This term is offensive to me because I used to be one. In trying to abbreviate the long word to ssomething shorter by truncating the “amentalist” part and add an “ie” for short I thought it would pass just as easy as “fundamentalist”. But no. I can’t use the shortened term for simplicity sake on a BOARD…that is known for abbreviating many terms. Further, why are others allows to use derogatory terms like “Roman” before Catholic and Papist and Uniate and not be corrected?

I’m confused, is this really a Catholic Forum or is the an attempt to create an even buracracy?😉 I love Fundamentalists, in many ways I still am one and the overwhelming majority of my very large family are fundamentalists. Sorry but I think someone got this one wrong. I don’t get it. People can’t come to a public forum and wear their feelings on the shoulder waiting for someone to knock it off. I was referring to Jack Chick and a well known male chauvenist who we’ve heard preach it live in person, or is that also banned from use too. Tell me how people can get away with shortening any term then… English majors must be furious at the forum moderators for not correcting the grammar on here, especially mine.

most fundamentalists (current) would embrace the term.

roman catholic is a valid term for it is the catholic church based in rome. many consider themselves a part of the catholic (universal) church but they are not in communion with rome. by saying catholic (and meaning only those in communion with the bishop of rome), you would be offending those who do not hold to the same view.

basically, some one, somewhere will be offended by something you say. you could have the best intentions, but things will always be misinterpreted.

The correct way if you wish to indicated some connection to Rome is, The Catholic Church of the Roman Rite. Otherwise it is the Catholic Church.

I’m not quite following this comment with your subject line? Wouldn’t the fact that you can’t use the slang term for Fundamentalist indicate this website does think it might be offensive?

Sorry, gotta be nitpicky there and disagree with that. http://coctocatholic.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif You won’t find “Roman Catholic Church” in any official documents of the Church when referring to the entire thing…it is always Catholic Church, period. The whole Roman thing started as a pejorative slam against Catholics from the Anglicans. I don’t mind it when referring to the Latin rite alone, but I do think it’s incorrect when referring to the whole Catholic Church, despite what some of our Orthodox friends insist upon claiming. Call a Byzantine Rite Catholic “Roman Catholic” and see the strange look he gives you, lol.

JPII is a disrespectful way of referring to one of the greatest popes ever. But many don’t find it offensive. Fundie is a shorter way to write Fundamentalist. I was a fundamentalist up until a year ago. It offended me to here people refer to me as that on some level. Fundie actually tones it down to me. I beleive it’s a personal thing. Someone found something to nickpick and really drove someone crazy to make them not allow it.

If you refer to me as a Roman Catholic I will probably curse at you under my breath and smile at the same time think “knucklehead” don’t you know that was an insult to the Catholic Church from the Anglicans? So yes it does rub me the wrong way sometimes. The other thing I dislike is Uniate or Papist or Romaist or something like that. Bleeding heart also ticks me off. Or “liberal”. Liberal is an insulting term and in modern language used like a curse word.

I find the term “Protestant” quite insulting too when used uncharitably with certain groups. My former faith, but yet still my family, consider Catholics a denomination and they are the one true Church founded by Christ. You insult them when you refer to them as church of Christs or whatever. They use the term “Christian”. nothing more or nothing less. When using some of these references on CAF it is rather difficult to convey a message of charity among Catholics that railroad non-Catholics. Scott Hahn uses the term “bible Christians”. That feels better to me and is more cheritable because it doesn’t offend someone that claims bible only doctrine. “Fundamentalist” and “Fundie” offended me, but to say the “Fundie” is more derogatory than “Fundamentalist” is just rediculous. I guess I have to remap again. Anytime someone like Jack Chick is talked about I he falls under that catagory even among conservative bible Christians.

 I am not sure I understand. You say that the term is offensive to you but then turn around and use it twice to refer to your up bringing and your family?
If you refer to me as a Roman Catholic I will probably curse at you under my breath and smile at the same time think “knucklehead” don’t you know that was an insult to the Catholic Church from the Anglicans?
I on the other hand do not care and do know where the term originated from. You can probably tell from my name. This goes to show you what Bengal was talking about is true, you can’t please everyone. What is offensive to one person may not be to another.

