The same one you read. The one that says to keep all the traditions you have received and that which you have heard. The one that was compiled by the Catholic Church and translated from the original texts, and responsibly maintained traditional language rather than deforming the original meanings and making them bland. The one that does not buy into novelties to try to stay “fresh”. The Church of All Time that need not change to accomodate the generations and ebb and flow of the world, because She serves God who is Eternal, and not the world. The very un-worldly, spiritual Church in direct contradiction to the very worldly, pop-psychology Protestant churches that hate Her oh-so–very-much.
BRAVO!! :clapping:

What altar? The stage?

Altar: “a table or flat-topped block used as the focus for a religious ritual, esp. for making sacrifices or offerings to a deity.”

As with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

Thank you Rsambo. :o

Is their anything in the bible that justifies the way a priest should dress? Where did they come up with the idea to dress the way they dress? And why does the pope carry a staff? Where in the bible does it give instructions on how a preist should dress?
Here’s a little bit on the “staff”:newadvent.org/cathen/04515c.htm

They dress the way they do…so as to show to everyone who they are. It is a simple and un-ostentatious garb. The white collar is known as a “roman collar”.
I have read the Old Testament and got a picture of how the high priests were ordered to dress back then. Why don’t priests dress like those high priests then like Aaron?
Good question…here are some answers for you: newadvent.org/summa/5040.htm

I am guessing that you are referring to the Vestments that a Priest wears while saying the Mass? The link above explains how it all applies to all Priests, Bishops, etc…

I’m going to keep pushing it. Why is there a so-called “altar” at a Protestant church? Where did they get this idea of an altar from? Pastor?

OK. How are these verses not about having the pastor and elders pray for somebody?
You missed the point.
My point, exactly.
No it wasn’t.
Oh yes it was… and to say otherwise is to deny facts. Altar calls are a 19th century evangelist’s invention. That’s all, ergo its a man-made tradition.
Don’t care.
And therein resides your problem…and you claiming to be a man of the “cloth”.
Read it again. It is not the altar call he is saying is Unbiblical, but the way some in the church are manipulating people using altar calls.
Uh, you might want to re-read all of those links and come to some consensus other than your own opinion… and try to be a little more honest with us as well as yourself. There is nothing “Biblical” about an altar call… just yours and some others “personal interpretation” of a snippet of Scripture taken out of context. Jim, the Bible is an ALL or NONE deal…and its not like going to Burger King…where you can have it “your way”.

And therein resides your problem…and you claiming to be a man of the “cloth”.
No, I never used such silly titles. I picked cotton when I was a child. That’s about as close as I’ve ever come to being “a man of cloth”.

Of course. I should come to your opinion. Or, more to the point, the opinion your church tells you that you should have.
There is nothing “Biblical” about an altar call
And I just showed you scripture that demonstrates that having the pastor and elders pray for you is Biblical.

I don’t know of any Protestant churches that have an altar.

Are you referring to the dress they wear for the liturgy or the dress they wear on the street?

I don’t know of any Protestant churches that have an altar.
Then what in the world is an “altar call”? How in the world do they call you up to something they - don’t have?
Of course. I should come to your opinion. Or, more to the point, the opinion your church tells you that you should have.
Yes, we should keep all that which we have been taught by the Apostles, and maintain fidelity the “pillar and foundation of truth.” (FYI, that verse isn’t talking about the Bible)
And I just showed you scripture that demonstrates that having the pastor and elders pray for you is Biblical.
Indeed, you’ve showed us just how Biblical of the Catholic Church it is to send in the priests and Bishops to pray for us, and anoint us with oil when we are sick, and to forgive us our sins. Thank you for confirming how Biblical Catholics are.

Here’s where it came from…though “some” deny it:

**Where Did It Come From?

What is often shocking to many who use the modern invitation system is that the altar call is just that modern. The practice, although widespread, is a very new phenomenon in the Christian church. For nearly nineteen centuries no one had ever heard of the practice. Such well known evangelists as George Whitefield, Jonathan Edwards, and even John Wesley had never even heard of such a custom. And Charles Spurgeon, that passionate winner of souls par excellence, although well acquainted with the practice, firmly refused to adopt it and even criticized it severely.**

The writer is apparently a Baptist Minister… so I think he would have a pretty good grip on the subject.

