Why do Catholics fast an hour before mass or receiving the Eucharist whichever it is?

Fasting, even for one hour before mass, brings me clarity.
I ALWAYS fast before mass - usually 12 - 15 hours before.
Then one hour afterwards.
For years and years I’ve done this routine.

We believe the Eucharist is the Body Blood Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ (in addition to very deep other things), and thus receiving the Eucharist is a reverent occasion. So, fast.
