Why do Muslims believe that the Modern New Testament is corrupted?

Forgive me if I am redundant with this post, but I would like to inquire why Muslim scholars consider the New Testament a corrupt work…First we know that in Muhammad’s time (circa 650 AD) that he accepted the New Testament as valid and its truths could be read and studied by his followers. However, as time passed and Muslim scholars found that the teachings of Jesus as shown in the NT presented them with a problem. For if you take out the passages that deal with Jesus’s proclaiming himself as God, or his fleshing out the dogma of the three persons in one God, or that he died on the cross for our sins and his subsequent Resurrection, then you are left with a very thin book indeed. What is left is probably a book only 1/3 the original size that would fall over if it stood alone.
Unfortunately anyone who takes the view that the NT has some how been corrupted after Muhammad’s death has a problem to deal with. Over the last 200 years researchers from our faith and other non-Christian beliefs have been able to find complete New Testament bibles that date something like this: The Vaticanus (325-350 AD), the Sinaiticus(340-350 AD), Alexandrinus (450 AD), the Athanasius (367 AD), and the Codex Sinai (325 AD). Then there is one the Peshitta Syriac that I have seen listed as either 150-250 AD or as 375-400 AD. Anyhow, as Catholics, (but not those who profess the Protestant faith) we don’t need to use these works to prove that the NT was ever corrupted. For we don’t need to look any further than the Apostolic Fathers who lived from between 100 AD to 300 AD. You see, we have their letters and writings and these early real Christians had a habit of quoting large sections of the New Testament verbatim. In fact, we can reconstruct over 4/5ths of the New Testament from their collective writings.
So we Catholics have two authentic sources to draw on whereas Muslim scholars have to accept the word of Muhammid that the NT bible of his time was true and authentic but much later was somehow tampered with. How can this NT bible be corrupted if we can take it back to the time of an Apostolic Father like St. Ignatius of Antioch, St. Polycarp, (who both knew St. John and St. Peter personally) or Justin Martyr to name but a few.
I would say that a Catholic has a shorter distance to travel between the writings of the original authors and their final publishing of Christ word than a Muslim has to go between Muhammid’s teachings and the final publication of the Qu’ran. This implies that the shorter the time distance from the source to the finished publication, the less likely that any later confusion or errors can seep into a text no matter if it is the word of God. Which of your Caliphs collected all the sacred writings to establish a complete and reliable work then burnt the source material so that there would never be any confusion concerning the earlier sources? So time does matter if you want to avoid confusion. Would anyone of our helpful and informative Muslim posters like to correct me if I am ignorant of their position? Thanks.

Since the Bible existed before the Quran the burden of proof
is upon the Muslim to prove that the Bible is incorrect AND
that the Quran is correct.

In 1064, Ibn-Khazem, FIRST charged that the Bible had been
corrupted and the Bible falsified. This charge was to defend
Islam against Christianity because Ibn-Khazem come upon
differences and contradiction between the Bible and the
Quran. Believing, by faith that the Quran was true, the Bible
must then be false. He said, “Since the Quran must be true it
must be the conflicting Gospel texts that are false. But
Muhammad tells us to respect the Gospel. Therefore, the
present text must have been falsified by the Christians after
the time of Muhammad.”
His argument was not based on any evidence or historical facts
but only on his personal faith, reasoning and desire to
safeguard the Quran.
This led him to teach that, “The Christians lost the revealed
Gospel except for a few traces which God has left intact as
argument against them.”

I had the opportunity to spend a year in a Muslim country and discuss these things with them.

What I found is that Muslims are often versed in the Muslim version of Christianity as a straw man that they then tear down. As a part of that process, they are shown specific contradictions in the Bible.

For instance, they will point to Matthew 1:16 (“and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ”) and then to Luke 3:23 (“Now Jesus himself was about thirty years old when he began his ministry. He was the son, so it was thought, of Joseph, the son of Heli,”) and then ask, “So who was Joseph’s father? Jacob? or Heli?”

There are plenty of these types of things that they look to, which proves to them that the Bible was corrupted by man since it cannot be infallible with these types of contradictions.