With all respect to Dr. Hahn, who I owe a lot to for where I am in my faith today, It offends me a great deal. By calling them “Bible Christians” you are implying that I am not. I of course would disagree. 😉
“Fundamentalist” and “Fundie” offended me, but to say the “Fundie” is more derogatory than “Fundamentalist” is just rediculous.
I think I get it now. You used the one word and got called on it and think that the second word is just as derogatory. I am sure that the people at CAF have a great reason to not allow the first term to be used on these forums. And these are their forums and we are all guests here and must abide by their rules.

Sorry you have found terms that get used here to be offensive.

God bless you

Being called:

  • Papist
  • Romanist
  • Pape
  • left-footer
  • mackerel-snapper
  • devil-worshipper
  • liberal
  • doesn’t bother me; nor is it clear why “liberal” is a form of insult. AFAICS, what people - in the US ? - mean nowadays is libertinism, which is something entirely different; but that’s only a shot in the dark. ISTM that liberalism probably has a number of overlapping, partly inconsistent meanings, each of which is formed by the historical context it comes from.
If certain Protestants don’t want to be called Fundamentalists, they shouldn’t be connected with publications called “The Fundamentals”. If they don’t want the unpleasant associations that Fundamentalism of the “conservative Evangelical Protestant” type has, they should not act like jerks. The Society of Friends made the nickname “Quakers” a badge of honour by the quality of their lives & Christian witness - there is nothing to stop “conservative” Evangelical Protestants of that kind doing likewise. The remedy is in their own hands.

The worst feature of Fundamentalism is that it is being exported to other countries. 😦 😦 It is US Protestant Fundamentalism that has inflicted Dispensational Premillennialism on the world (unless DPism is the cause of Fund’ism, which is possible)

bahaaaaa baahahaaaaa. baaaahhaaaaaaa.

Are we all dumb sheep? Just follow the leader, don’t say a word. And we wonder why Protestants, non-Catholics, Bible Christians, Fundamentalist, etc. think Catholics can’t think. If we go around constantly worrying about what the other guy thinks all the time we are nothing less that politically correct.

Yes. You figured it out. I was warned for using a term that was not intended to be offensive, but rather a lazy way of shortening up my long posts. The moderator means well I’m sure, but there are quite a few other posts that have more offensive terms and comments that go unchecked.

Uniate, which I reserected from the oldest link I found. But it was significant to our conversion so it made sense to bring it up. The term papist is also quite offensive. The term Roman in Roman Catholic is used like its the official name of the Church when in fact it is not. We are Catholic. Just like the Saturday morning cartoon on EWTN.

Sorry if I’ve confused you. I’ve gotten over it now. And my brain juices are settling. I’ve found that I can barely communicate on this forum and am beginning to believe it is the worst forum I’ve ever been on for communicating ideas. People get offended for some of the dummest reasons. It’s part of the “all or nothing” thinking in some cases. Some people walk around with their sacred calves. It’s how they get their way with everything.

But I was was people refer to as Fundamental Evangelical…that is a way of saying that I proselytized other folks into believing my flavor of Chrisitanity. If took me a life time to get where I am now, but it came with a price. We have sacrifice our families to become Catholic. They will go through the roof once they discover where our journey lead us. My wife is struggling greatly over avoiding her elderly mother who has already referred to Catholics and Muslims as being pagan. I understand. Though my father took me in at a young age and later introduced me to his faith, Catholicism, i was never chatechized properly growing up and saw a lot of things I try not to talk about anymore. I even went to the seminary during a time that reflects poorly upon the Churches leadership in the 70/80’s. Needless to say I ran like crazy trying to protect myself from immorality that seemed to be in every corner of the Church. Later when I planned to return to the seminary with an agenda to be a pain in the bishop’s side by making him face the illicit scandals that he kept hiding, I then met my wife and her family. At one point they were more convincing and actually showed conviction to “save” me. It created lots of doubts, and ultimately I broke down in fear and got baptized [invalid] completely submerged in water. It took Scott Hahn and others to come to grips with reality in the ancient church. It also took realizing problems with “authority” and “tradition” outside the majisterium. Learning has been difficult and when I come here for support all I get is constant flack for not being knowledgeable on the latest offensive term. We used to call the the “the what’s happening now church” mentality.

