Why do Priests wear black?

Perhaps priests wear black for the same reason many of us ladies wear it - it’s slimming

So true. I saw the assistant in my parish the other day all dressed up in black and I almost passed out from shock!

That thought had occured to me, but in the interests of the fact that by baptism we are all Christian regardless of denomination, I declined to comment, but seeing as you have, then why do Protestant ministers wear this? Possibly a Protestant brother or sister can explain this to me, is it because there is still valid succession in orders in Protestantism, some Anglican/Protestant Priests when they convert to Catholicism do not need to renew their Holy Orders.

I wish all our priests wore the cassock. Of course, here (Las Vegas) they’d have to wear a white one, as I believe the priests in India and other hot climates do. They’d die in the Vegas heat otherwise.

If you like. But these are pious explainations attached to the dress long after it become standard and customary.

The Roman Collar was the fashion style of Rome, as opposed to the English collar (which it is a misname to call the Anglican collar, as it is simply a style of clergy in the English speaking word regardless of denomination).

Again, the cassock is the same garment as the academic gown and the judicial robe.
