don’t know about you but I seem to have a very short attention span, particularly when I am bored. I once attended an ecumenical meeting where the preacher was a Baptist. He apologised before hand that ‘Baptists have a reputation for long sermons and his would be no different’, I thought he was joking…he spoke for exactly an hour!!

The first 5-minutes were very good. Then it started to wain. After a further 10-minutes, he lost me. I remained lost until he had finished. I would have got up and left were it not for the fact everybody knew we were the Catholic contingent and one of our number was snoring very loudly from the front pew! This was the only break in his monologue.

He did not so much speak ‘to’ us as speak ‘at’ us. What is the sense of preaching for that length of time!!

Sorry to derail the thread.

Blessings and peace
You didnt derail anything, always glad to hear back from folks, especially when they can feel my pain lol. I was particularly tortured by a college roommate that was Baptist. She was so nice when she wanted to move in with us and turned into a lunatic that thought Catholicism=Satanism. So I guess I am a little bitter haha. One of my best friends and I have an old joke called blazing glory. Her dad took us to a baptist sunday service and the pastor went on for 2 hours (we were in high-school) we eventually nodded off and woke up very quickly when he began pounding the podium about God coming down in a blazing glory. he was screaming at the top of his lungs and flailing around for the television crew that was filming him. my bestfriend and I really shouldnt laugh but when your in high school its utterly hysterical. lol

One of my Theological Professors is a Baptist.

I’ll ask him…AFTER he marks my papers

I’m FAR from high school days… but thought this was very funny! thanks for making me 😃 …my day was kinda gloomy… there for awhile… .

I do not know about the circustances of the English Reformation. But the fun fact is that the Protestants who actually had to figth with Catholics for the Reformation like the Lutherans or the continental Reformed are nowhere as anticatholic as the Baptists.

In my opinion the Baptists started as a offshoot of the Calvinist branch of the Church of England and after being exiled and presecuted they learned not to criticize the Church of England directly. Instead they went for a straw man, the Catholic Church that was mostly illegal them. So anticatholicism became institutionalized to the extent that historical falsifications like the Trail of Blood have to be devised.
And issues of social class, North vs South, urban vs rural, inmigrant vs nativist have fueled the Baptist anticatholicism in the US.

Most of it is fear of the unknown. The Baptists I know (including the Baptist church I attened in the past) arent big on Theology and in depth Bible study and stuff and are more inclined to simplistic concepts. For example though the Bible warns against getting drunk they have a fear of alcohol, Im not kidding, just opening a beer infront of them makes them uneasy and causes them to distrust you. Another thing is the word “Catholic”, you mention that your a Catholic to them and their mind causes them to tune you out as if the devil were speaking to them.
You’re not kidding about the alcohol thing. I go to a Baptist Church where they serve grape juice for Communion.

The Baptists hate everybody! They hate the human race!

zerinus
that sounds a little “out there”… but on the other hand… it does seem like the ones i have known. are… well… not too “loving” toward anyone…

but what do you expect from people who are separated from the real Christ (HIs Church)?

Hi distracted, I really enjoyed your post. Looks like you read the whole thing and put some thought into the reply and that is my frustration with Baptists bc they deny everything and put no thought into why they are against the Catholic Church. It just seems to be a geographical and sociological thing. My mom did it and I will too, or my pastor said x, y, z without doing any research of their own. Which brings me to a quote from you:

It’s such an insult that these Baptists feel that our religon is second rate and we dont follow the Bible. Unbelievable. They believe all Catholics are Cafeteria Catholics. It’s unnerving to me that they are shocked that we know Biblical Scripture bc somewhere down the line they obviously have been taught that we dont. I too often wondered where did this myth begin, what bafoon told them that, and to top it off they are the most self-righteous people with their arms folded ready to pounce anyone that disagrees with them. Their entire belief system is an oxymoron to me and I have long given up on attempting to have an intelligent conversation with people that are die-hard Baptist bc they are closed off like a cult to anything objective, or non-Protestant, downright hostile about it, and it goes absolutely no where. 🤷

