Why do Catholics choose confirmation saints?

What can you tell me about the reason saints are chosen for confirmation, and the relationship between them and those confirmed?
 
Catholics traditionally have chosen a saint’s name for confirmation to highlight the importance of the communion of saints and their dependence upon the saints as intercessors and friends.
