Why do protestants believe this?

As I recall, in the first Protestants needed an authority for the composition of the Bible. Rejecting the Catholic Church they turned to the Jewish authorities for an official Old Testament. They may not have realized that the Jews did not have a single official canon of Scripture until late in the 1st century.

Of course they did accept the New Testament which the Jews rejected.

I find it much more effective to just recommend them to read Luthers works for themselves and if they have an open heart they will see the how there is nothing saintly about his writings.

Hi, I’m just jumping in on this thread here at the end so not sure what’s been discussed, but this is very ironic. I’ve never read any of Luther’s writings except his 95 thesis . I was raised Protestant/Evangelical/Baptist and the past year have been heading towards RC. I’m in RCIA. Anyway, I’m still really torn back and forth seeing both sides to the apologetics/arguments, but I just wanted to comment about Luther’s writings.

Today, for the first time, I was at a Lutheran church library (my daughter’s preschool), and decided to look at Luther’s book they had. I brought one home and was quite shocked at his language/way of talking. Not profanity, but just rude, talking about the Pope being a fart over and over, and things I felt bad even reading. I understand that he felt the need to insult them because he thought they were of the devil, but normally a man of God doesn’t use crass talk when trying to defend his point. I don’t know.

I used to think of Luther as such a saint, saving Christ’s people from the hands of power hungry Popes’ control, but it is interesting reading his stuff. Makes me wonder what the RC side says about that whole situation. The movie “Luther” sure made the RCC look bad and him look good/like a savior.

First of all, if anybody wants Luther bashed, I will be happy to oblige.

Yes, he did have a vile potty mouth, and he was a vicious anti-semite.
And before anyone new to these parts starts in, let me mention that I am the Friendly Neighborhood Methodist. Don’t blame the Catholics for my opinions on ML; they were well and truly formed long before I came to CAF. (Actually, before there was such a thing as CAF…)
