Why do married men go to prostitutes?

Hi, I wasn’t singling you out at all, Huiou Theou. I have personally witnessed how porn and especially Internet porn chat rooms can change the way a person thinks. My ex husband has become completely disordered by it. By the end of our marriage, he didn’t want my loving attention, but preferred the women he had chatted up. He completely rejected me, no matter how hard I tried. I am not unattractive either, so it wasn’t my personal appearance that turned him off.

There are almost as many women influenced by porn as men, so it isn’t just a man’s issue, especially with todays younger generation, many of whom have grown up with porn and think it’s normal to view it.
Thanks, I appreciate it. Sometimes these threads become Alice in wonderland with all the subtle remarks going on… and I have had people broadside me before – too many thoughts to track and I become self conscious. 🙂

That’s extremely odd. I have known people who got into porn, unfortunately, but I have never noted that particular effect.
They were always more intensely body part oriented, and less person oriented – as if you could remove the eyes of the beloved and ignore her except for the medicinal sexual organs or something – I never understood it fully.

Was this something different than the porn that was on the internet some 15 years ago somehow?

so, the first question, is why sleep on the couch – he doesn’t chase you sexually anyway right? He doesn’t hurt you, and the only actualization of humiliation at this time is anonymous.

To be honest, you are safer in the bed than on the couch.
Well, my priest was pretty adamant I continue to sleep on the couch. His reasons for saying so were probably out of protection for me though. Initially I slept on the couch because I was disgusted with him, and about ready to pack his bags. Things have calmed down for me a bit more now, although I’m real mad and I’m trying real real hard to not show it, doing fairly well at that I think.

How do you mean “safer”? I mean he may actually want to have sex just to make himself feel better. He could be sick enough that it might possibly get him high to endanger me. I don’t know. I didn’t expect he’d ever follow through with a prostitute, but here we are. He’s being so nice right now and has all week, even with me sleeping on the couch. He’s wanting to plan a getaway together, and I think it’s to ease his conscience. This is all very confusing.
The only things left are combinations of of adrenaline and release – fear and anger. Prostitutes have no control over him – but apparently, you do, he has a need to feel in control, powerful, dominant or something – and at the same time he hides it from you.
One big problem we have is I’m let’s say better verbally endowed than he is. I love words. I actually have to dumb down my speech sometimes because I know his vocabulary isn’t all that wide. And before anyone thinks it, I never try to belittle him in this regard, although sometimes I’ll bet I’m certainly interpreted that way when I use a word he doesn’t understand, and end up asking him if he knows what it means. But when that sort of circumstance occurs, I don’t ever rub his nose in the fact that he didn’t know whatever a particular word means, I just tell him what it means, and yes I’m conscious of not trying to appear superior, although I’ll bet he thinks that I think I am. Honestly I am very conscious of this and I try to be as considerate of his feelings in this regard as I can be. Even when I’m mad. I do not hit below the belt, and the only times I’ve ever called him stupid were in relation to him being insensitive, never in the regard of lack of knowledge, never. His dad called him stupid just about every day, and will still on occasion call him stupid in a joking manner. I learned very early on that the word stupid is a hot button word for him, he completely shuts down. I couldn’t imagine having a parent who called me stupid all the time.

He wants me to admire his speaking ability, I know he wants that. But he doesn’t work on it, and as it is, well I can’t lie and say he impresses me with his speech. He’s real knowledgeable on a lot of things, and I do compliment him on the things he knows real well. But he has literally backed out of the room while I’m speaking on many occasions because he wants to get out of the conversation. I really can’t win with him in this regard, he wants me to talk with him, and then when we do, he wants me to shut up. He wants me to argue politics and faith with him, but if I’m better informed or better able to communicate my position than he is, then he wants me to shut up. He never says shut up, not unless he’s really really angry. But when a person is backing away from you while you’re speaking to them and just nodding their head and saying, “uh huh… uh huh…” until they get half a chance to turn their back and walk away, well I may be thick sometimes, but I’m not totally stupid, I can figure out that means “shut up.”
Perhaps he is unable to please you with his sexual activities?
Do you want more than he can give?
More often would be nice, and I’d like to have him come to me more often than me go to him. It would sure be nice to feel wanted and even needed in that specific way. The way it feels now and has for years is dutiful, and not dutiful in the sense that most would think, because he’s not asking for it. I go to him because I know it needs to be done. If I waited on him, I’d end up moody and irritated, and then there’d be even less of a chance of doing it.
Unhappy married men go to prostitutes by far the most often.

