Why do some Catholics walk up to the altar on their knees while praying during adoration of the Blessed Sacrament? Is this a cultural practice?

Why do some Catholics walk up to the altar on their knees while praying during adoration of the Bless Sacrament? Is this a cultural practice?
 
Its either a personal devotion or a cultural thing. All that is required by the Church is a single knee genuflection. Some countries have retained the tradition of a double knee genuflection when the Eucharist is exposed, but that is not the case in the United States.
