I’ve never been married (and proably never will be, the way things are going…

but oh well… So God chooses to bless me more than others… what can i say? :D)

anyway…

i think one reason pepole don’t stay married - if not THE reason - is that there is so much illicit sex on TV and movies… and people just don’t take God’s version of how sex should be seriously…

What do you married / divorced people think?

Because they don’t love eachother, they don’t love God, and they don’t love themselves.

Because they are perpetually dissastified, and never content. Because they’re hearts are in the wrong places, because this society is one of consumerism, and the only people who buy are the ones who want.

“Our hearts are restless until they rest in you” said Augustine.

Because Love is willful, conscious self sacrifice for the other, and this society despieses all pain, all suffering, and all sacrifice.

Because we are selfish. Because we are human. Because we have turned our backs on God and Love, because there is no Hope, and we’ve lost all Faith.

Because the air is thick of pornography, because the wind reeks of fornication. Because the light of the sun is Red. Because we believe that no one can ever love their parents in any way but a sexaully repressed way. Because we believe that male and female are societal constructs, and have no real psychosexual basis.

Because chivalry is not dead, anymore than unicorns are dead. Because honour was just an excuse to slay your neighbor and avoid the noose. Because honesty never existed. Because fidelity never existed. Because “no one is good but God”.

Because the Red sea was no more than a marsh. Because Jonas was never swallowed by a whale. Because Adam and Eve are allagorical. Because we’re no more than intelligent apes. Because we can trust no one. Because we cannot even trust ourselves.

Because we see ourselves, and hate ourselves, and see ourselves in everyone else, and hate them for it. Because a spirit of Justic still resides within us causing us to want to leap into Perditions flames, knowing how guilty we really are.

Because we’re animals, who cannot control of every urge, but are in fact, slaves to our desires. Because “God” is just there to keep you unhappy. Because "God is just there to keep you delusionally happy.

Because we wan’t to be happy on this earth.

Because nobody makes love anymore.

They simply masturbate inside eachother.

Because every action in this life seems to be some sort of masturbation, pointless, fruitless, unsatisfying, empty, worthless, useless, godless.

And wrong.

Because we are wrong.

That is why.

Been married for 47 years. The reason that my marriage has lasted? Marriage takes 3 people-husband,wife, and God. The correct order is God first. If you are not committed to God,you will never be committed to your wife and children. When you truely love God, you are able to handle your EGO-your selfishness. A priest friend of mine told me that he feels selfishness is the biggest problem in the world today.Selfishness=divorces and lack of Vocations to priesthood and religious life. Selfishness also makes a person less likely to commit to marriage and a selfish person is drawn to a live-in arrangment.

May God bless the family-it is becoming an endangered species.

People don’t stay married because they think they have a “right” to be happy.

They don’t.

Be happy or don’t be happy… that’s not the point. The point is to be obedient.

Profound, and heartfelt. Thank you.

I think many folks do not stay married these days because they lack true love.
True love is taught to those who are desireous of learning from the One who teaches.
The example He gave us is free.
We need only want it and ask for His help.
True love is also hard to do.
It gives all to the other.
All your hopes for the future,
All claims to happiness,
All needs of self-esteem,
And quite often even your need for good health.
Always the Other comes first.
Marriage is God’s customized path for two people to attain heaven.
But like every other path many reject the way.

My dear friend
I’ve always been single but I think the answer is one word - sin. Sin is the cause of all evils and bad things in the world and our lives. If couples did not sin or sin against eachother and live the way God intended then they would not divorce. It’s natural for a man and woman to live together but marriage has been elevated to a sacrament now. We need grace to do anything good and this means that for a man and woman to live together forsaking all others and to love each other til death us do part a lot of grace is needed. To restore what we lost with original sin God made marriage a sacrament. So sacramental marriage is the type of marriage God wants all to have. This is for our own good because we need that grace God gives to allow us to live in a communion of love with eachother and God. God wants to be part of the marriage too and sin blocks God out of the relationship. Divorce doess irreparable damage to the children often too. It’s very selfish and self centred often. There may be cause for a wife to leave if hubby is very violent and for various reasons. But this broken marriage is because of sin too. To have a successful marriage we need grace.

I was talking to some divorcees who are protestant recently and they told me I was too legalistic in my approach to this subject. Does anyone else think this? I try to present the truth in an easy to understand and reasonable way.

God bless:)

First, I don’t see anything legalistic in what you wrote. Maybe it doesn’t come across so grace-fully in speech. Or maybe they are just defensive to begin with.

Next, I think that as a society we’ve sold our kids (especially our daughters) a Disney-esque bill of goods in which they grow up believing that a good marriage means “happily-ever-after” and when the inevitable difficult times come along, they think they must have married the wrong person or that their marriage is irretreivable. They don’t know (because we don’t tell them) that a long marriage takes commitment that stays put when things get 1) boring 2) contentious 3) tiring.

