Why do Catholics baptize infants?

I am a Protestant, who recently I’ve been searching for a deeper relationship with Christ. After attending many masses and being blessed I am digging deep into the truths that I’ve never known about Catholics. My husband is quite reluctant, but he does has a question. Baby baptism was something that the Pagans did, and he wondered why the Catholics adapted this practice into the church? I can’t find any answers in any of the literature I am reading.
