Why do mormons think it happened in south america?

"It is not certain that Joseph Smith placed Book of Mormon lands in Central America. His published statements indicate that Book of Mormon peoples or their descendants, migrated from “the lake country of America” (near Lake Ontario) to Mexico and Central America.

In 1841 Joseph Smith read Stephens’ Incidents of Travel in Central America. Smith held Stephens’ work in high regard and recommended it. However, Stephens’ bestseller did not change Smith’s position that Book of Mormon events took place in northern America, in lands occupied by the United States.

In his “AMERICAN ANTIQUITIES” editorial of July, 1842, Joseph Smith corroborates wars described in the Book of Mormon with archaeological finds in northern America."

Where did these elaborate maps of Central and South American Mormon occupation come from? Not from the prophet J. Smith.

Didn’t you notice the official position of the Church with regard to BoM geography stated at the beginning of that article?:

“The LDS church has no official position on the geography of the Book of Mormon.”

Yes, but I thought it is considered common knowledge that it all took place in South and Middle America except for the last battle.

Whatever is said is somebody’s opinion. Nothing definitive is known or revealed about Book of Mormon geography.

Of course they left a trace of themselves. Where do you think the archaeological remains of Central and South America came from?
 
The only problem is the time line of when they supposedly came over is off by a few thousand years. We have evidence of people already living here way before they arrived. There is a possibility they might have arrived but they weren’t the first people to inhabit America.

Archaeological remains in Central & South America? What Archaeological remains? You mean the Aztec stuff? Oh wait maybe you mean the Myan stuff? No? Must be the Incas then… funny none of their DNA matches up. Gosh darnit!

The part that is strange to me is that we can point to most of the places named in the Bible today. We cannot do that with certainty for the BoM…

Any ideas on that Zerinus?

Smith also wrote that the native-Americans were descendants of the Lost Tribes of Israel. Unfortunately for Smith, DNA has shown that no native-American tribe, or any tribe in the New World, had a Semitic background of any type.

There is also noarchaelogical finds that substantiate Smith’s assertions of wars in North America as described in the Book of Mormon.
