Good question…and I’ve often asked myself about that very thing. My answer to myself is that there is more than one way to do things… Some more polite and subtle than others. How do you reconcile that with the Great Commission, or the extensive missionary efforts of the early apostles?
Oh, don’t get me wrong… I am not at all incline to oppose God in any way. But there are ways to preach the gospel, and then there are ways to preach the gospel… I believe there is a famous Catholic Cardinal…who said something about spreading the gospel and sometimes even using words. It is only through the Holy Spirit that we can know God, that is true, but God has instructed us to go into the world and preach the gospel: who am I to oppose Him?
I won’t disagree, but I will say that I wish there was some way to let those doing it “wrongly” should desist and get it right before trying again. I have met very earnest people honestly trying to “preach”…but their way of doing it shuts people down, and causes more damage than good.Of course, there are certainly ways that we can try to spread the gospel which do more harm than good (sometimes we are all too quick to forgot o speak the truth in love). However, that fact that it can be done wrongly isn’t license to avoid doing it at all.
I prefer a more subtle and kindhearted approach…which is somewhat contra-indicative of my general personality…
