yellowbird:
I am one of a small group of “fallen-away” Catholics who post on this forum. I have been literally bludgeoned by hateful posters who have refused to consider even one particle of anything I’ve had to say (with a few notable exceptions, like JReducation, who responds to inquiries with information, not condemnation). Hardly anyone says, “That’s interesting, marietta, but this is what I believe” or “this is what the Church teaches - you might find this applies to your situation.” Upper case fonts, bold and red lettering, character assassination, name-calling, deliberate convolution of my posts - you name it, I’ve been the subject of it.
It’s fine if people do not agree with me, or if their beliefs differ from mine. But I believe without posters like me, this forum would be a back-slapping, glad-handing ice cream social.
From my perspective, this brings out the worst in people, me included. If there is no free exchange of ideas then we are looking at a little theocracy. And if Catholics want to carry a message of compassion, hope and love, wouldn’t it be better to try another approach?
“Stand down or concede what point?” you challenge.
“Like when a non-Catholic says, ‘You guys worship Mary’ - rather than getting frustrated because we’ve already explained that one about 5,386,291 times… we should say, ‘You’re right - you got us… yep, we worship her!’ Is THAT what you’ve been waiting for? If so, you’re gonna be waiting a loooooooooooong time.”
What is it that they say? “Charity starts at home”?
