Why do Protestants reject the Pope's authority?

When Jesus gives Peter the keys to his church he quotes Isaiah 22 when speaking to Peter. The Papacy makes complete sense on so many levels. Jesus, the King is not humanly present on earth so he gives the keys to his Church to someone in his place acting as his Prime Minister until he returns so there isn’t chaos where people believe all different things. God creates order not disorder and confusion that is a fact. The fact that the Church has lasted for 2000 years and we celebrate the Eucharist the same way as the Apostles and Jesus’ disciples did has to mean something and say something about the Catholic Church. We also have a system where we replace one Pope with another Pope rather easily has to also be considered. The fact the Church is both horizontal and vertical is a testament to is divine nature. We also have to consider the role the Eucharist plays. Jesus our King, is keeping us close to him and in his Church by the frequent reception of the Eucharist. The unity of the Church is maintained by Jesus himself present in the Eucharist. Jesus also sent the Holy Spirit to guide us on Pentacost and it has been with us ever since that is why the doctrine has never been wrong.

Oh good. A guessing game! šŸæ

Jewish?
😃 No guessing game. I am a believer in Yeshua the Messiah and am a sabbath keeping believer. I think G-d instituted the holy days for a reason, and I study those as well.

Let’s see, if I were Jewish, I guess you would call me a Messianic Jew.
I’m that, except I’m not Jewish. Does that help?
Sorry, I can’t explain it much better than that.

Then what are they dependent upon?

That is you opinion, and you’re welcome to it.
In doing the historical research of popes throughout history, the authority exercised was in no way led by the Holy Spirit therefore I do not recognize him as an authoritative figure.
Do you know what happens on the first day of the conclave that elects the Pope in Pauline Chapel before they go into the Sistine Chapel to start the vote?

Jesus commissioned the Apostles to ā€œgo, therefore, and make disciples of all nations. Baptize them in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Teach them to carry out everything I have commanded youā€ (Mt.28: 19-20). He promised that the Holy Spirit would ā€œinstruct you in everything and remind you of all that I have told youā€ (John 14:26). Just before his ascension into heaven Jesus said, ā€œGo into all the world and preach the gospel to the whole creationā€ (Mk 16: 15). He commanded them to do precisely what He himself had done, namely, deliver the Word of God to the people by the living voice and granted them, through the Holy Spirit, the gift of tongues. He told them, ā€œHe who hears you hears me and he who rejects you rejects me, and he who rejects me rejects Him who sent me.ā€ (Luke 10:16)

Yes, they go to mass, sing, pray for the Holy Spirits leading and I think that’s all marvelous.
However, the pope is a sinner just like everyone else and is not immune from the temptations that go along with an office of power and prestige. A little research into papal history will reveal there were some very dark popes along the way.
I’m sure Jesus prayed before choosing the apostles also.

And these verses don’t apply to you?

And every single word Jesus’ or the Apostles said applies to everyone?
No. Only those called to follow Him.
Do you know anybody that does not need to hear the gospel and be baptized?
I don’t. So why would I wait for somebody else to tell them?

Is there any particular reason why you find it necessary to be rude?
You however find nothing rude about insulting the leaders of the Church without any logical or theological reason. You are a sinner but you guide yourself in your faith…trusting your own judgement. But another sinner who happens to lead our Church cannot possibly be led by the Holy Spirit…because YOU say so. The Holy Spirit is present and active in our Church with or without your opinion. Several posters here have asked you great questions about your position and you have ignored them…there are many ways to be rude…maybe you have found another one. 🤷

Sorry, but you are wrong, no offense. Many verses in the Bible Jesus’ or Paul spoke specifically to an individual (i.e, Jesus to Peter, Paul to Timothy or Titus).

Sorry, but that is not the same when one person is speaking directy to another person. We are all called to hear and teach the Good News;however, it is not the same as one person speaking to directly to another. Not every word in the Bible is applicable to every Joe and Jane.
So why would I wait for somebody else to tell them?
As stated, two entire different issues when Jesus spoke and taught to the general public and to a specific individual.

Unfortunately no, the practice continued for almost 400 years. It took the secular world to end it, but when the papal states regained power, they re-established it.
And whether you label this document ex-cathedra or not matters little since the Jews were subject to the proclamation with no recourse.

Now compare the situation between the papacy and the Jews.

This is where the pope resided. (note the comment about the Tiber river)
Quirinal Palace
The palace, located on the Via del Quirinale and facing onto the Piazza del Quirinale, was built in 1583 by Pope Gregory XIII as a papal summer residence. The pope wanted to find a location which would have been far away from the humidity and stench coming from the river Tiber and the unhealthy conditions of the Lateran Palace, therefore the Quirinal hill was one of the most suitable places in Rome.

And this is where the Jews were forced to reside:
The Roman Ghetto was established as a result of Papal bull Cum nimis absurdum, promulgated by Pope Paul IV on 14 July 1555. The bull also required the Jews of Rome, which had existed as a community since before Christian times and which numbered about 2,000 at the time, to live in the ghetto. The ghetto was a walled quarter with three gates that were locked at night. The wall was built under the direction of the architect Giovanni Sallustio Peruzzi. The money for its construction – 300 scudi – had to be paid by the Jewish community. The area of Rome chosen for the ghetto was the most undesirable quarter of the city, subject to constant flooding by the Tiber River. At the time of its founding, the four-block area was expected to contain roughly 1,000 inhabitants.

Now, as an outsider observing the actions of the pope(s) and knowing that G-d stated that the Jews were His chosen people, not to mention ā€œlove your neighbor as yourselfā€-
why would I believe that the pope is a representative of G-d?
and
why, (if I were a Jew) would I think Jesus Christ was the Messiah?

Agreed. So when Jesus says, ā€œfollow Meā€ does that apply to you or not?

Of course. Who practices what they don’t believe?
Am I perfect at it, no. But I’m not telling a billion people what to do either.
You are your own pope. You rely upon yourself in order to determine what is truth and what is not. Good luck with that.

No I rely on what Jesus said.

ā€œSo I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. 11 If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? 13 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children,** how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit** to those who ask Him!ā€

But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.

Either these words are true or Jesus is a phony. There is no in between.
Now there was a time in history when people did need to be taught the scriptures because most of them couldn’t read, and nobody owned a Bible. But today you have access to everything the pope has access to, including the Holy Spirit.

Just out of curiosity, is anybody familiar with the prophecy of the popes?

Take it with a grain of salt, but I thought it was a bit interesting.

Saint Malachy

But today you have access to everything the pope has access to…
I assure you no one here has ā€œaccess to everything the pope has access to.ā€ Even the CIA would like access to some of the things the Pope has access to.
