Dearly beloved friends,
Cordial greetings and a very good day.
It has never been revealed that any particular soul is in Hell, but our Lord said respecting Judas, “Better for him had he never been born” and so we must say that it does not look too hopeful in his case, for no matter what a man has to undergo, if he attains eternal felicity in the end, then much better to have been born.
Sacred Scripture does appear to intimate that Judas would be eternally lost, for in Our Blessed Saviour’s great High Priestly Prayer, Christ says, “While I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me; I have guarded them, and none of them is lost but the son of perdition, that the Scripture might be fulfilled” (S. John 17: 12). Judas was lost by his own free-will determinedly choosing evil, notwithstanding being in Christ’s presence and hearing his holy teaching and warnings. God, Who in His omniscience, forsees all the possibile contingencies, forsaw and fortold the traitors tragic fall, and made it to serve His purposes of grace and redemption, without in the least degree, fore-ordaining it. Thus none of the apostles had perished, except the one who should perish - the one who’s very state and attribute it was to perish. The ancient Hebrew scriptures had indicated this (see Acts 1: 20), as St. Peter alleges.
Moreover, in the Book of Acts St. Peter tells us that “…Judas turned aside, to go to his own place” (Acts 1: 25). Like the other apostles he had been chosen by our Lord into one place, but had, alas, made another choice for himself, which had ended in destruction. The phrase, ‘his own place’ appears to have been early understood as refering to Hell, for St. Clement of Rome says of Peter, “Thus having borne a martry’s testimony he went to his appointed place of glory” - an expression that is evidently borrowed from Acts 1: 25.
Therefore, whilst no absolute sentence can be pronounced upon Judas, the biblical evidence, at least, does point very strongly in the direction that Judas went to Hell and that dark surmise, ‘his own place’, makes it extremely difficult for us to entertain much hope in his case.
Hope that is of some help, dear friends.
God bless.
Warmest good wishes,
