Why do married men go to prostitutes?

Hmmm… many of the persons offering support to the woman don’t consider abortion to be anything wrong. However. very few persons would say that adultery is morally okay.

I guess it has to do with the religious views of the society/culture. I think you are saying both are wrong, however in the US most do not agree so. But surely you are not saying that since abortion is allowed, that adultery should be too, are you?
I am not saying that either is right. They are both wrong. However, we look at those who kill their children and say what can we do to help them so they are less inclined to do so and how can we help them get past it. But when it comes to men and adultry their is nothing but bitter hatred. When a man even thinks about adultry you see bitter hatred towards him instead of people asking what can we do to make them less inclined to do so. Please read the proceding posts and you may undersand why I perceive bitter hatred. If you go to similar post about women and abortion you will see a completely different tone. Although some will speak out against the act, very few will speak out against the women and those who do are quickly pounced on.

I think the problem with what we’re seeing with some of your replies, is that there is this underlying implication that ‘any woman’ will do, when a man is not happy at home. I think you’d be surprised at how many men AND women cheat on spouses who were good to them. That’s why affairs, and the like are usually brought about by people who lack something within themselves. That being said, I can totally see a woman whose husband is never around let’s say, feeling neglected and seeking male companionship. I can see that happening for a man, as well. (just using an example not saying I condone it)*

I never meant to imply “any woman will do”. Nor do I mean to imply that the the extramarital affair would solve or satisfy anything. I do believe that when people have a need and they do not feel it is being satisfied in a prefered manner they will look for alternates. Like wise I do not condone it, I just think it is factor that needs to be understood.
whatevergirl;5384262:
But, you would be very surprised to know that many men who cheat, have wives who are good to them. They are seeking something that a marriage can’t fulfill, see. They don’t have a good connection with God, and thus they morally don’t see anything wrong with cheating, if it makes them ‘feel better’, so be it. MANY people who cheat, cheat on loving and caring spouses. Cheaters also have an unhealthy view of relationships and marriage–not wanting to sacrifice for the other.
Is it also possible that a spouse feels they are being a good and caring spouse (and third parties may agree) but that spouse is not providing what is needed by the other. Back to my recomendation about continuing education and counseling even for those who don’t think they need it.
Truly faithful and happily married men don’t turn their heads for a Denny’s waitress. :o They also don’t return flirtations. I saw a girl today downstairs in this cafe I go to, and she was flirting with one of the customers. He had a wedding ring on (he was standing in front of me on line) and paid her no attention whatsoever. He signed his credit card slip, and moved down the line. Who knows how happy in his marriage he is, but he is clearly married.
But unhappily married men…
I don’t disagree with what you’re saying in some parts of this thread, but if you really look at people in your own circle of friends or family, who have cheated…look at their spouses. They probably were not the cause.
I only know of one family member who ever cheated and trust me the spouse drove him off. He had an affair after he left her. I don’t know of any other people who have cheated, and yes I probably lead a very sheltered life.
Men who go to prostitutes, while they could be looking for ‘comfort’ as you say, they are looking for a facade. Marriage isn’t a facade…it’s in your face, real life. It’s the good and the bad. Men who think that marriage should be a constant fantasy trip, shouldn’t get married. :o
I don’t disagree that it is a facade but I presume the culprits learn that after the fact. Once again the continual reeducation would proably help here.

I’m fairly certain my husband has been with a prostitute or two by now. I’m trying to get him into counseling, but not sure how much good it will do since he seems unwilling to be truthful. It’s a terrible situation.

I wondering though, why has he done this? At the same time, he’s being “better” towards me, gave me a passionate kiss before bed tonight, which he doesn’t usually do, and I’m fairly certain now (after finding some evidence) he saw a prostitute on Sunday.

I know no one but my husband can tell me exactly why he went to see a prostitute, but I wonder if anyone has any opinion on the subject, or even any resources to help me both cope with this and confront him effectively. I have to confront him, I just don’t know how, or when. I’d like to have a bag packed for him tomorrow when he comes home and show him the evidence I’ve found. I just don’t want to share a home with him while he’s behaving this way. I’d sure like to know why he’s done this. There must be a root cause.

