Why do scientists want to prove we are an accident?

The atheist sees no evidence whatever because he has closed both his mind and his heart to the revelation. The atheist not only does not desire to know God, he desires **not **to know God.
Some atheists seems to have no fundamental reasons for their atheism other than maybe their resentment of an imagined grievance of some sort toward God. They seem to be for the most part almost bitterly antagonistic to God, perhaps out of fear that God just might shine His good light upon their sins and change them.
 
If we pretend that science is the way to go about all matters knowable in the universe, then that saves us the headache of good vs. evil, personal responsibility, etc. Many atheists choose to be good people, even though their belief structure has no pressing reason for doing so. If we are accidents, I have no reason to care about the survival of the earth or the human race beyond my lifetime. Again, many atheists do, but they have no real reason to do so.

If we believe we are purposeless, then that saves us from having to face the question, “Why are we here?”

And some Christians have an imagined grievance toward Thor, are bitterly antagonistic to Apollo and quake in fear that Aphrodite might shine her light on them and change them. :rolleyes:

:confused: Scientists methodically observe and measure, and they form and then test hypotheses against empirical evidence. They’re not in the proving game.

The Elephant analogy, mentioned by Hecd, shows it up. We can sense, delect, measure what an elephant is, how it reacts etc. in an endless number of ways, all pointing at what can be considered elephantness. If you were to bounce giant size laser beams at an elephant, it would tell you little of about it’s bowel movements…
 
I really don’t understand what you’re talking about here, or what your point now is. Spectroscopy is useful across the electromagnetic spectrum - not just in the visual. Are you saying that gamma ray data doesn’t tell us anything about cosmic events?

I’m saying that Gamma Ray data is just that. I’d suggest it gives us many clues, and tells us quite a bit about cosmic events, but, as with much evidence and our interpretation of it, I suspect any claim that we know for sure what it’s telling us, or even to whatever % degree of certainty… with this one, you’ve got visual, and figured out that the elephant appears to have 4 humors, just like a chimpanzee 😉
 
Not really. Hippocratic medicine was neither based on the scientific method, nor, unless you can show to the contrary, particularly efficacious - at least not compared to modern medicine based on a real knowledge of anatomy, physiology, microbiology and chemistry. Whereas an extremely detailed and correct knowledge of the behaviour of electrons in a wide range of conditions, including their rather counter-intuitive quantum behaviour is required to design and build computer chips. If you think we can do that without understanding the existence and behaviour of electrons to an exquisite degree of precision, then you don’t really know what’s involved in designing and making a chip. To compare that knowledge with the Hippocratic theory of medicine is, frankly, absurd.

All very well blaming it on the ancient Greeks, but humorism survived the enlightenment and into the heart of the super-rationalist 19th century. The Scientific Method did not contradict the theory of the humors - if anything, I suspect it supported it… why not? Until a more effective theory appears, with nothing to top it, the 4 humor theory was doubtless known to be validated 😉

Many scientists are religious; but I suppose you to mean anti-religious scientists.
They possibly, if they think about it at all, wish to convince themselves and others that they are just an accident because of the sense of freedom they believe they will have if they can actually finally prove that fact scientifically.
Desiring freedom was the downfall of Adam and Eve; and Martin Luther described ‘…his great sense of freedom now that he knows for sure that the Pope is the Anti-Christ.’
Of course this must be a false sense of freedom as it allows for the production of victims for-their-own-good.
I suppose that once finally proven free, our anti-religious scientist thinks he/she will feel the freedom to act without limitation from culture, tradition, or superstition. Even now I hear things like, the cure for famine in African countries is not to help them stabilize their political structures - but rather to physically stop them having families.
Or, ‘…we need to reduce the population of Earth by two-thirds’.
I hear anti-religious voices attack religion by attacking the old adaption institutions run by religious accusing them of withholding the identities of children and natural parents from each other. Those institutes should not withhold that information but at least the religious made sure that they kept a record of what children belonged to whom. But these same attacking voices I have never heard attacking the modern science of producing and storing children anonymously. How many thousands of frozen children will never know where they came from through this scientific advance, will pairs of cousins and siblings meet in the future and marry, not knowing who each other are, and be disappointed when genetics destroys the health of their children. Freedom must be a trap in insanity if there really is no objective Truth. But then, how could a coherent Universe be born of a Lie or a Half-Truth. An accidental Universe is a greater miracle than an Intended Universe.:hmmm:

Not sure why you’d think there’s an all or nothing approach, or what scientific conventions you’re referring to. All I can suggest to help is give up your computer, TV, cell phone, fridge, automobile. No longer take antibiotics or any other scientific health care. You’ll be bored, unhealthy and ignorant, but at least you won’t be worrying no more. 😃

If you give me something resembling a reason to do so, I will, but you just seem to expect me to deny myself because of, what, a lack of faith? Perhaps there’s a scientismic version of confession where I can admit my skepticism, and be again allowed communion with what I subsequently deny are technological devices we don’t neccesarily understand every iota of the physical ins and outs of to the nth degree?

Why faith? Your computer contains chips that could only be designed and fabricated with a detailed knowledge. The fact it works shows we possess the knowledge and that the knowledge is correct. You know this with a huge degree of certainty, no faith required. But sure there are limits to knowledge, probably always will be, no argument there.

Well yes, a coin has both heads and tails, God is both creator and father, so what? Natural science is deliriously happy to leave room for doubt and alternatives when it might be wrong and new evidence could be found tomorrow. This is the reverse of much of theology and philosophy where proofs and absolute certainties are often de rigueur.

Often, at best, all that can be determined is that one treatment appears more effective than another, and why it might work is left for later since these are matters of life and death. But a computer chip either works or it doesn’t, it’s yes or no, and it can only be yes if the designer knows exactly what she’s doing.

At least we can test which bits exist with medicine using more methods than 1! Computers may be digital, but why should that matter to electrons? 😛

A funny thing, the digital vs analogue idea, and another one example among heaps which shows how the truth changes as science ‘changes it’s mind’. When CDs were huge, I remember the argument that digital gave more effective coverage of the range of sounds we could hear, and the missing elements covered by analogue were inaudible to the human ear. 20 years later, and there have been moves towards Hi-definition sound… thing is, this means that it is now determined that CD quality digital reproduction presumably is now held *not * to give us full coverage of what can be heard, thus making it inferior to the ‘antiquated’ analogue… poof reality changes again! Luckily, technology is keeping pace with the latest discovery that sound reproduction was more effective in delivering a full range 30 years ago than 20 years ago… :rolleyes:
