Reminds me of an exchange I had on a board I can’t recall. The topic devolved into whether a Roman Catholic could write science fiction (don’t ask). I got involved with (apparently) an odd woman who maintained that it was impossible for a faithful RC to do so. I ran my list of great SF writers who were RC, and specific works. Was met by surreal responses. Plowed on, anyway.

Never guessed it was a put-on, until the author revealed it.

But, all the same, the author knew little of science fiction.

You don’t have to guess. Edwin couldn’t answer them, I’m almost certain. I could because the subject is one of my hobbies. Like Chesterton, and WWII history (certain topics therein), and about 12-15 other areas that I collect books in. Lots of books. It makes me what you can call informed. And it makes for a deeper historical conversation. You know, being deep in history, and all that.

What you may or may not know about Anglicanism will remain a mystery. Unless you really want to talk, some day.

objectively, none of these qualities are a part of the episcopalianism but are in a large part diametrically opposed to ethos of this sect.

Are you serious? If the Baptists down the street decided to name their church after a saint, how in the world does it trivialize either the Catholic Church or the saint. The Catholic Saints are not the personal, private property of the Church, licensed only for use by card-carrying Catholics! Their message is the Gospel message of Jesus Christ. Their lives are examples to the entire world – not just the Christian world, but the whole world, from here to China and back.

Don’t be stingy. We are to be a light to the world. If some of our light has shed a ray of truth of people who do not yet understand the whole package, why gripe at them for what they DO appreciate and understand.

If a Catholic Saint has done something to merit the admiration of other Christians, to the extent that they name a church after him, then we should rejoice.

OTOH, it is certain that in England, where the Reformation left a lot of churches named after Saints quite intact, there was no felt need to change the name after the break with Rome. When you have all this fantastic real estate, and the name of your patron is carved in stone all over the building, you think twice before you mess it up. Unless you are Cromwell, of course.
