Given the amount of arbitrary Old Testament (Deuteronomy seems to be especially popular) quoting to prove random points on this forum by Catholics, I can actually understand why those who hate the Church do what you describe - it’s the same arbitrary use of the texts, just with the opposite intention.

That said, they’re wrong. Such use of the Old Testament is not how the Church reads the Bible. But when even Catholics do it, I’m not surprised anti-Catholics do.

by quoting excerpts from the Old Testament to try and make a point?

Why dont they also paint Jews as hateful? They believe solely in the Old Testament but purposeully leave them out and only attack the RCC with it?. Is it because Jews are also a minority group that the people with an agenda to fill (the supposed victims) run the risk of being called hateful and bigoted themselves?
Man is a rational creature. If they’re not going to be a part of something that claims to be obligatory, they crave for justifications for why they are what they are, and why they aren’t what they could be. That means hunting & gathering for grievances, sometimes to the point of deep hostility.

Judaism is small, and it does not have the passionate evangelization history that Christianity does. Islam & Christianity are the two most provocative faiths. Though their theologies differ greatly, they’re both on a mission of total conquest in some form or another.
