Why do Catholics pray to Mary and the saints?

Hello, my name is Kate and I have a question that has been bothering me for a while. Why do Catholics pray to Mary and the saints? Wouldn’t it be better to simply pray directly to God? I am a protestant and currently do not know much about the Catholic faith. Thank you for taking the time to answer my question!
