The Liturgy of the Word is still supposed to be about worship first and education second.
Catholics have grown a strange idea that we only should/need to gather together once a week for an hour as a catholic community. This is NOT true and does not reflect the historic catholic teaching and culture. Towns used to literally be built around their churches. The whole flow of culture revolved around the faith, much of which has been lost or only remains as vestiges (The world Holiday, of course is rooted in Holy Day, for example.)
We need far more than a homily a week to be educated in our faith. Anybody like me who grew up in the era of Kumbaya catechesis really NEEDS to read at least the compendium catechism and a popular summary teaching such as “Catholicism for Dummies” or the Didache series of high school catechetics by Midwest Theological Forum. A routine of Scripture study is helpful too, the Great Adventure Bible Timeline being an excellent place to start.
