Why do catholics leave the Catholic Church

=Christian Soul;10747276]Except it appeared to me when Elizabeth 502 said “a baptized member is always a member” assuming he or she does not formally renounce to his or her bishop, that it means a baptized Catholic is always a member of the Catholic Church. Though perhaps just technically and an unfaithful member of course.
ONLY Partially TRUE;

It’s True that Baptism MARKS ALL as children of God

But the baptism has a part II: making the baptozed children of God throgh that particular faith. Thus a "baptized Catholic, always in a sense remains “a catholic”🙂

Here’s the thing, theology is such a complicated subject. If we are earnest in our desire to know the truth, at some point we really have to put some faith into it which is beyond reason. Honestly, smart theologians from both sides have debated the Papacy for centuries, and haven’t come into a conclusion. The Catholics believe their arguments are right, the Orthodox believe their arguments are right. How can we figure for ourselves which is right? We have to follow our own conscience and pray to God that He guide us to the truth.

So anyone who puts forth the effort and time to read into the issue can come to a conclusion on either side of the debate. I’m not saying that anyone who reads everything will almost always become Orthodox, or someone else will argue that someone who reads everything will almost always become Catholic. It is a complicated issue and as long as we do our due diligence and are honest in everything we do on our path towards one or the other, I don’t think God will take it against us. I’m not trying to promote indifferentism, but just trying to acknowledge the fact that some theological issues are really beyond us individually. So my point about catechesis is not to say that anyone who remains Catholic and not become Orthodox are poorly catechized. CS Lewis is brilliantly catechized, he remained Anglican. But if we put forth the effort and end up where we end up, how can God take it against us? This is where mercy and faith come in.
Indeed I can buy into that. Sometimes I think Christian people or even non Christian people of faith forget this truth. They can be so determined in their belief that their arguments are right, they end up forgetting in the process that this simple truth remains. No matter in what faith they end up, for example including the 3 you spoke of, Catholic, Orthodox, or Anglican, it takes at some point… faith. God bless you and peace be with you in yours.

Well, ultimately someone is right. But can we really hope to know that conclusively? Do we all have the capacity to learn about everything? We just need to be sincere in our desire for God and if we’re wrong, I’m sure God will fill in whatever is lacking. Again, this is not to justify indifferentialism, just an acknowledgement that we are mere mortals who cannot know everything.

That’s what I always thought & what I thought I said. That according to Catholic teaching, they always remain in a sense, Catholic. Btw (by the way) 🙂 God bless you too. I sometimes don’t know all the internet slang myself but I saw Elizabeth502 jumped in for the save. 👍

At least to me as an Orthodox, I would say that I am Catholic. But of course we have our own definition of what “Catholic” means based on how we understand the Church Fathers have always taught what “Catholic” means. And it doesn’t mean being in communion with the Pope of Rome.

You’re preaching to the choir in me. 🙂 I’m sure God has the capability to understand us. And if we’re wrong, in the end we can only leave it to Him to know our heart and in our Christian faith to His mercy.

Of course. I understand.

I’m in the process of leaving for one reason–Pope Francis. I really, really can’t stand this guy, and there’s no way I’m going to subjugate myself to his style of leading. Francis needs to stop with all of the phony humility and start acting like a pope should. Until then, I’m out of the Church. I’m done. I’m back to being a Methodist.
That’s your reason?

I’ll bet there’s more to it than that.

And I don’t think the Pope’s humility is phony.

You should reconsider. If you really want the Truth, join the Roman Catholic faith.

God Bless!

Maybe they feel Catholicism and the Catholic God - is not the Truth
Two things here, “Catholicism” and “the Catholic God.” Now for a faithful Roman Catholic educated in their faith, the former follows logically from the latter. However, the latter, “the Catholic God,” is much, much simpler than “Catholicism.” The reason for this is that God in fact is entirely Simple, whereas a human being, and the human race, by contrast, are actually quite complex. And Catholicism is supposed to be the means of application of the one to the other.

So it is a far cry, from believing that the Catholic God is God, to believing that the Catholic Church is God’s Church. Many, many more believe the former than do the latter. Many believe in the Catholic God without being explicitly aware that that is what they believe in. But God is Love.

Do you believe in Love?

Catholics hold this position for some VERY good and solid reasons

1st Historical Tradition is followed: God always, everytime and everywhere CHOOSE one man to lead His “chosen people”

Noah; Abram; Moses; David; Jacob; the Prophets; Judges; John the Baptist; Jesus Himself; and then Peter Mt.16 is Precise; clear and singular: “YOU Peter” & “MY Church” singular.

2nd. There was NO debate or dispuite within the ranks of the Apostles or deciples

3td. The Early Fathers recogonized this reality:

The Early Church Fathers understood from the beginning that Peter and his successors held a place of primacy in the Church.