I’m sure of this – he isn’t the kind of man who thinks sexuality is “dirty” in any meaningful sense of the word.
I’m sure he’s unhappy. But we would have a much better time of healing our shared unhappiness if he could be honest and talk to me, tell me when I screw up at least, and not blame all our problems on the fact that I’m going to church every Sunday.

I scheduled an appt. with the therapist for Monday. It’s kind of inconvenient because I have a paper and a presentation due that day, but I’ll have to figure out how to divide my attention and do both. I just don’t feel this is healthy at all for me to be pushing all this down inside, and only address it for short periods when I have an opportunity. I really would like to explode, and not to a girlfriend or a family member, I’d like to explode all over him. This is unfair. I feel like I’m protecting him. I am protecting him. But he’s hurt me. So it feels just rotten that I am the one who has to protect him.

At someone’s suggestion I’ve done some research on sex addiction. I’m not trained in psychology (in fact, I think I dropped it and took sociology instead), but the description seems to fit him. I’m hoping to mention this to the therapist on Monday, get his advice on the sleeping arrangements, as well as his opinion on this getaway my husband wants to plan with me.

You really impress me. I think you are cool and strong and I back you totally on all the things you have said… also the posts to ghostman where you seemed hesitant as if you should be a sweet, little girl although you are the one being skrewed and has every right to be angry.

One thing I still really dont get is … howcome you are still silent??? you say you are protecting your husband… I don’t get that… whats that all about?
You NEED to take this confrontation. You cant just go about in silence and sleep on the couch with him not knowing that YOU KNOW. He is planning a get-away? … Look… sigh… you gotta confront him. I cannot say how terribly I think he is treating you. But the sooner you stand up for your self the sooner you are also standing up for your marriage, your child and even your husband.
Its clear that you love this man very much… and I have been there: I too have tried being in love with a man that somehow abused me and could not control his temper and was utterly unreasonable sometimes where my friends were urging me to get away from him… But I loved him and I also sat back and took everything in silence because the situation was somewhat surreal to me and I was afraid of what saying “no” would bring…

But dear sister in Jesus, you have to show your husband the evidence and show him your grief. It does not have to be a loud thing … just show him how he hurts you. Tell him to sit down and let you talk and then tell him all the things… after that things will be out in the open and that will be a relief.

As I said: you are a hero in my eyes… and I think that also the way you deal with people’s accusations here is awesome… you keep your peace. Whereas you need support you are being but on the defence… that is not fair. But you are cool… 👍
dont let people get to you…

Oh yes… and stay on the couch! :hug1:

I’m fairly certain my husband has been with a prostitute or two by now. I’m trying to get him into counseling, but not sure how much good it will do since he seems unwilling to be truthful. It’s a terrible situation.

I wondering though, why has he done this? At the same time, he’s being “better” towards me, gave me a passionate kiss before bed tonight, which he doesn’t usually do, and I’m fairly certain now (after finding some evidence) he saw a prostitute on Sunday.

