Hi Brian,
Thanks for the perceptive insight.
Your answer seems to beg a follow-up question.
Ought there to be more than one way of understanding the bible? Certainly, how it applies to ones current circumstances seems reasonable; but ought there to be also ONE common, acceptable by everyone understanding?
Is that not what the authors had in mind?
Love and prayers,
Pat
1 Corinthians 14
33For God is not a God of disorder but of peace.
We should all have the same faith and I think for the most part we do.
I have been pondering this thought-
the Holy Bible is straight forward and should not need the Holy Spirit to interprete it.
Has man thinking the Holy Spirit is leading them gone astray = non-trinitarians.
Is it the Holy Spirit that actually leads us to the **application **of a verse? So
we become the different parts of the Body of Christ?
Example-
This came up for me while talking to Muslims,
they are really big into marrying very, very young girls- they were saying that the Holy Bible said nothing about when a girl/woman can be married and that Jews were marrying girls at a very young age. Well first off they don’t understand engagement/marriage promises and then marriage customs. Anyway I said yes there is!
This is about the relationship of Israel with GOD:
Ezekiel 16
1 The word of the LORD came to me: 2 "Son of man, confront Jerusalem with her detestable practices 3 and say, 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says to Jerusalem: Your ancestry and birth were in the land of the Canaanites; your father was an Amorite and your mother a Hittite. 4 On the day you were born your cord was not cut, nor were you washed with water to make you clean, nor were you rubbed with salt or wrapped in cloths. 5 No one looked on you with pity or had compassion enough to do any of these things for you. Rather, you were thrown out into the open field, for on the day you were born you were despised.
6 " 'Then I passed by and saw you kicking about in your blood, and as you lay there in your blood I said to you, “Live!” 7 I made you grow like a plant of the field. You grew up and developed and became the most beautiful of jewels. Your breasts were formed and your hair grew, you who were naked and bare.
8 " 'Later I passed by, and when I looked at you and saw that you were old enough for love, I spread the corner of my garment over you and covered your nakedness. I gave you my solemn oath and entered into a covenant with you, declares the Sovereign LORD, and you became mine.
BUT see what is tucked into the story - when a woman is old enough for love! After *“Your breasts were formed and your hair grew, you who were naked and bare.” *
After puberty!
I would never have see that other, separate application if it wasn’t for the Holy Spirit!
I was able to go back to the muslims and tell them - GOD does have a time when it is appropriate for women/girls to be married/loved!
It is the Holy Spirit that makes the Word of GOD living- as useful today as it was back when written.