We’ve been sweethearts for 15 years, lived together for 10 years, and have been married for 4 years. I found him looking at porn about six months after we started living together. I was not practicing the faith at the time, I came back to the church 3 years ago after we discussed having a baby. He is terribly hurt by my involvement in the church, that’s a huge part of our problem. I don’t try to convert him, because it would cause trouble, but he can’t seem to just let me practice the faith. He feels abandoned in a way. We really need to talk about this with a disinterested third party. He has serious trust issues and an extremely problematic childhood experience. Since the baby was born in 2006, and I was laid off from my job making him the sole source of income, his behavior has seriously deteriorated. He uses marijuana habitually, and drinks too much too often as well. I was his smoking buddy for many years, but I left all that behind in 2005 when we decided to have a baby. I hoped he would straighten up like I did for the sake of family and our family’s future, but it actually got worse. He’s making more money now than he ever has in his life, he’s more than capable of providing. I can’t understand the choices he’s making. I didn’t think he was this disturbed, that he would jeopardize his child’s future in this way. He loves his son dearly, none of this makes sense.

There’s been a whole lot of changes between us in the last three years, but nothing so problematic that could possibly justify his behavior. Why does he choose to go off to a prostitute and continually escape his personal problems, and problems in our relationship, rather than just fix them and live truthfully? So that’s why I’m asking the question here, why would a married man choose to go to a prostitute rather than work things out with a woman who’s more than willing?
Dear I am so sorry for your pain, you are in my prayers… I have seen this through one of my friends…We were all party animals when we were in our teens, they hit it off really well and kept on partying…While I was getting married and having kids, they were druggin up and everything else. They would get involved in orgies and all that stuff… They would call me old fashioned etc…Well she decided to come back to the church when she got pg several years down the road… And he kept on with his games and his fantasies… She started asking him to stop doing things like that and concentrate on her and their child…He didn’t listen…Eventually he started sleeping on the couch and she would sleep in their bed with their child…Then he got caught many times with women around where they lived, it was horrible. Their child was getting older, going on around 4 years old and asking mommy why daddy has 2 mommies for him? It was very devastating for her. She ended up leaving him before their child was 6 years old…He felt so abandoned by her and would call her and blame her for all his mishaps and misery. She would take it all to heart, and feel as if it was really her fault…I would try to remind her it was him whom didn’t change…She would say things like “maybe if I would have just kept going with him until he grew up and wanted the responsibilities maybe we’d still be together and inlove…” It was really sad seeing her breaking down even when she wasn’t with him any longer. He would always bring his lovers to see his son, she would break down and cry. One day her ex found out she started dating again and he followed her and stalked her, he found out where she lived, and broke into her house…and waited until she returned home. Her man walked in first, because her ex broke down the door, and her ex just jumped at him and stabbed him repeatedly over and over and over infront of their son, until her bf passed away. She banged his head with a pot to make him stop and the cops arrested him. He was sent to jail for life. Her son is still going to counseling he’s 9 now…

It was terrible…And she couldn’t get over it…She’s now engaged and with a second child from her fiance. She’s started her life over and is doing well…

If your husband is not willing to make it work, then you need to just be honest with him and let him know that if he doesn’t work things out you will let him go, but that you are willing to try to make things work so for him to give you a chance…GOD willing he will. I will pray for you! God bless.

But right now you need to take care of yourself and your child, and you need to find someone to help you, speak with your priest more, he can advice you better…Good luck dear!

I’m a woman, so I don’t know how much my ‘male’ viewpoint will help.

However, I’ve read/skimmed through all the pages and never once did I see something that I think is very important for all of us to realize. The man in question is not a Christian/Catholic man. The rules are very different for non-Christians/Catholics - male & female. That’s key. **I know this because my husband is non-Christian/Catholic and he’s very honest with me. So my perspective comes from him. ** So please don’t slaughter me like some of the guy’s statements have been slaughtered. I’m going to put my comments in double stars ** to separate them.