I know no one but my husband can tell me exactly why he went to see a prostitute, but I wonder if anyone has any opinion on the subject, or even any resources to help me both cope with this and confront him effectively. I have to confront him, I just don’t know how, or when. I’d like to have a bag packed for him tomorrow when he comes home and show him the evidence I’ve found. I just don’t want to share a home with him while he’s behaving this way. I’d sure like to know why he’s done this. There must be a root cause.
Well sit down and talk first.First make this a rule, whatever is said the only reaction is to be thank you. Here goes.Jim I dont like it when I cant trust you.Jim says Thak you.Now its Jims turn.Remember we have no control over a perso all we have is control over our reaction.if you love jesus pray 4 Jim

I am very thankful for your compliments, it’s very nice to feel supported, and I’ve received a good deal of support here. To answer your question though, well, that’s why I’m here. I think I started this thread the night I found the hard evidence, I wasn’t able to sleep, and knew I had to tell him to go. I was firm in my resolve to tell him to go. I posted this thread for two reasons, one because I am really confused as to why a married fella would make such a choice (and I’ve had a lot of (name removed by moderator)ut here on that), but the second reason is that I guess in a way you need to know what you’re fighting before you go into battle. The confrontation will be a beginning, not an end. The next day after starting this thread I basically did not have the emotional strength to follow thru with a confrontation, I hadn’t had a lot of sleep, and I needed to have all my emotional and intellectual faculties in the best running order, so I put it on hold. Besides, I still didn’t know what to say or how to say it, and I still don’t.

My therapist advised me against an ultimatum the Friday before I found the hard evidence. My priest has advised me against a confrontation with any evidence I’ve found while spying. I have an appt on Monday again with the therapist and will show him the evidence I’ve found, and we’ll see what he says. I know for certain that both my priest and my therapist have seen this sort of situation a whole lot more than I have. I want and need to confront him, but I have to somehow find the strength to not do that just yet. For how long, I just don’t know. I do feel like I’m on the verge of cracking up completely. I better get this figured out soon. I thought that in getting an answer to why he would do this, it might help me combat it and confront it, but the answers to why have left me just as frustrated as I was before I asked the question.

Hm… sometimes I actually think people should act before they get a chance to think too much… One of those times is when I experience something totally unfair or read or hear something which is so disturbing… Then I react instantly or otherwise I get afraid… get worried… get lazy… whatever… and the problem remains. As I said in the beginning I think you should have ordered him right at the fist moment, to pack his things and go to a hotel because YOU need space and you cant stand to be around him right now. That would give him a sense of the seriousness of the situation, give you time and space to think, and at the same time it would leave the situation somewhat open… he would be at the hotel, not looking for a new place to live…

I find it always quite suspicious when some poeple have to have their priests or counsellors tell them every step how to go and what to do… Cousellors are also just people. As for the last advice… the one from your priest, I find it utterly unreasonable. I dont think, that when you present the evidence to your husband, that he is going to start by saying:" what were you doing going through my stuff?" He’d better be more present and clear headed than that…

I pray that you get strength to make a firm stand for the sake of own safety and your child. I dont say that you should kick out your husband and file for divorce (as I dont know him) but I think that what he really needs is to see a strong response from you now, saying you will not tolerate his behaviour and that he is on the way of ruining his own life big time if he does not stop.

I pray for you. Jesus is with you.
Grace

I thought I felt the hair on the back of my head prickle. How flattering to be mentioned - of course, being thought of in a post synonmous with a pig-of-a-man made me wonder. 🙂

The funny thing is, in general I believe that men are pigs. We’re susectable to the basest sins, often care for nothing other than our own satisfaction and are capable of horrible deeds. That being said, I don’t think we’re as bad as many of you ladies make us out to be.

I think men have more of an animal inside them that they need to battle than women do. You ladies have other issues - including dissatisfaction with your husbands thanks to Hollywood - but we men are stuck with the same old sins that have plagued man since the dawn of time.

I’ve enjoyed the refreshing honesty that some of the man have had the courage to post. I’ve also cringed at the closed-minded bashing they’ve taken for doing so. It seems to me that ladies often want us to talk and express our feelings and are then disgusted by what they hear. You can’t have it both ways. We’re scratching, drinking, farting, hard-playing louts who can be tamed by the love of a godo woman. Sometimes.

We’re not the goodie-twoshoes proclaimed by the Hallmark channel or on some of that “Christian Romance” smut peddled in fine “Christian” bookstore. We are tempted; sometimes we fight through it, sometimes we fail. We sin. We smell; we are loud, obnixous, hard-headed, stubborn, ungrateful, unfeeling and without redeeming merit - but some of you stick with us enough to bring out what we can be.

