Why do so many "discussions" turn divisive?

Okay, that’s interesting. It would never have occurred to me that “Norvus Ordo Mass” or “NO Mass” would be offensive. Why is it rude?
You honestly have to ask why “NO Mass” is considered rude by many Catholics? Really?

Novus Ordo means new order. The “Pauline” Mass is certainly a new order of the Mass after how many years of the EF or Traditional Latin Mass. However, if one is to use NO Mass, I can certainly see writing it this way - N. O. Mass - with the periods.

Pope Benedict XVI formally calls the two main Masses of the Latin Rite the Ordinary Form of the Mass and the Extraordinary Form of the Mass.
And as Cardinal he said this
"What happened after the Council was totally different: in the place of liturgy as the fruit of development came fabricated liturgy.
We left the living process of growth and development to enter the realm of fabrication. There was no longer a desire to continue developing and maturing, as the centuries passed and so this was replaced - as if it were a technical production - with a construction, a banal on-the-spot product.
And Pope Paul VI called the NO “Novus Ordo”.

There you go…

That’s precisely the sort of response I was talking about. The official name of the Mass is the Mass of Pope Paul VI. Try as you may you cannot prove differently. Our current Pope calls it the Ordinary Form of the Mass. “Novus Ordo” or “NO” is not the name of the Mass – go check the current Roman Missal. Yet some ignore the Missal and the current Pope in order to take that little shot at what they do not like. It’s sickening.

Simply put there is no way that one could not see how typing “NO Mass” would be offensive to other Catholics. Absolutely no way. Yet they continue – because it makes them feel good to take that little shot at what they personally do not like. Again, it’s sickening.

To the OP, that’s “Why do so many “discussions” turn divisive.”
NO Mass.

“NO Mass” is beyond good manners. It just should not be used. I’ve heard it in public and some have become agitated when I made believe I didn’t hear them.

“Novus Ordo” is simply not accurate – or certainly not as accurate as the actual names given to the OF. Why not simply try to type “OF” or “Pauline” Mass. Simple, far more accurate and not offensive in the least.
It’s been called the NO Mass for about 40 years.

And by Pope Paul VI himself. He promulgated it.

Any biases you see in the name “NO Mass” are simply projected by yourself.

I hope I’m not jumping into a pit of snakes here . . .

It seems to me that there is something fundamentally wrong on this forum when a serious thread about divisiveness on these boards turns into a petty squabble about whether to refer to the Mass of Paul VI as “NO mass”, “Novus Ordo Mass”, “Ordinary Form”, or “OF”. I think that is exactly what the OP was talking about! So many diatribes on these boards can be boiled down to arguments over semantics and people taking offense to things that probably ought not to be offensive in the first place.

There are Catholics in the world right now who are being persecuted for their faith. Modern-day martyrs going to the Father because of their faith. Somehow, I don’t think they care whether you call it “OF” or “NO mass” – it is still worship of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, in accordance with what the Holy Catholic Church has taught. In many countries, particularly the US, Canada, and Europe, we have the luxury to be able to debate ideas and matters of doctrine openly. But we need to remember that we can only do that because of the blood of others.

Perhaps what we should all do next time there is something posted we take offense at is to stop and say a prayer for that person. And skip the reply button. Not always, for we still need to be vigilent and defend the faith. But at the very least, we ought not to curse each other over semantics.

Chris

PS - FWIW, here is an idea: If you choose to call it “NO mass”, through the %&#$ periods in there (N.O. mass). It takes an extra two seconds and clears up a lot.

dont worry we are not the only religion who appears to be divisive.

you have your strict Southern Baptists with your more laid back Baptist

your strict Pentecostals against the more relaxed Pentecostals.

you even have your Orthodox Jews and Conservative Jews.

there will always be your Trads and Modernists. we will always challenge one another because both parties have the most important thing in common. we want to please God as best we know how.

this shows that before we are Catholics we are human. God gave us intellect to debate, examine, and think so we could grow and love Him. i dont think of it as divisive so much as i think of it as passionate.

Was the Pauline Mass not done away with since the new 2002 missal? Was this headed “Novus Ordo?”
“OF” seems safer to me.

You honestly have to ask why “NO Mass” is considered rude by many Catholics? Really?
Yes. It was an honest question. I’m not a traditionalist; I only attend English-language Masses, and I have a fondness in my heart for folk music at Masses. It never even occurred to me until I read your post that “NO Mass” would offend anyone. That’s all I ever heard it called until I started seeing posts on CAF about Ordinary Form and Extraordinary Form; if anyone ever drew a distinction about types of Mass, I was attending the Norvus Ordo (“New Order”) Mass. And, given the omnipresence of abbreviations on the Internet, I’m not surprised to see it abbreviated.

So, yeah: I’m honestly asking you, how is the term “NO Mass” offensive?

For instance: Not using rude monikers like “NO Mass” which is so offensive to so many. 😦

With official names Mass of Pope Paul VI, Pauline Mass, Ordinary Form of the Mass and OF Mass all more accurate with zero offense there is absolutely no reason to use monikers like “Novus Ordo Mass” or even worse “NO Mass” unless one intentionally means to be offensive.

I cannot imagine anyone could actually type “NO Mass” without at least a light hint of a feeling in the backs of the minds that it will be offensive to others. They magnify that feeling many times when they proclaim that’s what the Church calls the OF Mass – when it does not. 😦
I am so sorry that I started this. Just to make sure I have this correct: the Novus Ordo Mass is the “Ordinary Form of the Mass.” Right?

Is it all right if I use the term “Tridentine Mass”?

Just so you know how innocent I was when making this error. My little mission Church celebrates the “Ordinary Form of the Mass.” As musicians in my little Church, my husband and I are learning as much Latin as possible to introduce at least some Latin to our celebration of the “Ordinary Form of the Mass”

I have only been able to be present at two “Tridentine Masses”. I found them to be as beautiful as those who love this Mass have claimed.

My point is. We must love what we love. If you love the “Ordinary Form of the Mass” work toward making it the most beautiful reverent celebration of God’s love possible. If you love the “Tridentine Mass” show forth that love and support this Mass with all your heart.

For myself, I am going to love both and when I have the opportunily I will be part of both as much as I can be. Right now my traveling is limited and I live in a small rural community and go to a small rural Church.

And I absolutely had “no” idea that NO was offensive. Mea Culpa.
As converts to the Catholic Church, I see that my husband and I have much to learn.

Yes. IMO, it’s better to use “OF” in these fora.

FWIW, personally I prefer “EF” (Extraordinary Form). Among other things, it’s simpler. 🙂

You know, I think I will not abbreviate at all. From now on I am going to make a point of writing out “Ordinary Form of the Mass” and the “Extraordinary Form of the Mass”.

This will accomplish two things.

I get to make a point. (Which is always satisfying.)

This will also show a certain reverence to both these forms. (Which I truly believe that both forms can be beautiful and should be honored)

Perhaps, but I’ve seen folks tell others they’re going to hell, I’ve seen one Catholic call another Catholic’s ideas “repellant” - passion is one thing, but rudenes is another.

Hi - frankly, I think sometimes all of us may be a bit quick to take offense. I acknowledge that there are times when I’m rather “touchy” myself.

One drawback to online discussions such as these is that there is no opportunity to use facial expressions, body language, and tone of voice to help discern if a statement is innocent or offensive. In addition, there’s no opportunity for immediate feedback. It would be nice is we would assume the best about each other. It can be a challenge sometimes, though.

Peace.