A man will visit a prostitute/commit adultery sometimes simply b/c relations with his wife are taken for granted. In other words, he wants a new sensation. It really doesn’t necessarily reflect on the man’s wife. She may be providing him w/ everything he needs, but he just wants a new experience. My thought is that this is the expression of a lack in the guy’s mental/emotional/spiritual make-up, but I’m a cradle Catholic who’d never even think of getting relations outside of my marriage.

A man may visit a prostitute/commit adultery to appear more ‘manly’ to other guys w/ the same mentality (immature and selfish). Say one friend is having a bachelor party w/ strippers & prostitutes. The married guy can’t ‘save face’ if he refuses to join in the fun - so he does it - he may or may not enjoy it. This is again a lack of something in the man, not a reflection on the wife.

A man may visit a prostitute/commit adultery because he doesn’t think his wife gives him enough attention, respect, time, etc (either in the bedroom or otherwise). He wants to get his wife’s (or another woman’s) attention b/c he ‘needs’ it to feel like a complete man. This can actually be both a lack in him & a lack in the wife. Its not an excuse, but a woman that continually belittles her husband is not helping him be a better man.

**According to my husband (Thank God) he would never visit a prostitute, but ** 😦 he does think about sex with other women sometimes. However, his reasoning for not visiting a prostitute is not all that great. He said “I’d be afraid I wouldn’t get my money’s worth.” Not exactly what a woman wants to hear from her husband… However, my prayers are constant for him. Men, in general, think very differently from women (not an excuse, just fact). Men, in general, view sex differently from women (not an excuse, just fact). Non-Christian/Catholic men, in general, think and view sex differently and/or with less restraint than Christian/Catholic men (not an excuse, just fact).

I asked my Catholic bf if he would ever visit a prostitute, he told me “There’s no way in this world or any other I would pay for sex, what do I look like stupid?! Secondly I don’t want to have sex just to have sex, there has to be love involved and the whole unity process, I would enjoy the same sex with my wife over and over because I love her and it will always be for love making not just sex…Another thing, I want to have kids with my wife, how in the world am I going to touch another woman and then expect to make love to my wife and have children with her knowing I touched another woman with something that is meant to be for us both only? Doesn’t make sense…Besides that’s just gross, can catch a bunch of **** where you can have the same fun at home, I mean what I could go get freaky outfits and toys and still have a ball! It’s all going to finish the same way except I get to wake up next to my wife and cuddle with her the next day and maybe even get some breakfast out of it, LOL…and without paying a lot of cash! I will just give you some new outfits and you will be happy!! LOL Just kidding babe!”

I laughed too it was kind of funny!!! But at least he was honest about it…And made some good points…

I asked him if he ever had such thoughts or feelings that he needed to tell me…And we could work them out together…He promised once we were married and if he ever had such feelings we would discuss them and try to work them out…

Thank you! Thank you very much. I also believe that they have problems viewing sex in healthy ways. I don’t believe for a moment that men who cheat on their wives with prostitutes are doing so out of mere selfishness…that plays a role, but they obviously think low of themselves if they are willing to pay for sex, and view women as objects to ‘be purchased.’ Thanks for your refreshing post, from a male point of view. :o
There’s zero that’s healthy or right about a man’s engaging in such behavior, and no excuse for it either. Nonetheless, men are odder ducks than some women think, and I can imagine a variety of reasons why different men might do it.

Some are probably precisely interested in sex, and no more–maybe they think their ordinary sex lives are sparse or … ummm … uncolourful. Some are interested in shedding the binding ties that come with sex, and are essentially paying their partner “to go away afterwards,” as the old saw has it. Some may indeed be trying to feel young again. Some politicians and magnates might need to feel like the potentates in the bedroom that they are in the office. Some, interestingly, might be in it more for the affection, or for the paid show thereof: a woman who’ll pretend to find him likable and his company welcome.

I’ve known a few fellows whose wives would consent to have sex with them, but one gathered they hadn’t been smiled at or affectionately touched on the shoulder since before the wedding day. I’m not blaming the wife here, because there could be excellent reasons for that which lead right back to the husband. Still, I can believe that some prostitutes’ customers might be half-willing to skip the sex part just to simulate the sensations of being cherished for a night. That they’re doing this by thoroughly using some poor girl and betraying their families probably can’t totally elude them, though they might try to shove that part to the back of their minds, with varying degrees of success.

Anyway, it’s an strange spectrum of men out there, and the weirdest things can motivate some of them them to do the most disgraceful stuff. God have mercy on them, but most of all on their families.

*I don’t disagree with this. We are all sinners, in need of continual confession and renewing of our vows to growing in holiness. So, I view this as a sin, and like any sin, there are reasons behind what motivates any of us to sin in the ways we do. But, once we figure those reasons out, we have to try to change. I think that while I can see the reasons behind any sexual sin, it’s best to view it for what it is, which is sin…and try to get right with God. Only then can we get past our sins for good–if we get right with God. *

This isn’t specifically addressing the prostitute issue, but it does give some statistics on why men cheat… from WebMD Men’s Health. Its also a very secular view as it doesn’t address the implications morally.

Isn’t It obvious?
Theres more to sex than the regular old “missionary” routine . Men get tired of it, and see their wives as boring. Unless if they are with somebody who knows what they are doing, than thats what they want. I can understand it from there perspective, but its still wrong. People like this need to be prayed for. Its not there fault their partners are inexperienced. But thats okay. Being inexperienced can usually mean pure innocense inside, which is very good. Still, there are tapes and books where people can learn different positions, and differnet techniques on sex. Othere things, like fantasizing can spice up the relationship in a marraige. And in the case where the women were good, but just past their prime, and don’t feel like doing it anymore; as older men, we got to show our wives that they still got it, because usually, thats when the sex gets boring. A women hits menopause, and she doesn’t want to do it any more. As men, we also need to know what we are doing in bed as well. That can bring your older wife running back. Also, women too, can get bored. This can make a man insecure and run to a different woman to feel wanted. And she doesn’t have to be a prostitute. Thats why different sexual techniques, positions, and prayer are crucial in bringing back fire in our marraigies. It really doesn’t hurt to pray. In fact that should be done first, then you can take care of the physical needs afterwards.

Fantasies are also very good too. As long as there isn’t anything fantasized that is immoral like two or three more women, and its being done with you partner, i don’t see why it shouldn’t be done. I’m also not saying we should picture angelina jolie or Jennifer Anniston, or in my case, Kim Kardashain and Bria Myles (I luv curvy women).
We should dress up, do role play, and then have intercourse. That can make things more exciting. The man can feel as though he is in a different situation with his women, and that can be a major turn on for a man.
I don’t believe that God is angry at us when we fantasize. As long as we are thinking about our partners, in a situation where they might be dressed up differently, and they might pretend to have a different profession, and the man is their client.
I’m not talking about prostitution, i’m talking about the women pretending to being a teacher, or a nurse, and her husband pretending to be a student or a patient. Or the man is the president of his company, and his wife is his sexy secretary. That makes things more exciting for a man. And it can also make things much more exciting for women.
Remember we should try
This post, which is the one that revived this thread makes some morally problematic suggestions. While some of what is stated may be correct, the suggestions offered seem to be based on creating lust, not love, in marriage. Lust is always a grave sin, whether it is in or out of a marriage.

It would depend on the motivation of the fantasy. If the desire is to fulfill a fantasy as opposed to being with the spouse it is wrong. If the acting out of a fantasy is viewed as someone you love going out of their way to please you, (motivated by love) it is a different story.

It isn’t just the actual engaging in the behavior it is the motivation towards a state of disengagement from the marriage whether adultry is involved or not. If the home life is such that a spouse turns to anything other than their spouse for comfort or companionship the relation is in trouble regardless if his pants stayed zipped or not.
Some are probably precisely interested in sex, and no more–maybe they think their ordinary sex lives are sparse or … ummm … uncolourful…
  1. Variety isn’t alway’s an interest in other women. or a desire for new “approaches”. It is also knowing that your spouse is interested in you enough to make an effort.
  2. (This is just a theory please don’t shoot) In the animal kingdom many animals have multiple female partners for a single male partner. Is it possible that their is some bioligical desire to spread one’s seed as wide as possible. Not endorsing such and idea, just trying to provide and objective point for consideration.

  1. re adultry: I doubt a mistress will ever break the mood by asking if you took out the garbage or paid the electric bill. It isn’t just the ties after the act it is also the ties before the act. Advice to you women: try to segregate live outside of the bed room from life in the bedroom, at least during romantic periods.
  2. Some in powerful possitions may want the opposite at home. E.G. if someone spends the entire day making decisions and telling people what to do, they may want to not have to play a similar role in bed.
I’ve known a few fellows whose wives would consent to have sex with them, but one gathered they hadn’t been smiled at or affectionately touched on the shoulder since before the wedding day. Do customers always believe they are using the poor girl? If they are looking for "sensations of being cherished " could they perceive that they are engaging in an equitable give and take?

A big “sure, maybe” to all of that. As I said, motivations are various–and certain men are way more complex than some women give them credit for. Not that a zillion motivations (understandable or otherwise) add up to an excuse.
Do customers always believe they are using the poor girl? If they are looking for "sensations of being cherished " could they perceive that they are engaging in an equitable give and take?
Dunno … I suppose it’s possible, but not very likely. A man who’s emotionally dull enough to buy into that and not doubt it on any deeper, subconscious level is probably shallow enough to be unconcerned with the emotional aspects in the first place.
The question is do we address the underlying motivation or do we chastize those who break?
As someone already said: both.

*The problem with this explanation, is that we can pretty much excuse and come up with motivations for every sin out there. Stealing, murdering, adultery, lying, etc etc…everyone has a motivation as to why they sin. Everyone. Men are not somehow unique and should be placed into a separate category for cheating and using prostitutes. Yes, there are motivations, but sin is sin. We seem to be going on for page after page, with yet another potentially ‘valid’ reason why a man might do this. Just like any sin, there will always be motivating factors, but we should really stop making it look like adultery is somehow that one sin that seems to have valid reasons for cheating. God didn’t say…thou shalt not commit adultery, well, except if your wife/husband is on the cold side, then it’s ok.

We need to stop rationalizing this. There is no VALID reason why a man seeks out a prostitute, only excuses to not regard it as sin. It is a husband and wife’s responsibility to love and serve each other, in many ways–true true true. But, we are responsible for our OWN SINS. *

All true. Still, the purpose of this thread was to explore the reasons why a man might visit a prostitute. And doing that in any depth means a careful balancing act: you can’t excuse it, but to answer the original question justly and charitably, one has to muster some degree of imaginative sympathy for these men in their various circumstances, all without abandoning our hatred of sin, without trivializing the plight of the real victims, and without overlooking the need for repentance and penitance.

And just as even our best actions and thoughts can be colored by sin, so even in certain kinds of sins–including “stealing, murdering, adultery, [and] lying”–there are seeds and ghosts of virtue that can be found as motivators even for wicked actions: they have no business being used as an excuse, but maybe they could act as a reminder to the sinner of his God-given better self, and as a signpost toward fruitful avenues of repentance and conversion.

*I understand that, but it seems that when it comes to porn viewing, cheating and the topic of why men go to strip clubs, prostitutes, etc…there seems to be more blame placed on others (namely wives), than on the person who is committing the sin. There is no VALID reason why a man seeks our a prostitute. That’s like saying there are valid reasons to sin…are there? No. There are things that lead us to sin…and in our weakness, we then sin. But, it’s our weakness that leads us to sin…even if we have the worst spouse in the world, we have to take ownership of our own sins done against them. I haven’t seen that mentioned. (by men other than mr p) That’s more of what I’m saying. *

Although I don’t think its an excuse, I think another valid point that needs to be addressed is that non-Christians/Catholics view ‘sin’ differently than the faithful. The man in the OP is non-Christian/Catholic & obviously has a different viewpoint than Christian/Catholic men. That’s not to say it is ok for a non-Christian/Catholic man to visit a prostitute, any more than its right for them to murder someone. However, in society as it is today, non-religious men do not see the same problems with sexual ‘sin’ as religious men & women. Society has popularized sex in all its facets - even prostitution - and made it more ‘acceptable’ to those who do not follow a strict moral code like Christians/Catholics. **It is definitely still a lack on their part (the men’s), but it is very ‘reasonable’ to them. **
