Why do fundamentalists believe the world is 6000-10000 years old?

We have Saber toothed cats (est. between 1.8 myo - 10,000 yo), Trilobites (est. at 450 myo), Keichousaurs ( est. around 210 myo), Ammonites of various ages, which went extinct 65 million years ago (when dinosaurs went extinct), petrified wood, that is between 210 - 240 million years old, fossil fish, such as Knightia, Diplomystus, Priscacara, Phareodus, Heliobatus, Mioplosus, Notogoneus, and others that went extinct about 35 million years ago (or more), when the three lakes of the Wyoming, Colorado and Idaho border area dried up.

These are not occasional anomalies, as someone earlier said. They are regularly found fossil animals. I can take you to the digs and we can chip away for ourselves. I promise you’ll see many complete fossils - not pre-placed by tricksters.

Recently, an almost “complete” T-rex skeleton was discovered in eastern Montana, est. to be 67 - 65 myo. You can purchase it for your home for about $8 million dollars.

So, it is absurd to think that they did not exist. It is absurd to think they did not pre-date modern man. It is absurd to think that they were occasional anomalies.

I agree that dinosaurs lived a long time ago, and that is fine with me, I would not want them using their teeth on me!

The Old Testament reflects the pre-scientific cosmology of the ancient near east. The earth is flat and rests on pillars, the sky is a firmament of beaten bronze, like an inverted bowl. There are waters above the firmament and below the earth. This world view was good enough for the ancient Hebrews who were not speculators about nature as were the ancient Greeks.

This pre-scientific cosmology is not what the biblical authors are teaching, by any means, it is the existing cultural framework in which the divine message is communicated. The inerrancy of the bible pertains to what the sacred writers are teaching, what their message is.

Literalist misunderstand Biblical inerrancy and divine inspiration and so engage in every manner of mental gymnastics to show that the Bible is scientifically accurate. They honestly believe they are defending the Word of God against skeptics, but their efforts are little more than an exercise in futility. It is misguided and based on misunderstandings.
 
Absolutely not a Church teaching or official Church statement but of interest to any Catholic creationist who like I BELIEVES the world is as Catholic martyrology suggests.

In the Scriptures and one finds the following: Adam 5 days, Noah and the flood 1056 years (2941 BC), Abraham 1950, Exodus 2540, birth of Jesus 3997, death of Jesus 4030, fall of Jerusalem 4070, the year 2000AD 5997 and so on

so when exactly was it that the Church realised that it and Scriptures had been and were wrong about the earth being the centre of the Universe.As for vast majority try total Catholic website at www.ScriptureCatholic.com and scroll down l/h column to Science - not that it will make any difference but one hopes and prayers it does - twinc

If this is a genuine revelation, and it is correctly interpreted, why is it only cited by creationists but not the Church hierarchy, the Magisterium, biblical scholars, theologians, Church historians, and so on in support of a particular way of interpreting the bible and history, etc.?

I wonder what answer your neighbor would have if you asked him what he believes about what Jesus said in John 6? No literal interpretation there I’m guessin’? I have noted that some are literal when they should be allegorical and allegorical when they should be literal:shrug: I also am confused about how important dinosaurs are to the salvation message…but that is just me.

Well first of all private revelations are not official Church teachings so cannot be acted upon… (except when Pope John XXIII got one telling him to have a council). But the Church has never said it was not suitable reading or censored it in any way. Indeed quite the opposite, her books are widely read in Catholic circles.

Anyway, since 1741-1833 , the Church hierarchy, (not the Magisterium), biblical scholars, theologians, Church historians, and so on, have been compromised by the greatest ‘scientific’ fraud in history and have to follow the dictates of science rather that show faith in the understanding of the Fathers.

This discussion is not about Vatican II. Church Fathers have been shown several times in this thread to indicate that the Bible and Genesis in particular are not a science book.

I checked a jewish website the current year is 5770. 5771 begins about 9 months from now.
