Why do Catholic weddings have to be in a church?

Why must we be married inside a Catholic church by a priest rather than outside by a priest when the Pope can conduct mass outside (Madison Square Garden)? This confuses me because God is everywhere. Is it because the Pope needed a huge venue, whereas’ we have a choice? 🤷
