I am trying to understand WHY some people say that the only accurate Bible is the “King James Version 1611”. It seems that these believers are so entrenched with this belief that there is no room for anything other than a literal KJV only view, nothing else can be considered. Please help me understand why.

Actually alot of them have no idea what a real 1611 version is.

Today’s KJV’s are quite different from the 1611.

Do you know how they are different and are you saying that the KJV 1611, available today is different? This is a HOT topic of “discussion” at home.

First, a good way to read up on the outlandish claims of the KJV only people is to do a google search on Peter Ruckman. A side note to point out their ignorance is that they don’t practice what they preach in that they would not dream of using the “apocryphal books,” which were of course included in the 1611KJV.
I was raised in a KJV only home and attended a nominally KJV only Baptist University (I say nominally because my OT Survey professor was one of the tranlators involved in creating the NIV and while KJV only was believed by most of the faculty it was not thrust upon us by force.) I was never comfortable with towing the party line of KJV only, I don’t know why, maybe the Lord was working even then to bring me into the fulness of faith which would happen in my 30’s. I think what finally pushed me over the edge regarding the whole KJV only argument was when a group of “street corner evangelists” from Bob Jones University came to our university in Chattanooga, TN and started preaching to the STUDENTS that hey were going to hell if they did not believe KJV only. It was a pretty good indication to me that the KJV only folks had crossed that blurry line into cult. As you will see when you look up Peter Ruckman.
Don’t know if this will help but I guess I needed to vent.
Sorry and thanks.

Peace,
+Nathan

The short and simple answer is… because they are idiots !!!

Well, for one, the original 1611 had the so-called apocrypha in it. I doubt most KJV-only types would enjoy knowing that.

I don’t feel that “Idiots” is a very Christian response. The people I’ve met that are KJV onlies are extremely passionate of there belief. There study of scripture, allthough limited to KJV only, is much more impressive than my own or for that matter most of my catholic brethren.

That was a horrible thing to say, the devil made me do it.

There are many differences. First let me clarify. The vast majority of KJV bibles are not the 1611 Version. You can still get them though, I actually have a copy.

Difference in the contents:**

The original printing of the King James Version included the Apocrypha, so named in the text. It contained all the books and sections of books present in the Latin Vulgate’s Old Testament but missing in the Hebrew. Under the Thirty-Nine Articles, the doctrinal confession of the Church of England established in 1563, these books were considered non-canonical. This section also includes apocrypha from the Vulgate’s appendix. (For more information, see the article on the Biblical canon.) These texts are printed separately, between the end of the Old Testament and the beginning of the New Testament. Verses unique to the Septuagint’s version of the Book of Esther and the Book of Daniel (The Prayer of Azariah, Bel and the Dragon, Susanna) were placed here, rather than included in the texts of those books. From approximately 1827, many editions have omitted this section, and the most common contemporary editions rarely include them.

The original printing also included a number of variant readings and alternative translations of some passages; most current printings omit these. (One American edition that does still print these notes is the Cornerstone UltraThin Reference Bible, published by Broadman and Holman.) The original printing also included some marginal references to indicate where one passage of Scripture quoted or directly related to another. Most current printings omit these.

Prefatory material

The original printing contained two prefatory texts; the first was a rather fulsome Epistle Dedicatory to “the most high and mighty Prince” King James. Many British printings reproduce this, while a few cheaper or smaller American printings fail to include it.

The second, and more interesting preface was called The Translators to the Reader, a long and learned essay that defends the undertaking of the new version. It observes that their goal was not to make a bad translation good, but a good translation better, and says that “we do not deny, nay we affirm and avow, that the very meanest translation of the Bible in English, set forth by men of our profession… containeth the word of God, nay, is the word of God”. Few editions anywhere include this text.

The first printing contained a number of other apparatus, including a table for the reading of the Psalms at matins and vespers, and a calendar, an almanac, and a table of holy days and observances. Much of this material has become obsolete with the adoption of the Gregorian Calendar by the UK and its colonies in 1752 and thus modern editions invariably omit it.
**
The current text**

Current printings of the King James Bible are typically based on an edition published at Oxford University in 1769, edited by Benjamin Blayney, and contain substantially the same text, however there are a number of differences between the 1769 and the 1611. The Oxford edition applied the device of supplying italics for absent words much more thoroughly, corrected a number of minor errors in punctuation, and made the spelling more consistent and updated (that is, to the standards of the 18th century). However, in 2005, Cambridge University Press released its New Cambridge Paragraph Bible, edited by David Norton, which modernized the spelling much more thoroughly (that is, to present-day standards) and introduced quotation marks.

Hi,

I have a friend like this. Boy is she adament. She feels it is the only treu bible out there with the most accurate translation. I personally think that is what she has been taught and completely follows it. When I told her I had an NIV and NASB she cringed:eek: She told me our friendship was more important to her then fighting with me over which bible was the most accurate. I appreciated that because I wasnt going to start an argument over it anyway.😃 I have a KJV and personally I dont see a difference except the thee’s and thou’s.

Most the people I’ve met will go to the point of loosing a relationship over their beliefe in the KJV “because it says people will chastise or not like you” over your belief. This helps them feel as if they are even more correct because they are doing what the Bible says will happen.

Hi,

That is just crazy and not want God wants. You will probably find King Jamesers are also legalistic.
God wants us to have relationships inspite of our differences. That would include catholics and protestants as well.😃

Bottom line answer to OP’s question–because that is what they were taught to believe, and they have not yet come to the point where they can question those beliefs.

Hey John,
I’ve been pondering your situation and I think the first thing you might want to do is bypass the whole KJV issue. If she has bought into their views on this then chances are that she has started believing in their limited understanding of Church history. If you can get her to review church history, especially through the writings of objective non-Catholics like Justo Gonzalez, it may stir the slumbering seeds of her Catholicity and get her to re-evaluate what she has done and why she is doing it. At the very least, it will be fresh in her mind when their teachings run afoul of the truth. I think you may have a long row to hoe ahead but we will be with you. And so will He.

May the Peace of the Lord be with you always,
+Nate

There are Muslims that try to memorize the Quran word for word, but that doesn’t make the Quran any less of a lie than it is already… Not saying the KJV is a lie, but the point is just having passion for your beliefs doesn’t mean those beliefs must be credible.

I think it’s just for us English speakers. I personally like the KJV over any others. I currently have the Gideons now. But I still prefer KJV. I guess because it’s what I was brought up on.

I was trying to hold my tongue, but I have to say, you are a bad example of a Christian. I know many Christians in my life, many are my close friends and family, and if I didn’t knowany better I’d look at you and InJesus and think that all christians were like this. You need to check your self my dear brother. God is watching you and the angels are writting down ever word you say. Saying bad things about people and also having a pessimestic view on everything will get you no where.

KJV-onlyists are not idiots and they are not crazy–they are simply trying to salvage the hopeless position of *Sola Scriptura *they find themselves in. If the Bible is the final rule of faith, then it requires a completely accurate translation. One would think this would demand that only the earliest Greek copies be used for this, but you have to remember that this brand of evangelical Christianity carries with it alot of Anglo-American baggage. So English it is, with the claim that the “Authorized” version is some kind of Imprimitur from the Almighty Himself, as opposed to the mundane order of noted blowhard James I.
