Why do some people think the Pope is the antichrist?

People who say that the Pope is the Antichrist is because they NEED him to be, otherwise
they are wrong about they false religion. They NEED Roman Catholicism to be of the Devil
because if it is not, the only other conclusion for them is that it is of Christ, which they will
NOT allow.

They all say the same thing about every Pope and when each Pope dies they automatically
become “False Prophets”, so I *feel *anyway, so who really is of the Devil here?

OH but WAIT! They have a trick! It isn’t that “the Pope” is Antichrist, now it’s “the Papacy”!

The things non-Catholics will say to demonstrate how their religion is right. 🤷

From my point of view, i think the Papacy could only be anti Christ if it is a possission of high priest. For,“we no longer have a high priest, but Jesus”

Therefore, in this sense, its understandable to view the pope as THE High Priest. So, i would like us as Catholics to make a distinction between Jesus our High Priest and the Papacy.

For starters, a good definition of the term Vicar would be good, no?

I forgot to acknowledge this:)

There is much truth in this. Its a point that can be made for lots of Catholic doctrine. “It MUST be false, or we would NEED to convert…so I’ll determine it is false”

There’s a spirit of anti Christ, like someone else said, and that has to do with an attitude, like people’s attitude against God and His church, like people always wanting to attack the Catholic church, but I also believe there will be a physical manifestation of an anti Christ too, and the way the world thinks today with technology and science and people thinking religion is just a way people explained things before science and technology, I would not be surprised if the anti Christ did manifest himself as an alien being who supposedly wants to lead mankind into a more “evolved” species by eliminating the “primitive” religious beliefs. People would follow a supposedly benevolent higher alien species or being more than they will follow a human being because people are too aware these days of how imperfect **people **are by how many famous stars have fallen from grace. So people would not blindly follow any other human being like the Bible describes how people will follow the anti Christ. But think of a supposed benevolent alien being who came with technologies, and cures for diseases, and other types of higher technology who then went on to explain how religion is not real etc. People would fall for that today in a heartbeat! And those not strong in the faith would falter when faced with physical evidence of an alien being claiming to know more of the truth than mankind. In today’s context, the only thing that makes sense is the anti Christ coming as an alien being. People are too savvy these days to fall for another human being and follow him like they will follow the anti Christ. I can see an alien being setting up a one world system because he would be like an unbiased third party not on any one’s side, not on any religion’s side and not on any country’s side. So different nations would listen to him more than a human being with roots in a certain country and certain religion. They would think his agenda is to help all of mankind and not a certain country or religion.

Okay, now . Let’s put some of this in perspective.

many of us do believe that there will be a literal person who will be called Anti-Christ( sometimes called the beast). But there is also another beast called the false prophet.

These are evil people folks, pretenders. They will be appealing to the masses of people during a time of tremendous stress. The world will be looking for someone to fix everything. Not much different than what is happening today in parts of the world, only this is stuff on steroids, mega doses of steroids.

Along comes two men who manage their way into positions of power and of religion. They will be in league with other evil minded people. The stench of satan’s smoke is all around.

Is it possible that one day a man, who appears to be holy, says all the right things, does everything he is supposed to do, manages to bequile the others and get himself elected pope? Can happen.

Is it possible that the nations of the world will give sovernity over to a world goverence? you bet it can, and it is being done in increments right now.

Is it possible that islam obtains it’s dream and establishes a world wide caliphate and have universal sharia/ yes, that is it’s goal and the blood is spilled everyday to obtain it.

BIG BIG IF: that person who is evil to the core is a future pope, it is more likely he will be the man called the false prophet, because this person is involved with the establishment of the Anti-Christ’s world religion in which he eventually calls himself god.

The catholic church comes under scrutiny because of its world wide structure and its power. There are some issues speculated about concerning the ancient 'mother/child" cult. A lot of this speculation also was given prior to the world rise of Islam.

This is such a horrible subject because everyone gets angry. can’t say I blame anyone for it sounds so bad.

Truth is , it could involve Islam. or a pope. Or a pastor from San Antonio. BUT , I cannot stress this enough, these are evil pretenders. Who are devoted to satan. No one will know until it is too late.

The faithful catholics, if you are alive and a pope is involved, will survive. Your faith will save you. Your church will survive. Jesus Christ will have Come Again and the evil pretenders will have their due justice.
I can see an alien being coming to earth with the “answers to all mankind’s problems” as well as with technology and people will follow him more than they will follow any human.
Perhaps this is getting into the realm of science fiction…but with the advances in science of Artificial Intelligence and Cybernrtics…who is to say that in the not to distant future scienctists may be able to combine artificial systems with biological systems…add to that artificial intelligence…you may end up with a superhuman capable of doing and knowing things that people might take as being in the realm of the divine…please don’t take this as to mean this is what I believe…maybe I watch to much sci-fi…whacky
You never know, a lot of things we do today was once considered as far out science fiction. 😉 Science fiction is becoming science fact more and more.