Clement of Rome
Accept our counsel and you will have nothing to regret. . . . If anyone disobeys the things which have been said by him [Jesus] through us, let them know that they will involve themselves in no small danger. We, however, shall be innocent of this sin and will pray with entreaty and supplication that the Creator of all may keep unharmed the number of his elect (Letter to the Corinthians 58:2, 59:1[A.D. 95]).

Ignatius of Antioch
You [the See of Rome] have envied no one, but others have you taught. I desire only that what you have enjoined in your instructions may remain in force (Epistle to the Romans 3:1 [A.D. 110]).

Irenaeus
But since it would be too long to enumerate in such a volume as this the succession of all the churches, we shall confound all those who, in whatever manner, whether through self-satisfaction or vainglory, or through blindness and wicked opinion, assemble other than where it is proper, by pointing out here the successions of the bishops of the greatest and most ancient church known to all, founded and organized at Rome by the two most glorious apostles. Peter and Paul, that church which has the tradition and the faith which comes down to us after having been announced to men by the apostles. With that church, because of its superior origin, all the churches must agree, that is, all the faithful in the whole world, and it is in her that the faithful everywhere have maintained the apostolic tradition (Against Heresies 3:3:2 [inter A.D. 180-190]).

Clement of Alexandria
[T]he blessed Peter, the chosen, the preeminent, the first among the disciples, for whom alone with himself the Savior paid the tribute [Matt. 17:27], quickly grasped and understood their meaning. And what does he say? “Behold, we have left all and have followed you” [Matt. 19:2 7, Mark 10:28] (Who is the Rich Man That is Saved? 21:3-5 [A.D. 200]).

Tertullian
[T]he Lord said to Peter, “On this rock I will build my Church, I have given you the keys of the kingdom of heaven [and] whatever you shall have bound or loosed on earth will be bound or loosed in heaven” [Matt. 16:18-19]. … Upon you, he says, I will build my Church; and I will give to you the keys, not to the Church; and whatever you shall have bound or you shall have loose
and, not what they shall have bound or they shall have loosed (Modesty 21:9-10 [A.D. 220]).

Letter of Clement to James
Be it known to you, my lord, that Simon [Peter], who, for the sake of the true faith, and the most sure foundation of his doctrine, was set apart to be the foundation of the Church, and for this end was by Jesus himself, with his truthful mouth, named Peter, the first-fruits of our Lord, the first of the apostles; to whom first the Father revealed the Son; whom the Christ, with good reason, blessed; the called, and elect (Letter of Clement to James 2 [A.D, 221]).

Cyprian
With a false bishop appointed for themselves by heretics, they dare even to set sail and carry letters from schismatics and blasphemers to the Chair of Peter and to the principal church [at Rome], in which sacerdotal unity has its source" (Epistle to Cornelius [Bishop of Rome] 59:14

God Bless you!

Don’t we have enough threads to debate about this? And my point is this, for everything you have posted here, I have tons of stuff that say otherwise. I mean, really, do you or I have time to read all of these? And even if we do, are you or I smart enough to figure this thing out? Because no one has figured it out for at least 1000 years. I’m not going to debate you on this thread, this thread is not for that. If that is what you believe, good for you. God bless you for it. That is not what I believe, I do not think that is the truth.

Well it’s like you said earlier, people believe they have it figured out and are right. But there certainly is not agreement among various theologians as you said. Theologians who as you said are smart. So well said.

The Catholic church HAS to be God’s “church”; a TERM first used in Mt 16 when He Christ /God choose to found it on Peter; and he himself being its essential Corner Stone.

Eph. 2 19-22
“Now therefore you are no more strangers and foreigners; but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and the domestics of God,** Built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone**:
In whom all the building, [singular] being framed together, groweth up into an holy temple in the Lord.[singular] In whom you also are built together into an habitation of God in the Spirit”

NOT ONLY THAT BUT

Every single reference to “church” in the bible referes directly and exclusively to todays Catholic Church. NO other “CHURCH” WOULD EXIST FOR NEARLY 1,000 MORE YEARS.

Actually, Eklesia was first used in Numbers in the Old Testament.

It’s both a why and a when question combined into one.

…when they stop struggling to build an interior life with God…when they listen to “feelings”

Actually it was my desire to grow more spiritually which led me to the Orthodox Church.

I really wish this thread is being responded to by people who actually have left the Catholic Church and not by those who are merely speculating. It is uncharitable to put words into our mouths.

It is uncharitable to put words into our mouths.
That’s really stretching it.

Speculation about why people leave the Catholic Church is no more uncharitable than it is to propose why husbands leave their families, or why some Muslims prefer the burqa over the abaya, or why Jains cover their mouths but not their heads…

it’s just good conversation to speculate and propose, refute and discuss.
