Why do Protestant Apologists feel the need to lie about history and the Catholic Church?

There are countless anti-Catholic websites on the net, all of which contain nothing but lies against the RCC. They do this by grossly misrepresenting Catholic Doctrine, or by simply making up their own history; a history that conflicts with all modern historical evidence. These lies have obviously disseminated throughout the Protestant laity; however I’m not blaming them, they are the product of a 500 year propaganda campaign. Why is there this culture of misinformation among Protestantism?

I think similar things can be said of any apologist. There are good and bad Protestant apologists and good and bad Catholic apologists.

I am yet to find even one anti-Protestant site that attempts to misrepresent history or Protestant beliefs.

I can think of many common misrepresentations.

That no one ever said anything like sola scrpitura before the Reformation. There are church fathers who stated the essence of sola scriprura, even if they may not have been consistent in what they said. Not to mention the Waldenses, Hus or Wyclife

That once saved always saved means that you can sin all you want.

That Protestantism started because Henry VIII wanted a divorce. That may have been the start of Anglicanism but not Protestantism.

That the Catholic Church was the only church for the first 1500 years. (You see that all the time on these boards.) But that ignores the Orthodox Church, the Coptic Church the Assyrian Church, and the Waldenses to name a few. I could go on but must be off to bed.

Not that I doubt your sincerity, but i have never seen an apologist assert these things. Perhaps there are members of the laity that believe such things; but that’s not what Im talking about. I’m referring to a concerted effort on the part of those who claim knowledge or authority to slander the Church through lies.

Heres a VERY small selection of examples

jesus-is-lord.com/cath.htm
landoverbaptist.org/sermons/dangcatholics.html

As I said, I am yet to encounter a Catholic site that slanders Protestantism in this manner.

I clicked on that second link, nearly laughed at the look on deacon fred’s face (looks as if he is mentally retarded), then read the sermon…is he really this stupid? He quotes pharisees attempting to bash JESVS to show how (as he calls them) “old men who like to play with little boys’ penises” cannot forgive sins.

Is this website a hoax? or is deacon fred really just this stupid?

You’re exactly right. There’s two options; he is actually mentally retarded, or he is spreading lies about the RCC. I doubt that any church would allow a man with a mental disability to represent them; that leaves only one possibility…

Because if you are a protestant, your only options are:
you can either refuse to think at all, and say “whatever anyone believes doesn’t matter because all truth is relative and subjective and there’s no such thing as objective truth”.

Or if you actually believe in protestantism and want to justify your belief, you must assert that the 16th century founders of protestantism were justified in splitting off from the Church Christ founded because it had become irreformably evil and was teaching false doctrines (even though this would mean Christ lied).

Or a third option chosen by some especially wacky protestants is to assert that Christ actually founded a protestant church (one’s own denomination of course) which remained “hidden” for 1500+ years, and that what appeared to be the Church during all that time was actually a false “church” set up by the devil to mislead people.

A check on those so-called quotes will also note that the same Fathers plead about Tradition as well, so no–they never were shackled to sola scriptura.
That once saved always saved means that you can sin all you want.
I would probably agree with you if not for the fact that I have heard a minister actually affirm this; it’s also not once in discussions online that there are Protestants who also subscribe to this.

That Protestantism started because Henry VIII wanted a divorce. That may have been the start of Anglicanism but not Protestantism.

There something to note here, and that for 1500 years it is the only Western Church. Some do not make it precisely clear, though that I think is their point.

To bring this more to the issue, if Protestants would agree that the Catholic Church has it all right, that would in essence make Protestantism illegitimate. In order to legitimize itself then, they need to make the assertion that the Catholic Church isn’t true, so they make up these claims, even if it could not be backed up historically. Still, it will somehow persist since to say otherwise would mean there is no basis for Protestantism to start with.

I believe most of your Protestants don’t read church history at all. If they would study church history they would cease being Protestant. That is if they have a open heart. A friend of mine said that the only way some people come to the Catholic Church is through the Holy Spirit.

You have no idea on how much on the “wacky fringe” these sites are do you.
Wacky? Are you kidding? These sites are nothing out of the ordinary. If you know of a site that points out the “errors” of Catholicism without resorting to a misrepresentation of facts then I would be very interested in seeing it.

I second that…better yet, if you find one that truthfully says the CC is wrong I’ll leave Catholicism right now and join THAT denomination.

Umm…if you actually take the time to look at “jesus-is-savior.com” you will find that they also believe that our government was behind 9-11 (not the islamic terrorists).

Anyone who believes that is wacky in my book. But then again that belief may not be wacky to you. To each his own I guess.

If this is the case than it should be VERY easy to find the website that fulfills the second part of his question. The terms ‘fringe’ and ‘wacko’ seem to say that they are the minority or exception to the rule. That being said, where are the logical, sane majority? They should surely overwhelm the ‘fringe’ by shear numbers, if not by strong arguments, but they are as elusive as dark matter.

I stand by my offer. Make a Protestant out of me.

If you will note I did not say that the fathers were consistent although I think it is open to discussion as to what they meant by tradition. Neverthesless they did say the things supportive of scripture alone and, if they were inconsistent, we cannot know what they actually thought.