From there, their logical conclusion is that any doctrine that is at odds with Islam is also a corruption from the actual teachings of Christ, since both Jesus and Mohammad were prophets of the same God in their minds…

They also look to the different historical texts that you mentioned, and they note that there are many discrepancies between the texts. For instance, the in the texts used to translate many versions, Mark 9:29 reads "He replied, “This kind can come out only by prayer.” But the texts used to translate the King James Version have the additional “And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.”

There are plenty of resources at their disposal to point these sorts of things out, proving to them that the Bible is corrupted. Since they believe that Jesus was a legitimate prophet, it has to be a corruption, not Jesus’s original errors. (They are also erroneously led to believe that Jesus brought the New Testament, which of course wasn’t written for many years after His death and resurrection.).

Does a Catholic really care if the Muslims reject the NT? I certainly don’t. That is there problem.

I want to say that as a Catholic living in the south, this sounds pretty familiar.

Actually, I know exactly what you are talking about.

It was after seeing this anti-Christian methodology in Islam that I came back at recognized the exact same spirit aimed at Catholicism, but at no other denomination. That spoke loudly to me and is one of the main reasons that I decided to take a fresh look at the Catholic Church, of which I am not yet a member, but on the road to becoming one.

I recognized that same loud voice a number of years ago. Keep listening. Welcome.

The Bible is indeed corrupted and unreliable and the Bible itself records God Almighty as saying this:

"`How can you say, “We [the Jews] are wise, for we have the law of the LORD,” when actually the lying pen of the scribes has handled it falsely?" (From the NIV Bible, Jeremiah 8:8)

In Deuteronomy 31:25-29, Prophet Moses (peace be upon him) predicted the corruption/tampering of the Law (Bible) after his death.

25 he gave this command to the Levites who carried the ark of the covenant of the LORD :
26 "Take this Book of the Law and place it beside the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God. There it will remain as a witness against you.
27 For I know how rebellious and stiff-necked you are. If you have been rebellious against the LORD while I am still alive and with you, how much more will you rebel after I die!
28 Assemble before me all the elders of your tribes and all your officials, so that I can speak these words in their hearing and call heaven and earth to testify against them.
29 For I know that after my death you are sure to become utterly corrupt and to turn from the way I have commanded you. In days to come, disaster will fall upon you because you will do evil in the sight of the LORD and provoke him to anger by what your hands have made."

The Book of Moses predicted that the Law (Bible) will get corrupted. The Book of Jeremiah which came approximately 826 years after did indeed confirm this corruption.

You can read the history of man’s corruption of the Bible here.

Hamba,

Assuming that you are correct, why did Jesus not point out these corruptions? Or Isaia? Or Elija? Or Elisha? Or any of the other Prophets between Moses and Mohammid? Why not give a clear example of the corruption?

Now, I do think that Moses was correct. The people did turn from the Law, but there is no proof that the law, in and of itself, was changed. They just did not follow it.

Jeremiah could just as well be a statement about following false religions. That is what it seems to be to be warning against, because if I am not mistaken, the whole book is a warning to return to God.

It is not just corruptions.

It is the transfer of Christianity from the middle east to EUROPE.

The failure to preserve the original language of Jesus, the FACT that the bible was NOT written by Jesus or in his time or Jesus did not see the bible compiled or completed…

DIFFERENT authors completed the bible often centuries after the passing of Jesus…

With GREEK being the original language used…

The rise of Roman Christianity, the power of the Church connected to the political power of Rome,

Adoption of PAGAN acts, like Christmas day being on 25TH DECEMBER near to the pagan winter solstice, to entice pagans…

Centuries of similar abuses.

Finally the REFORMATION when Christianity and the bible was made to fit in with society, NOT society fit in with Gods will.

Look at how many translations and VERSIONS of the bible there are, not ONLY does the bible CONTRADICT itself it contradicts the other bibles.

You haven’t posted anything new. We’ve heard the same arguments from Muslim “apologists” before. Can’t you come up with anything original?

Why do Muslims believe that the Modern New Testament is corrupted?

because if they don’t, they’ll admit that Muhammad is a false prophet.

Well, pretty much everything you say is true.

There are wide variances between some of the versions of the Bible. The Church did adopt holidays to coincide with pagan holidays. The Bible was not written in Aramaic. Different authors wrote the different books. Reformed Protestants do wrap the Bible around their opinions and society. All of this is true.

What you miss, though, is any depth of understanding of these things.

