Why Do Cats Meow at Humans?

I have read stories of mother ducks doing the same thing, approaching people, to ask for help in rescuing their babies who have fallen down the storm drains.

My cat has me trained with certain mrrps and mews. One is when she’s hungry and one for when she wants to go outside.

Her favorite toy is a little fur mouse. When she wants to play she brings me one (she as several). So then we play fetch for a little while.

All of these mice are all over the house. Daily she will walk around and collect them, one by one, and deposit them next to (and in) her food bowl. We don’t know why.

The other day I gave her some kitty treats on the kitchen floor. She didn’t eat them all, and when I came back into the kitchen she had placed one of those mice next to the treats.

Anybody familiar with that type of behavior? It’s entertaining, but I wonder what it means to the cat. I wouldn’t want to offend… 😮

Is your cat a spayed female?

I noticed spayed females usually display this mothering behavior sometimes using their stuffed toys as substitute kittens.

I also noticed cats tend to hoard things. Some cats hoard rocks, some hoard bottle caps and a coworker of mine had a cat that hoarded kitchen knives of all things.

That’s amazing! I never heard that before, and I never would have guessed it. Thank you, @Sarcelle!

Just wondering what it means when a human meows at a cat???
I only really meowed back at one cat. I’ve never seen a cat give such a “WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY!!!” manner more than in that moment. Of course, that just encouraged me to taunt him more because of how funny it was, but considering he still kept trying to get into my room to sleep, I guess I didn’t offend him too badly.

(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.) When my 4-yo son and I went to the pound to look at our little guy, he was badly beaten up; in fact, two of his wounds were still seeping fluid. He was covered in scabs and missing fur from the fight. He didn’t look cute in his picture and only had a number instead of a name. One person said he was scheduled for euthanasia while one said he was just “not renewed” (typical government bureaucracy: can’t get a straight answer…typical for this area of the US too). He was hiding in the back corner of his cage; I thought he was sleeping.

I reached in to pet him and he turned his head to give me a loud, affirmative MEOW. I had the boy reach in to pet him and he did it again. I had already made up my mind about 98%, so I leaned down and said “would you like to come home with us?” Then, he gave me the loudest MEEEOOWW! yet. The skeptic in me said that animals don’t understand language, but the softy in my adopted him on the spot.

IDK, maybe it was confirmation bias because I DO want to believe that he understood me and he does meow whenever I come home. Then again, maybe the Holy Spirit led him to appear to respond to my question because he has enriched our lives…okay hyperbole alert on the last three words, but you get the idea!

lol! I’ve read that we sound like the adults in Charlie Brown cartoons when we meow to them, and you’re right. It IS fun/cute to meow at them!🤣
