Why Do People Leave Mass Early?

I was so impressed when as Minister of Welcome last Sunday there were essentially no parishers leaving early at 12:30 mass. I don’t open the doors until the priest is half way down the isle anyway.

There have been many leaving right after communion and about half the congregation leaves literally on the heels of the priest as he departs. That would be the cue for our choral director to chose a song with 8 verses. Then to make the announcement, “the second recessional hymn will be …” 🤷 The group loves to sing. We don’t.

That said, we don’t have that much of a problem of people leaving early. I am sure the many people standing out in the atrium, leave early, but no one can see them. Other than that group, maybe a handful will leave before the final blessing. We are so crowded that leaving early would require you to step over a lot of kneeling people.

I always taught my son that Mass was over when Father’s foot hit the atrium. One announcement like that should be enough. If people still leave early don’t worry about it, there is no reason to embarrass them. No need to call them Judas. They know what they are doing is wrong. Would you walk up to someone you know is living with someone else without the benefit of marriage and yell, “fornicator.” :eek:

That last line was a joke, don’t go crazy yelling at me about it. 👍

  2. They decided they have better things to do with their time.
  3. They went home to go to sleep, after being bored to death in Mass
  4. They went home to get change, since they forgot to put money in the collection plate and they need change for a $5 bill
  5. They came to their senses and converted to another religion, or better yet, no religion at all.
 
I feel that people leave early because they aren’t willing to give themselves completely to God. They are more involved in secular things. Last time I had to leave early from Mass is because of a family medical emergency. Other than that I haven’t left mass early in quite some time, maybe 4 years. I was selfish during the times that I left early, except for the family emergency.
 
Has anyone tried handing out tickets as people arrive and then having door prizes at the end?

wouldn’t that defeat the whole purpose of attending Mass??? The Mass isn’t a carnival it is a celebration
 
Protestants (at least when I grew up) didn’t have anything similar to “The Mass is ended; go now in peace”. So if a priest says that before the final hymn, I could see how the congregation would think it’s time to run to their car before they get in a traffic jam.

My corollary:
  1. They wanted to rush to the fancy restaurant where many of them congregate after Mass in order to get the best table in the room.
  2. They are double-parked. They only came in to “get the host.”
  3. Their doctors advised them not to go more than 40-45 minutes without a cigarette in the morning.
  4. The Starbucks they brought to Mass is now empty and needs re-filling.
  5. They have absolutely no clue they are being incredibly rude.

People leave Mass early because they have little respect for the Mass or the Eucharist (necessities excepted). There are times where I wonder if some “Catholics” would be surprised to find out that the Eucharist is the actual body of Christ.