The Church adopted holidays to coincide with pagan holidays, not as an appeasement to pagans, but to squelch and drown out the paganism. It is a move of masterful wisdom that has been very effective. How much of the paganism that they sought to drown out is still prevalent?

The Bible was not written in Aramaic because it was a minority language. Greek was chosen so that the Gospel of Christ would be available to as many people as possible, since that was one of the primary international languages of the time. Again, a move of masterful wisdom, making the written Word much more available to those whom it was intended to reach.

Christ did not come and promise us a book. If Christ had wanted us to be “people of the book,” as Muslims call us, then He would have written one. But instead He promised us the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Truth, which is the guiding force of the True Church that Christ established. Scriptures are more of a letter of introduction to God, and not the ultimate authority that Protestants hold them to be. That authority authority was given to the Church that canonized the Scriptures.

Different authors wrote different books, but this is because the Bible is not a book, but a pocket-library of Sacred writings from thousands of years of prophets, the majority of which are prophets recognized by Muslims. What is the problem with compiling all of their works into one volume? What

Using the Protestant Reformation as an argument against Christianity would be like using the schism by Ali bin abu Taleb as an argument against Islam. (Tell me that Islam is not political…your historic Caliph is both Pope and King, and there is no distinction. Muslims have no ground to stand on with that accusation against the Vatican.) Or better yet, if the Ahmadiya sect of Islam gained a lot of traction, would that be an argument against Islam? The chaos that you see in Christendom is born of the sinful nature of men who despise authority and have been inoculated against the True Church personally established by Christ. They are in various degrees of heresy or apostasy or schism based upon wrapping God around their opinions like you rightly assert, depending on which of the 38,000 denominations that you look at. This was prophesied to occur by Christ and at least two of His apostles, and is an argument against human nature, not against Christianity or the Catholic Church, which has been consistent for 2000 years.

The variant versions of Biblical translations are from the same thing: the arrogance of men who determine that they know better, without submitting to the Authority of the Church. And this is reaching ridiculous levels with “paraphrase Bibles” that are not Bibles at all, but private interpretations and not even translations.

They just don’t believe it is the all work of God. 🤷
And special revelations for Mohammed to obtain more wives than other Muslims, 20% of all booty taken in war, permission to marry his adopted sons’ wife, and clearing Aisha of adultary is all the work of God?

Why do you accept God said those things to Mohammed, but not Jesus being crucified as witnessed by many, and recorded by four?

The following verses of the Qur’an would refer to Christians who willingly place more faith in the authority of the Church rather than the Commands of their Creator as found in their own Bible:

Al-Qur’an, 009.031-035
They take their priests and their anchorites to be their lords in derogation of Allah, and (they take as their Lord) Christ the son of Mary; yet they were commanded to worship but One Allah: there is no god but He. Praise and glory to Him: (Far is He) from having the partners they associate (with Him).
Fain would they extinguish Allah’s light with their mouths, but Allah will not allow but that His light should be perfected, even though the Unbelievers may detest (it).
It is He Who hath sent His Messenger with guidance and the Religion of Truth, to proclaim it over all religion, even though the Pagans may detest (it).
O ye who believe! there are indeed many among the priests and anchorites, who in Falsehood devour the substance of men and hinder (them) from the way of Allah. And there are those who bury gold and silver and spend it not in the way of Allah: announce unto them a most grievous penalty-
On the Day when heat will be produced out of that (wealth) in the fire of Hell, and with it will be branded their foreheads, their flanks, and their backs, their flanks, and their backs.- "This is the (treasure) which ye buried for yourselves: taste ye, then, the (treasures) ye buried!"

Fortunately, we don’t follow the Qur’an so we don’t have to acknowledge its authority to pronounce such things. Just like we don’t have to believe that shooting stars are Jinn trying to listen in to Heaven. Nor do we allow other religions to define us.

However, the Bible does say, "Dear children, this is the last hour; and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come. This is how we know it is the last hour. They went out from us, but they did not really belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us; but their going showed that none of them belonged to us.
But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth. I do not write to you because you do not know the truth, but because you do know it and because no lie comes from the truth. Who is the liar? It is the man who denies that Jesus is the Christ. Such a man is the antichrist—he denies the Father and the Son. No one who denies the Son has the Father; whoever acknowledges the Son has the Father also.