yes, i know what you mean… Sometimes I talk to this lady who professes to be a Christian (but lives like almost everyon else “in the world”)… and she knows i am a strong Cathlic… but one time she tried to give me this booklet about the sciptures they were discussing in some Bible class or something… I told her i already had too much literature to read, etc… andthat she should probably give it to someone esle (I knew i woiuldn’t read it because, frankly, i only read Catholic literature these days, unless its is some history thing or what have you… and even then, i much prefer catholic writers…) but she insisted till i just caved in and took it… She should have given it to a “pagan” or something… don’t know if she was trying to get me away from the Church or not (probably)… we used to be able to talk about spiritual things but lately every time i mention anything at all to do with Christ or the scriptures or whatever, she just changes the subject to some worldly topic… & a not very interesting worldy topic at that… something i could NOT possibly care less about…

i don’t get it. Maybe her husband told her not to talk to me because it might confuse her about her beliefs… Some peole are really lazy when it comes to learning about Jesus and the Church (history/techings, etc…) . but if feel that if you love Jesus, it seems to me you would want to know about him… & the beginnings of his Church on Earth… It seems that you would be interested in the Catholic Church if for no other reason than that it is so big and so OLD!! But some people are just interested in… worldly htings, i guess…

Anyway…

Just kinda wondering: were you raised Catholic? Were you catechized as a child? I wasn’t… had to learn on my own several years ago…

God bless…

Yeah I was, christned as a baby, first communion at 7, confirmed at 16. St. Helen was my confirmation Saint. Ofcourse in my twenties, when I moved from Louisiana and was in the Protestant belt, thats all I was surrounded by and naturally heard every story in the world why Cahtolicism is bad and it even had me questioning my own faith and religion from time to time. It was frustrating, but when I hit 30 I did my own research and with the things I already knew from CCD, CYO, and my faith growing up, I realized all along that these people didnt know what they were talking about. What they were infact doing was distorting scripture to satisfy their beliefs, they skewed history to justify their actions, and I saw first hand the biggest lot of hypocrisy within the Protestant and Baptist religion that I had ever seen anywhere. Thats when I truly learned first hand that I was very fortunate to be raised by my parents in the Catholic faith.

Also I have to commend you for that bc it is very very very difficult to do that as an adult when you have been taught something else for so long. I truly believe that 50% of the rude behavior that comes from some Protestants is the result of a blind faith of their teaching.

God Bless you too

A bit off topic but we used to have a PP who preached for a maximum of 6-minutes. He was a brilliant preacher and ex journalist. Very talented with the spoken word. Very condenced but action packed throught provoking homilies. You always took something from them

…and of course 6-minutes was too short to lose interest so most folk heard every word. 🙂

Blessings and peace.

this might sound odd but I really like long homilies… (only if they are interesting and most of the time, they are… ). 🙂

Horses for courses. I begin to switch off after about 10-minutes and lose it completely after about 20-minutes.

I have sat through some excellent homilies only to have the embarrassment of asking others how it finished and what was said after I switched off! :o

This desire is understandable by us Catholics but, Trust me, it may not be a good idea, Because…

My entire family (except me and my youngest son and a daughter-in-law) are Baptists. I thought how wonderful it would be for them to attend the BEST Mass of the year with all it’s ancient ritual and scripture - lots and lots of scripture. The lighting of the Easter candle, the baptisms, confirmations and First Holy Eucharist - how wonderful for them to witness how our faith has preserved the way the early christians used to worship!!! After all, that’s what Baptists seem to harp on - is getting back to how the early christians worshipped, right?

Well, it was a bomb!!! They did not “get it!” I couldn’t believe it, I was stunned! I didn’t know what to say.

So, it may be a disappointment for you and boring and too long for them. I won’t ask them to come again.
Well yes Dian, the way I see it, no Christian likes to hear that they do not have the full Truth, I think it is much easier for them to simply accept the untruths ,and the misunderstandings they hear from various members, teachers and leaders, than to, seriously look back themselves into Christ’s revelation as handed down throught the ages by those commissioned to do so…the Apostles.:)Peace, Carlan