Now, to the question. I think there are two types of men: those who will frequent prostitutes and those who are sorely tempted. There is a third type, those who are not tempted, but this thread is not about them.

There are some men who will want to take a fling as often as they can for the cheapest price they can get. Sometimes this is money, other times dinner, or fancy words, or even marriage. The point is, what ever the shortest path to hanky-panky is, the better. These men, for lack of a better word, are not able to contain the animal within them. They are depraved and - often - don’t care. These men are not worth your consideration.

The second type, the ones who are tempted, are - probably - decent guys who are driven by more of their base desires than they wish, but who don’t act on their impulses. Like any sin, however, the more they dwell on it, the more likely they are to fall. You can’t stay sober if you’re an alcholic at a bar. You can’t stay pure if you’re tempted by a prostitute and have the money and ability to get away with it either - if the impulse is too strong.

The second type of man is strongly influenced by his wife - if he’s married. If she respects him, admires him, shows affection and desire, he will probably never get off that level 1 or 2 temptation. If he’s ignored, disrespected, belittles, mocked, heckled, mommied and told to roll over and forget about it, he’ll have a harder time.

You don’t know what goes on in his head. You can’t. You can help him, just like he must help you overcome your (hypothetical) falling sins. Do you gossip? Get jealous of your friends new house, baby, husband? Disrespect your parents? Hate your neighbor? Read female-porn (or watch those soaps?) Have you ever withheld affection to punish your husband? Have you no besetting sins? If so, do you not know that your husband’s treatment of you can influence them?

It’s so easy to beat up on men for sexual temptation. The fall is long and hard if one of us fails. There is no excuse for failing, but there is also no excuse for a life-partner - especially one interested in the other’s after-life - to make things more difficult by their own selfish behavior.

Some of you ladies are so scandalized by the words other men have spoken that you would probably not be able to help your husband if he were tempted. Is that what you want? Are you so judgemental about temptation - not the act, just the temptation - that you would reject him? That is not what we are called to do.

You may not like this, but you have so much power - for good or bad - over us. A man’s ego is a fragile thing. You want to be loved? Then, love the man you have. You want to be treasured? Then, respect the man you have. You want to be considered a jewel? Then, respect that your husband is a man who can be tempted and let him know that you are proud of the man he is.

The animal is unredeemable - save God’s grace - but the tempted man can be saved. Are you going to be judgemental or supportive?
:clapping: :clapping: :clapping: 👍 i could not have said it any better… and i’m a WOMAN!

If she shows him the stuff she’s found, he WILL turn the whole confrontation into her going through his stuff. that is why the priest told her NOT to show him the stuff she found. if she wants to make the marriage work, she can’t show stuff that was found by being deceitful in the way she found it. If she wants him to trust her, than she has to prove her trust to him. By showing stuff she found, in a not trusting way, blows him ever trusting her enough to tell her the TRUTH about anything now or in the future.

Trust your priest, Trust your counsellor, and Trust yourself on this one.
Praying for ya and him too!

Interesting point. I guess we just have to agree to disagree on this. I don’t think there should be places in the house of married people where there is a “no trespassing” sign…
Besides… it sounds like the OP has had good reason to want to go through her husbands stuff… in order to protect her self in the way that she is now doing I may add… if she had not found the evidence then the situation might be pretty nasty if you know what I mean…
Hypothetically … If my husband found me cheating on him with another man and he held a bunch of my private mails (love letters) in his hand after having had reason to suspected my cheating… I certainly would not say: “YOU were being deceitful”… I’d rather know that he was right in going through my things and then I’d try to find a pretty good excuse for those actual loveletters in his hand.