See that what you have heard from the beginning remains in you. If it does, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father. And this is what he promised us—even eternal life.

I am writing these things to you about those who are trying to lead you astray. As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit—just as it has taught you, remain in him."

And so it would seem that for us to follow this passage of the Qur’an, then we would have to reject the Qur’an including this passage since the Bible says to, and we have to obey the Commands of God.

In other words, we are at an impass.

The following verses of the Qur’an …:
…are empty threats with no power over my soul.
Al-Qur’an, 009.031-035
They take … a most grievous penalty-
On the Day when heat will be produced out of that (wealth) in the fire of Hell, and with it will be branded their foreheads, their flanks, and their backs, their flanks, and their backs.- "This is the (treasure) which ye buried for yourselves: taste ye, then, the (treasures) ye buried!"
We should take it into context.
Al-Qur’an, 009.026-030
But Allah did pour His calm on the Messenger and on the Believers, and sent down forces which ye saw not: He punished the Unbelievers; *thus doth He reward those without Faith. *
Again will Allah, after this, turn (in mercy) to whom He will: for Allah is Oft- forgiving, Most Merciful.
O ye who believe! Truly the Pagans are unclean; so let them not, after this year of theirs, approach the Sacred Mosque. And if ye fear poverty, soon will Allah enrich you, if He wills, out of His bounty, for Allah is All-knowing, All-wise.
***Fight those ***who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth, (even if they are) of the People of the Book, until **they pay the Jizya **with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued.
The Jews call 'Uzair a son of Allah, and the Christians call Christ the son of Allah. That is a saying from their mouth; (in this) they but imitate what the unbelievers of old used to say. ***Allah.s curse be on them: how they are deluded away from the Truth! ***searchtruth.com/chapter_display.php?chapter=9&translator=2&mac=
Chapter 9 is widely accepted to be one of the last revealed before Mohammed died, or do you disagree? If not a call to war with those who are non-Muslim, what is it? If I willingly submit my tax $ to you will there be peace with the Muslims? What is allahs curse? What is the “Cause of allah” so often spoke about in the Qur’an? How do you know it is the Angel Gabriel? What sura identifies itself? What hadith?

The one who spoke these words to Mohammed for him to recite to you; lied. It is not who you think it is.

… And so it would seem that for us to follow this passage of the Qur’an, then we would have to reject the Qur’an including this passage since the Bible says to, and we have to obey the Commands of God…
Christians have to obey the Commands of God, you say??

Actually, I am not asking Christians to follow verses of the Qur’an… at least, not yet at this point in time.

What I am asking however, is for Christians to faithfully obey the Ten Commandments as found in your very own Bible.

Exodus 20:2–17
2 I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery;
3 Do not have any other gods before me.
4 You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.
5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, punishing children for the iniquity of parents, to the third and the fourth generation of those who reject me,
6 but showing steadfast love to the thousandth generation of those who love me and keep my commandments.
7 You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not acquit anyone who misuses his name.
8 Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy.
9 For six days you shall labour and do all your work.
10 But the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God; you shall not do any work—you, your son or your daughter, your male or female slave, your livestock, or the alien resident in your towns.
11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but rested the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and consecrated it.
12 Honor your father and your mother, so that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.
13 You shall not murder.
14 You shall not commit adultery.
15 You shall not steal.
16 You shall not bear false witness against your neighbour.
17 You shall not covet your neighbour’s house; you shall not covet your neighbour’s wife, or male or female slave, or ox, or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbour.

Now, let us examine this verse of the Qur’an:

They take their priests and their anchorites to be their lords in derogation of Allah, and (they take as their Lord) Christ the son of Mary; yet they were commanded to worship but One Allah: there is no god but He. Praise and glory to Him: (Far is He) from having the partners they associate (with Him).Al-Qur’an, 009.031

And we also need to consider the following particular Commandments:

**3 Do not have any other gods before me.

4 You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, punishing children for the iniquity of parents, to the third and the fourth generation of those who reject me,**

and then let us take a look at the following pictures:

Therefore, the question that Christians really do need to ask themselves is:

Is it Christians… or… is it instead Muslims who are far more steadfast in faithfully obeying the Commands of God as written in the Bible?
