Why do Catholics pray to Mary?

Are there any biblical references of prayer being directed to anyone other than the Heavenly Father? Why does the Catholic Church teach prayers may be offered to Mary, etc?
 
Hi,

We don’t pray to Mary and the saints in the sense of worshiping them, but in the sense of asking them to pray for us–as we ask each other for prayer.
