Why do lutherans call themselves evangelical catholics?

I don’t have any inside knowledge of it, but we have to ask ourselves: Why do people always assume that Rome should make a pronouncement on whether the priests in question have valid orders or not?

I don’t presume. I know the history behind Apostolicae curae, long and complicated.

On this point, I’m just curious.

This makes sense to me en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apostolicae_Curae I think the Norwegians need to petition the Vatican for a ruling on this case. Until then I think it’s wise to assume that their orders are invalid since there case is so similar to the Anglicans. I think that the Vatican would presume to take this up without a request. Maybe since they are ordaining women the Holy See would even deny the request. That’s just my thoughts on the matter though.

Interesting … that sentence might possibly be the last thing I expected I would hear you say. (Well, not counting “You killed my father.”)

I can’t conceive of the Norwegians doing anything like that.

We’ll yes it was my mistake. Perhaps if some members of that Norwegian Church would like to come home they could petition the Holy See to look into the matter.

Lutherans becoming Catholic? I don’t think there’s any “if” about it … all over the world you can find Lutherans becoming Catholic, Catholics becoming Methodist, Methodists becoming Anglican, Anglicans becoming … well, you all get the idea (I hope, or I could be typing all night).:cool:

Now that statement surprised me about you. I guess we don’t understand one another. BTW If it’s all the same to the Balamand committee I’ll try to convert Orthodox to the True Church. The Eastern Rite of the Catholic Church is part of the Catholic Church and do not need to be converted.

I’ve met few Lutherans but my impression is our Lutheran cousins, for they are very close to us, unlike other Protestants, have a point. At one point in the late Middle Ages some of us forgot that it’s all about God’s love and grace above all. We are saved by faith. But we are still the church and it was wrong of them to leave.

I think you must have clicked on the wrong Quote button. Because what you quoted says that there are “Lutherans becoming Catholic, Catholics becoming Methodist, Methodists becoming Anglican” etc (which your post doesn’t contradict).

To petition Rome includes an implication that validity is dependent on Rome’s say so. With due respect, that’s not the way Lutherans typically view the issue. Having Rome’s recognition of our orders would be welcome, but not necessary.