I’m actually very ecumenical, but I draw lines in the sand because I’ve been on the other side, that is the side this forum constantly attacks. Karl Keating has great intensions, but out of all of the books I’ve read, his is the least I like. I love many other writers much more. I hope to look at one of his newer books. His book confused me so much years ago that it actually had the reverse effect on me and ultimately led to to seriously doubt the Catholic teachings. I really came to believe it was a lie and made up.

But it was CA Jimmy Akin that led me to realize my mistake.

Anyway, whether I was a Fundie, Fundamentalist, Evangelist, Bible Christian or whatever Catholics called me, I am now Cahtolic…I actually would prefer to go to the Byzantine Catholic side though. So Roman tends to be a bit obnoxious to me in some ways. But I can get over it. I was just making a point. But I have Catholic friends that get really insulted when you use the term “Roman”. They are European and reject that term as a derogatory term.

If I say “Roman Catholic” I am doing it to distinguish between that and Orthodox. It is simply easier than saying… “Catholic but not Orthodox or Eastern Catholic and not those other people who are catholic but not in communion with Rome” 🤷

And I consider a “Bible Christian” to be of the Denomination of “Bible Churches” not protestants in general.

I use the term Latin Catholic when specifying my rite. I use Catholic to speak of the universal church in which all Christians subsit. That’s a good question too. Is that correct? That is do all Christians subsist within the Catholic Church? More to think about. How can that be? Getting off of my own topic.

That is do all Christians subsist within the Catholic Church?
Probably depends on who you ask. I have known non-Catholic Christians to say that they are a part of the Catholic Church just not the “Roman” Catholic Church. I have also known non-Catholic Christians who also want nothing to do with the term Catholic at all.

🤷 Depends on the person I guess.

BTW does non-Catholic Christian offend any body 😃 I kid I kid.

God bless

Welcome home panoikei and welcome to the CAF’s. I dont believe anyone here means any disrespect to anothers faith identity church name. I have trouble identifying which denomination I am addressing, so just ask , and hopefully you will get a response to call them by, so as not to offend them. As for you, I will try and remember your call name and not address you by your faith as to not offend you. peace be with you, see around:)

panoeiki i will pray for your continued development in our faith. i have observed that coming away from the fundamentalist side takes a lot of healing time, it will not happen quickly or without some pain. May God bless you on your journey.

I am Catholic, how do you know what I think, unless I tell?

I don’t presume to speak for all those who self-identify as fundamentalist, so do not appreciate others trying to speak for me.

Abridging references to people with whom you disagree generally has a rude and pejorative sound.
Further, why are others allows to use derogatory terms like “Roman” before Catholic and Papist and Uniate and not be corrected?
I won’t comment on Uniate because it’s not my fight. I don’t think people are allowed to say “Papist,” and I rarely see it used. “Roman Catholic” is not widely regarded as a pejorative term in the same way–many Catholics use it about themselves, although some hyper-sensitive Catholics try to ban it (in my opinion as a form of stealth imperialism). Furthermore, it is not an abridgment but a clarification, sometimes to distinguish members of the Roman Communion from others who claim to hold to the historic fullness of the Faith, and sometimes to distinguish members of the Latin Church from Eastern Christians in union with Rome.

It is an attempt to create a healthy space for dialogue. The moderators are to be commended for their success in this.

That would explain your discomfort with the charity and generosity shown by your fellow-Catholics toward those with whom they disagree. Perhaps this is a point on which a “deeper conversion” is needed?

In Christ,

Edwin

I’m sorry, but a learned Byzantine Catholic priest (formerly Roman-Rite in fact) of my acquaintance used the term “Roman Catholic” all the time. I’ll believe him rather than you on proper terminology, thank you very much.

Edwin

Is that correct? That is do all Christians subsist within the Catholic Church? More to think about. How can that be? Getting off of my own topic.
my undersatding is that you are correct in this. Pope Benedict recently wrote about this, Their is only one Church, the Catholic Church, and that all other bodies are actually ecclesial communities rather than churches. someone can correct me if i have mistated this, I did not read the Pope’s teaching in detail, but only extracts of it.

I didn’t know the term fundamentalist, or even fundie, was insulting. I think there are a lot of people out there who just revel in being offended. Roanoker
