The answer to that is actually yes. See the videos that why me gave in this thread:

I wrote an article about that in my Blog, that you might find interesting:

See also the videos in the above link.

Yes, I’m on that thread too.

See my comments and link to another video that shows more definitive proof refuting those links you are referring too:
found a very informative video entitled “The Bible vs. The Book of Mormon”. This one video offers interviews with many anthropologists, other historians and scholars, including LDS anthropologists. It is a little over 1 hour long and logically approaches the writings of the Bible and Book of Mormon and compares those writings to evidence or lack of evidence that exists to this day.

Until I see some accuracy in testing I can’t really believe that the dates match as you claim.

But I did find it interesting.

I think the best answer has already been stated in a previous post. LDS use the KJV because it was the bible in use at the time of Joseph Smith. It doesn’t have anything to do with accuracy. There are more accurate English translations today than the KJV. I don’t think that is in great dispute among scholars. The BoM was written in the same form of English as the KJV, so if the LDS were to accept a modern English translation of the bible, they would also have to translate the BoM, D&C, and Pearl of Great Price into modern English as well. I don’t think they want to do that.

This whole debate is somewhat silly because it only deals with English. Another poster has been complaining incessantly about modern translations. But the truth is that it’s no different translating into modern English than it is into other completely different languages. The bible has been translated into almost every language on earth. Does KJV English mean anything to Japanese, Chinese, French, Italians or someone from an African country? No, of course not. The bible is translated into those languages as well. There is never a perfect translation from one version of English to another, let alone into completely different languages. But somehow the bible has been miraculously preserved through all these translations.

The bottom line is that scripture must be translated into languages currently spoken by all peoples in order for it to be understood. That includes English, and as the English language has evolved new translations must be made in order to preserve, not change, the original meaning of the authors. This is done through painstakingly difficult scholarly work. I thank God for them and I believe that the Holy Spirit has guided them throughout the centuries to preserve the bible.

Now scripture is not the final arbiter of what scripture means. When man takes that approach, new denominations are created. There must be an official interpreter. The Church existed before the bible as we know it today. It is the Church, not scripture, that is the “pillar and foundation of truth” (1 Tim 3:15). The Catholic Church is the only church that has been doing this for 2000 years. That is where I place my trust. I refuse to fall for the conspiracy theories of Mormonism, Jehovas Witnesses, Seventh Day Adventists, and many others who attempt to tear down the original Church of Christ in order to legitimize their own existence.

Slightly off track, I am interested to know why so many Catholics are so interested in Mormonism and entertain them when they are so insulting to us?

A family member of mine when her husband was at Mass, was visited by Mormons, on explaining she was not interested as she was married to and respected Catholicism, the guys completely demolished her, convinced her she was already numbered among the dead and she had a nervous breakdown.

I would go to the aid of anyone, anyone that is except for a Mormon. For two men to gang up on and bully a woman into a nervious breakdown is to my mind so so sick yet Catholics everywhere [least over here] seem to go to extraordinary lengths to entertain them.???

Blessings and peace
When missionaries are at a door, with no one else there, they can say anything and no one is there to point out the lies they are telling and call them on it. Such as, the lies they were giving to your friend.

Here, we can, and do.

I don’t think they want to do that.
And in some of the LDS doctrines (like their thinking that 1 Corinthians refers to their celestial and terrestial heavens) I really think that the old language that is hard to understand serves their purpose. I mean if the LDS did translate the archaic way of speaking into something more easily understood, the people would know that there was not something correct. Same holds true if the LDS allowed other Bibles besides the KJV–well not the Doauy-Rheimes because the original is actually slightly older than the KJV, but it is Catholic and that’s the strike against it as far as they are concerned.)

Since I like to compare Biblical verses, I’ll compare five to the KJV and hope you see what I mean. Oh, and remember that Joseph Smith said that there were three levels of heaven–the celestial, the terrestial, and a made-up word, the tellestial.

The King James Version (Protestant)–
there are also celestial bodies and bodies terrestial: but the glory of the celestial is one and the glory of the terrestial is another.
The Doauy-Rheimes (Catholic and slightly older than the KJV)–
And there are bodies celestial, and bodies terrestrial: but one is the glory of the celestial, and another of the terrestial
The next verse makes it clear that the sun, moon, and stars are being spoken about–the heavenly bodies.

The New International Version (Protestant)–
There are heavenly bodies and there are earthly bodies; but the splender of the heavenly bodies is on kind and the splender of the earthly bodies is another.
The American Standard Bible (Protestant)–
There are also heavenly bodies and earthly bodies, but the glory of the heavenly is one and the glory of the earthly is another.
The Jerusalem (Catholic)–
Then there are heavenly bodies and there are earthly bodies; but the heavenly bodies have a beauty of their own and the earthly bodies have a different one.
The National American Bible (NAB which is Catholic)–
There are both heavenly bodies and earthy bodies, but the brightness of the heavenly is one kind and that of the earthly are another.

In response to someone who claimed that some Mormon elders ganged up on her and caused a nervous breakdown, sorry I know for a fact that the missionaries do not gang on anyone and are only sharing what the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints believes versus the false statements I read time and time again about what I and other Mormons believe. Ask me or go to www.mormon.org.

I do not understand this tactic of saying “Mormons don’t do X” when people here share their personal experiences of Mormons doing X to their families and friends. Do you just assume that everyone who has had a bad experience with Mormons is lying, or do you mean to say “Mormons AREN’T SUPPOSED to do X, even though some do” but your love of your religion has not allowed you to criticize it, even when people practice it incorrectly?

Welcome to CAF.

A little suggestion. When you want to link to something specific to support something you are saying, you should link directly to the supporting statement and not a “whole” website at large.

For example, I want you to read something the early Church fathers wrote, you can find that by clicking the link. (Warning, there are 38 volumes of what they wrote there.) Do you see my point?

Another suggestion is to try your best to stick to the topic of the thread. I’ll admit, subjects being discussed can change and often do, but it’s always nice to try and stay on topic.

Now, what brings you to CAF?

Sorry. Don’t doubt the story at all. There are some missionaries that exhibit bad behavior, although most don’t. (I have actually experienced one missionary’s bad behavior–raising voice, “posturing”, being arrogant and trying to “talk down”–and even his partner was shocked (but got very quiet)! I can just imagine if I had been emotionally vulnerable or depressed at the time! Still the memory is one of the reasons that I don’t particularly like talking with the Missionaries.) Quite frankly, people are people, and don’t exhibit stellar behavior all the time. It’s “human nature” that the “good” end up paying for the “bad” mistakes of others.
