Why do some bishops favor wearing their pectoral crosses outside their chasubles?

I think they just like it better that way. It’s a personal preference. Just like some stick the crucifix in the pocket of their suit, and some leave it hanging.

So why did you start a thread about it?

Personal taste issues are one thing. But you’ve accused many bishops of doing something that they shouldn’t be doing. Based on what?

Our bishop wears his outside when he has concelebrants, which is nearly always.

Yesterday, he was at a funeral in choir dress (which was really nice). He wore the pectoral cross outside.
 
The only time more than one bishop has a crozier is in the sacrament of Holy Orders for a Bishop. The newly consecrated bishop(s) recess out of the church with mitre, pectoral cross, zucchetto, and crozier, giving blessings to both sides of the congregation.

Who cares?

I remember Tim Cardinal Dolan telling the story about how the former papal nuncio to the USA, ABp. Pietro Sambi asked him while vesting for a Mass if it was the custom in the USA for bishops to wear the pectoral crosses under or over their chasubles? Dolan laughed and said “they’ll probably emulate whatever you do, archbishop.” Sambi laughed in return and said that in that case he would continue to move his pectoral cross underneath and then on top of his chasuble throughout the Mass. Then they both shared a nice laugh. I think that sort of attitude is far healthier than worrying about a “rubric” like the one you claim.

I think it looks quite good. In the Eastern side of the Church, many priests were pectoral crosses. Some bishops wear up to three necklaces during the Divine Liturgy. Looks good.

A pectoral cross worn by a bishop looks excuse me, “hideous?” How insulting!

So you are aware, the purpose of the zuchetto is not to differentiate priests from bishops.

I quite seriously think that you are making a gigantic deal out of absolutely nothing; you are, in tone, not so subtly implying that somehow this thread is “out of line” or something, for what reason I don’t know. There is a proper way for clerics to dress, and I was trying to sort it out.

You need to realize that the “proper way for clerics to dress” might well include wearing their pectoral crosses both inside or on top of their chasubles based on local customs.

The reason I take exception to this thread is because of the underlying obsession by people when it comes to what they term “rubrics.” They have this need to control and it can get pretty ugly.

In one case someone on this thread saying a pectoral cross on the outside of a chasuble looks “bad.” Based on what, their personal tastes? One person said the practice looks “hideous.” There has to be something seriously amiss with that person to actually post such a remark.

Step back for a moment and ask yourself why you would care so much about the “rubric” you mentioned even if it did exist.

Maybe because he cares about doing things the way the Church has told us to do it? 🤷