None of this is to deny the need for grace.Without grace, I’m sure my marriage wouldn’t have survived. 😃

IMHO - lack of understanding of what marriage is; lack of “vision”, & lack of self-sacrifice. Physical coupling among humans is important for its meaning, which is the communion mostly intimately found in Holy Communion. 🙂

I think there are numerous reasons why people don’t stay married anymore. Part of it is due to changes in the U.S. culture. Part of it is due to lack of good, married role models. Part of it is that people have no idea what love really is.
One of the most cited reasons people don’t stay married is a disagreement on how responsibilities will be divided up during the marriage. Many woman bought into the idea of the woman having it all, career, husband and children. They see themselves as multi-tasking gurus or superwomen, until they have checked off the husband and children as things to achieve in life. They’re run ragged, stressed, and their children are babysat by computers, tv and games that give the children instant satisfaction. Woman frequently discover that their husband is “too tired” to help around the house, so not only do they end up doing the traditional chores, they also are trying to deal with stress from work. In recent years men have been able to duck out of responsibility. About 50% of the time, there is no man in the home to teach boys to be strong Christians, responsible citizens, defenders of women etc. They learn about relationships from television. There is no man there to guide them into make good choices. There are mothers who feel guilty for not having a male role model for their son, so they end up spoiling and coddling their sons. These sons reach a certain age, get married and expect to be coddled and spoiled by their tired, stressed out, working wives. Most women are shocked when they have to force Prince Charming into changing a baby’s diaper. The spoiled husband is shocked that he is expected to leave his game and change a diaper. Then these husbands resent the time the woman spends coddling the baby, because it cuts down on the time the woman used to spend coddling them. The husband then decides that she doesn’t love him anymore, because the mother is busy trying to be both father and mother to the children he has come to resent. Then the mother looks around one day and thinks “Gee, I don’t have three children. I have four,” as she begins to realize that her husband never grew up and became a responsible adult.
The husband in turn, will often leave the wife, for another woman who is unencumbered and willing to coddle and spoil him. You can insert wife for husband on many occasions, because some women are just as selfish and clueless.
What we are seeing is the fruit of “The Me Generation.” Immature young adults who don’t have any idea that love isn’t like a drug that makes you feel good all the time. Love isn’t about making a checklist of what you are supposed to have in life and feeling ecstatic that you have it.
Once young people understand what love and responsibility is, which is what they yearn for, the divorce rate will go down. God is love. Once they can absorb that fact and understand the responsibilities that come with loving God, then we will see more happily married people.

My dear friend

Thanks for the feedback. I think your right about them being defensive. I’m not judging them but I don’t think they know that. I’m just trying to help them. I’ll keep praying for them.

I have been praying and I think they tried to go to a catholic church for the stations on Good Friday, and there’s talk of going back to an old parish for one who was catholic to catch up with a priest he liked. Maybe the prayers will work???

God bless you:)

People don’t stay married because they think they have a “right” to be happy.

They don’t.

Be happy or don’t be happy… that’s not the point. The point is to be obedient.
They also think it’s their spouse’s responsibility to make and keep them happy.

Brilliant 👍 :clapping:

Sometimes we make a mistake and the most important thing to concur that mistake is to have faith, if your marriage has no faith, your marriage has no chance … is what I think.

What and interesting thread with many interesting responses.

I have been married almost 25 years now. Mostly happily. Also, I am a recent revert after well… longer than 25 years anyway… 🙂

Why do not many people stay married? It’s the culture of instant gratification and instant fixes. Most in our culture treat “happiness” like they treat a vending machine. You put your money in, pull a lever, and then you are “happy”. When you learn this was not enough, well, it’s easy enough to go back to the vending machine.

IMHO, this expectation of instant gratification spreads across everything from sex, material possessions, etc. Marriage is just one piece of the pie now. I won’t even get started on how the media and gov’t view “gay” marriage either.

It’s very sad. I have two teen age boys and it is very very difficult to raise them as good authentic people.

A lack of God and lack of practicing Faith by both spouses fundamentally I believe, however I’ve seen many marriages break-up due to abuse, alcoholism or drug abuse, gambling issues, prolific adultury, depression, mental illness. I’ve also seen marriages break up where one spouse decided they no longer loved the other and left.

I’ve seen some dumb reasons for people to marry. Immaturity, desperation, might as well attitude. I know two girls who were in love with the idea of love and a white princess wedding, both marriages ended. I was pregnant, that was a stupid reason.

I know several marriages that ended because the husband met a former gf and thought that was their one true love.

I believe unless a couple are in love with God first and both practice their Faith, so many things can come into play that will cause conflict and separation. As sin compounds sin, as a person separates more away from God, marriages are at risk of disintergration.

So many marriages start off with sin. Sex before marriage is prolific, so is contraception, and I don’t think contraception brings couple’s together as they’ve placed a barrier already between themselves and God.

Most Catholics my age I know of, were never reallly taught that our doctrines stem from God, so many Catholics have practiced sex before marriage, use contraception and thus bring this sin into a marriage. I wasn’t even given much pre-marriage counselling. Just told by the priest to go to a non denom/non religious 2 day marriage prep course.

And I’ve seen quite a few marriage break downs were if the spouses or one of them no longer loved the other, that meant they should separate and go and find someone else they would love.

I think some people watch too much garbage on TV and read too many princess fairy tales and honestly have no idea of what marriage really is all about before they join together in holy matrimony. Nothing holy about most of the marriages I’ve seen. Don’t know why it is called holy matrimony.

I hope my kids become religious.

Although I agree with the poor quality of the media we ingest, I would add that very few people have had (while a child) any good marital role models. Even a large part of those who were the parents of the baby-boomer generation only knew to stay married but resent their spouse very plainly. I personally can’t think of any childhood role model who respected, were fully committed for life and truly loved their spouse (even when they disagreed with them) . Let alone allowing God into their “marriage”!

Well, in my case, my ex told me he “never thought marriage was for life anyways”. He forgot to mention that back in our dating days, unfortunately, or I would have broken off our relationship then. It wasn’t until he left that he mentioned that. No fault divorce makes it so easy to just slip away. Marriage is the only contract where there are no legal penalties for breaking it.

Sometimes we make a mistake and the most important thing to concur that mistake is to have FAITH, if your marriage has no FAITH, your marriage has no chance …

I think comments should only be made on this is you are married or have been.
