Why do Catholics believe in purgatory if it is not in the Bible?

hi, i was having a conversation with my niece and she asked me why do we catholics believe in purgatory if it is not in the bible. so i decided to ask catholic answers so that she can have a better answer. she will read the answer herself. my question then is why do catholics believe in purgatory if it is not in the bible?