This is not about the husband of the OP trusting the OP… its the other way around, okay? And trust has been violated here to the point where the OP is like a mom going through the stuff of her criminal son…

That is my view. I dont move one inch on it.
🤷

I do agree… BUT he is NOT our dh is he? nor is he a woman…
therefore what WE would do is maybe not such a good thing for HER to do with him. she knows him better than we do. she also knows what will work with him and what won’t work.
therefore, since the priests and counsellors have gone to school for this sort of stuff, she SHOULD listen to them.

also, they really don’t view marriage the same i’m sure as you or i do. first off they lived together for years. he’s not catholic, for that matter any religion. she’s VERY catholic. they don’t share a bank account. right there is a trust issue. there is probably more trust issues and by her showing stuff she ‘found’ is not a good thing IF she wants him to trust her.

the OP is like a mom going through the stuff of her criminal son…
RIGHT, and what man wants to be married to their mom? Remember, you are not him… you have to get into HIS mind, HIS thinking, and HIS PAST LIFE EXPERIENCES… she KNOWS these things, and so do the counsellor and the priest

I have always been the type of person who gives people the benefit of the doubt…and trying to understand why people do what they will. If my husband was seeing prostitutes, etc…I think it would be hard, but I would definitely try to understand why he was doing this–and of course a myriad of emotional highs and lows would go through my mind. I think on the one hand, I’d want to kick him out, on the other, I love him, and would want to see why he was doing this. But…if my husband refused to change his ways…for the dignity of myself, which is something God wants us to also uphold, and for the dignity of my kids…I would ask him to leave. It’s in the falling and getting back up, and trying to repent, that God will cause us to become more the person He has designed us to be…but, if my husband refused to acknowledge that he had a problem, and only wanted to blame me, I would not stay in such a marriage. Just my thoughts. I would try to work on things–but only if my husband would be willing to work on things, also. Marriages are built with two people, not one.

saint who STAYED IN bad marriage? St Monica
maybe she is being called to this same life for the conversion of her husband, and his family? i wonder how many times St. Monica wanted to end her marriage… maybe even by killing him? I know I would have wanted too! But she stayed, she died to self, she offered up her life. What a cross to carry! we all have different cross’ we are called to carry, and just maybe this is hers too?

that’s a very enligthening perspective.🙂 I didn’t know this about St Monica!:o

whatevergirl.

I second that 👍
Faced with the same challenges, not sure I would ever be a saint, then!😊 But, we carry different crosses that is for sure. I have had my fair share…In some strange ways, I thank God for the crosses, for without them, I might not have grown as close to God as I have–and I wouldn’t be who I am. I do think though, it would be hard to stay in a marriage, where my spouse refused to be faithful. One thing to forgive someone who is willing to change…we all stumble. I haven’t read through all the recent posts–are we talking about staying with someone who continues to see prostitutes? Or staying with someone who ‘saw’ prostitutes, and is willing to change and work on the marriage? **

no, God does not expect us to endanger ourselves. that is why the priest told her to stay on the couch.
I’ve also gone through some pretty tough stuff and have gotten closer to God in the process. My dh also because of me staying, praying, and loving him (tough one at the time) all while the world told me to get out, had a conversion! He did a complete turnaround, even his family says he’s not the same person. He died, Christ came in to live. Maybe her dh will have the same thing happen? Who are we to tell her to leave? Her conscience will lead her. She believes in the Holy Spirit leading her priest. How many of us always believe such a thing?
St Monica stayed when the world, including priests didn’t want to be around it anymore. Mother Theresa stayed even with a darkness of the soul surrounding her. How many other saints have stayed in situations the world tells them to get out of?

Ok here it is, i am sorry but im going to put the cards on the table. And you should too. I have a 24 year old daughter. This is what i would tell her in plain english tell that sick sob to get some help. Get away from him for now and dont blame yourself. You made the choice to quit getting stoned which is great, you grew up you put your child ahead of yourself, now he better do it too. If not hit the road, you are better off alone im sorry. You can get an annulment through the church, and rightly deserve it, There are good guys out there. Trust me . . ITs time to quit letting this go on. Get help or get out. thats what you must do. Please dont put up with this no one should male or female as far as that goes. There IS NO excuse for this.
