Why do non-Catholics ask you if you accept Jesus into your heart ?

I first thanked God for answering my prayers. I then thanked my family, friends and the three saints I implored for praying for me. After revealing to a relative (a former Catholic) that I implored specific saints to pray for me, she asked if I had accepted Jesus Christ into my heart and told me He needed to be first.