A non-Catholic made a statement no long ago here in these forums…and I choose to reiterate it here and now… If it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck…it is a duck! Altar calls a man-made modern tradition born of people who routinely decry the Catholics of their “man-made traditions”… Ewww, the malodorous fumes of hypocrisy are thickening!

If the Bible agrees with the Catholics - drop the sola scriptura and contradict it, but never, ever, ever recognize the Catholics!

I see that you can’t grasp the “colloquialism”…or does that mean that the self-professed honorific of “Pastor” is one that you just hung on yourself for the fun of it?
Of course. I should come to your opinion. Or, more to the point, the opinion your church tells you that you should have.
I’m well imaging your grip on this issue is slipping mightily…you are beginning to slip into that dark hole. Not one of those links is of my opinion, nor that of any Catholic Church that I know of. Each and every one of those articles was written by “Protestants” of varying denominations.

Jim, it appears that you are overly-steeped in incorrect teaching. I am not told by my Church “what to think”. I am a 58 year old man who has possessed “free will” all of my life and have functioned quite independently throughout my life. I am a Catholic, but I am not an automaton. Your image of Catholics is false, so it might well do you to reassess your opinions.
And I just showed you scripture that demonstrates that having the pastor and elders pray for you is Biblical.
Thanks, but we already knew that. 🙂

I have been told that Jan Crouch dresses in front of the camera the way she does as a disguise so that when she goes out in public, like to the grocery store, no one will recognize her, as she doesn’t dress in public the same way she dresses in front of the camera. I don’t know if it’s true, but it’s plausible. As for the diamonds on her neck, they may be fake for all we know. Who are we to judge her? Is it not true that TBN gave Mother Angelica her TV start, and from her program on TBN EWTN got started? If so, then Catholics should be thankful for Jan Crouch. As for why do priests dress the way they do, I heard on Catholic radio a priest answer the question. I don’t remember his full answer, but the black symbolized the vow of poverty that priests are under. The cussack is what people wore in the early days of the Church, but as garment fashions changed, the priests retained the original style of dress. As for altars in Protestant Churches, I haven’t seen any in the Churches I frequent in a long long time. I guess they get in the way of people falling slain in the Spirit and dancing in the Spirit.

Say it isn’t so, Brother!! I am ever amazed at the number of people who will actually make ludicrous statements claiming that the Catholic Church is “un-Biblical”… and yet when they have it proven to them or they find out the truth for themselves…they get a near terminal case of brain-lock similar to “lock-jaw”. Its too bad a tetanus shot won’t cure them!! 😃

And I just showed you scripture that demonstrates that having the pastor and elders pray for you is Biblical.
As a pastor, do you hear confessions (or make confessions to one another) as it counsels in that passage from James?

Not being confrontational here; I know nondenominational Christians who DO confess to their pastor.

Is it not true that TBN gave Mother Angelica her TV start, and from her program on TBN EWTN got started?.
I think maybe not…not in reality. Mother Angelica had already gotten a start…but in the following link, its a history of EWTN from a writer at the National Review. In the middle of the article it tells of the issue, and why she did not continue taping on the “local tv station”…though she did tape some programs for Pat Robertson’s network.

nationalreview.com/nr_comment/nr_comment081501a.shtml

Frankly, I think if for no other reason that sheer determination and old fashioned “grit” Mother Angelica would have succeeded!!

a little note:
back in my country, my priest got all wet after celebrating a mass. He wore layers after layers of clothes and the church had no AC. All we had was a big fan and sometimes we had no electricity.

Seriously? You don’t see any reference in the Bible to preaching the Gospel, giving people an opportunity to ask for prayer, or singing “psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs” in the Bible? What Bible are you reading???
UUUmm! is it a Catholic bible? Ephesians 5:18
but be filled with the Spirit,
19
addressing one another (in) psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and playing to the Lord in your hearts,
20
giving thanks always and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God the Father.

Wikipedia has info on Mother Angelica’s start, for those interested. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EWTN
According to it, the CBS affiliate WIAT in Birmingham, Ala. taped videos of her and they were played on both CBN (Pat Robertson) and TBN. From what I’ve read about her, I do believe she could have done it without any of them…
