That niche is often left empty on Catholic parish churches:I love the exterior! Did there use to be statues in those alcoves above the doors?
Yes there is. Back in the day when missionary churches were built, it could take decades or even centuries until niches were filled with statuary of the saint who the church was named after. In some cases, the niches were never filled, hence the tradition in some places. If the statuary was cast from bronze, during war they would be confiscated and melted down and sometimes not replaced.
