Why do many Catholics think it's okay to sin?

So I’m in RCIA and getting baptised next year, most Catholics I meet are not religious and think their beliefs are right even though they are against Catholic teachings, such as having sex when you’re not married… how? I know young Catholics that go out and get drunk on weekends and are promiscuous. I even know a teenage Catholic girl who is an unmarried mother.
These Catholics go to church every week and receive Eucharist.

I don’t understand why so many think it’s okay. I’m in Australia, do people in other countries have people like this?

Why do people think it’s okay to do whatever we like? do people even understand what a sin is?

You commented you “even know a teenage Catholic girl who is an unmarried mother”.
It takes a lot of courage to carry a baby to term, when she could have easily had her sin of premarital sex unknown by having an abortion.

As far as the others, well, you mentioned they are against Church teachings, so it sounds like they definitely know right from wrong on that. All you can do is pray for their conversion of heart and be a model to them of what a faithful Catholic and involves.

In the US we have people like this. Where I grew up at least, I tend to think it’s in large part because of poor Catechesis (both at home and at Church), together with a less than ideal culture. I went to my parish’s religious ed through the first few years of high school, and we never got past “God loves you no matter what you do.” Which is great and all, but there’s more too it than that.

Unwed parents may be several steps up from killing ones own children, but still many steps down from where we’re supposed to be, and so far as the general drunken promiscuousness of the culture goes…

I don’t think this is really a Catholic problem though, just a problem with the culture in general that we Catholics have yet to adequately address for our members.

This is a very good question! Goes on here in the United States. Don’t know why people think it is okay. A teenager making a mistake I can understand, and she kept the baby! It is the older folk that act like formication is not a sin that I can’t understand.

In the homilies at your parish in Australia is sin ever addressed? Here, few and far between.

“…many are called, few are chosen” - Bible

“More souls go to hell because of sins of the flesh than for any other reason”
Our Lady of Fatima

How exciting that you’ve found your way into the Church! Congratulations and welcome! We missed you. 😃

I think the world (music, entertainment, tv, advertising, etc) chatechizes people 7 days a week every hour they are awake. They come to church on Sunday, get a 10 min homily that says God loves you, and you can see that a teaspoon can’t push back an ocean.

If we understood that the devil is real and he’s found it very easy to lead us to our own destruction, we would faint from fear.

I went to a different Parish last Sunday and the priest talked about Pornography on the internet and it was aimed at teenage boys.
This was a more traditional Parish though, I noticed because a few women were wearing veils and was different to my usual Parish. I liked it though.

Thank you, I’m so happy I’m becoming Catholic!

As a young Catholic, I’ll pray for others and maybe I can be an example to others.

Welcome! The problems you site are universal, when I was a protestant, we had the same
problems. Jesus talked about the problem in the parable of the wheat and the teres.

“By my works I will show you my faith”, says St. James. And the Lord did warn us that not all who called Him Lord would enter the Kingdom, but only those who did the Father’s will, the pure of heart, the true devout, those who became like children in the faith, growing only in wisdom.

Does this scare you? It shouldn’t. It is well-known that the Church, the mystical Bride, will follow her divine Spouse in the way of the Cross all the way up. Trouble will come. In fact, Christ sadly spoke these words:
When the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?
The issue with Catholics is critical, because it is specifically to us that Christ said:
You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless.
However remember that the Sacred Tradition is not altered by the fact that people don’t follow it: Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. And that’s truly what matters: that we know how to imitate Him and that we make our choice daily, even every hour: towards Him or away from Him. And we make that choice deep within our heart. And He alone knows it, He knows them all.

Just a word of advice: never again will you experience what you experience now. This is the time of passion. Later on comes the time of peace, and you will wonder why you don’t feel the same thing in prayer and devotion as you did at the beginning. This is because ultimately we are falling in love with God. We are learning to love our Mother, also, the Church, which is the mystical Bride of Christ. Remain in God’s love, and always love Him more. And if you think you can’t love Him more, ask Him to let you do so. Then even after many years, even after many trials and burdens, even when the cross is heaviest, that is, at the very end of the way, you will still be able to exchange a look with your Divine Spouse, and that one look shall suffice.