Read The End of the Present World and the Mysteries of the Future Life, by Father Charles Arminjon–this was a favorite of St. Therese of Lisieux. He addresses the anti-Christ issue very thoroughly with references to Scripture and Scripture scholars.

some people say john paul the first was an imposter pope or antichrist others say that the this pope is the antichrist but I heard that it will be a man born on june 6th 2006 or so swears my fundemental baptist cousin

Many people, myself included, think the alien arrival will be the grand delusion God spoke of, that will test mankinds faith. I think 99% of people would be completely fooled by something like this, once an alien being states they have either created us or religion is not accurate, we will see most churches shutting down and eventually probably be forced to close, as our leaders will say it is wrong to continue to worship something that has been proven to be wrong.

Actually I cant think of a better scenario for Gods great delusion, this would test mans faith like nothing else could.

In The End of the Present World and the Mysteries of the Future Life, a classic by Father Charles Arminjon, this whole issue is addressed very thoroughly with references to Scripture and Scripture scholars. I would encourage you to take a look at it.

Exactly! I feel the same way!

I think it’s ridiculous because won’t the antichrist be someone who nobody suspects? Won’t everyone love the antichrist? So if someone is accused of being the antichrist, then doesn’t that mean they’re not?

  1. The bible states most people will think he is something more than what he is, as he will show great signs and wonders, such as causing fire to come down to earth from the sky, maybe raise someone from the dead, do other wonders, in front of large crowds, and probably on youtube as well, so everyone will know he has supernatural powers and therefore is more than a man, but in the beginning, he will use these powers for good, and before long, he will start to use them for evil. However knowing how I think, If I suddenly saw someone on the world scene who had these kinds of powers and proved it in front of large crowds, I would IMMEDIATELY suspect him of being demonic or something not from God, as I know this person is coming eventually, so I will know what to be on the look out for, but sadly, I think when most worldly people see this person doing supernatural things right in front of them, they will immediately think he is God or A god of some sort, but will not think of him as the antichrist, because they do not know what to be looking out for.

Many will be fooled, and I even think many in the church will also be fooled by this person, and the good deeds he does in the beginning.

The reason I quoted 5 passages from scripture, + 2 paragraphs from the CCC, is because that’s the context given for the antichrist. Could I ask, what passages are you referring to?

I have never heard of another religious leader being accused of being an antichrist. I wonder whether some of it is because the Pope is more visible and therefore an easy target? I haven’t the knowledge for the theological answers but when I hear adverse comments I do notice a bit of grumpy jealousy in the tone.

The pope cant be the antichrist, Ive never once seen our pope perform great signs and wonders in front of large crowds, proving to everyone he has supernatural powers, the antichrist will have these powers and will be anxious to show them off, especially in front of tv cameras and very large crowds.

Plus, the pope has clearly said (many times) he believes Jesus is the son of God and died for all our sins, I dont think the true antichrist would be psychically able to say that phrase.

People who think this about our pope do not know what to truly look for in the antichrist, and will probably not recognize him when he does come.

“Almost all the Doctors and Fathers, St. Augustine, St. Jerome, and St. Thomas,’ clearly maintain that this terrifying malefactor, this monster of impiety and depravity, will be a human person. The learned Bellarmine shows that it is impossible to give any other meaning to the words of St. Paul and those of Daniel 11:36-37.5 St. Paul designates this great adversary by a noun, calling him a man: “the man of sin, the son of perdition.” Daniel informs us that the Antichrist will attack all that is holy and worthy of respect, exalt himself boldly against the God of gods and consider as nothing the God of his Fathers: "Is Deum patrum suorum non reputabit."6 The apostle Paul adds that Christ will kill him. All these various aspects and characteristics evidently cannot be applied to an ideal, abstract being; they can fit only an individual of flesh and blood - a real, definite personage.

The Fathers and Doctors endeavored to ascertain the origin of the Antichrist, and to discover from what parents and race he will come. They unanimously express the opinion that he will be born of Jewish parents, and some declare that he will be of the tribe of Dan. Such is the interpretation they give of the passage of Genesis, “Let Dan be a snake in the way, a serpent in the path”;’ and of this other one from Jeremiah: "The snorting of his horses was heard from Dan."8 They also surmise that St. John, in Revelation, failed to mention the tribe of Dan through hatred of the Antichrist. But all these suppositions are uncertain. What seems beyond doubt is that the Antichrist will be of Jewish birth.

St. Ambrose, in his commentaries on the letter to the Thessalonians, says that he will be circumcised. Sulpicius Severus, in book II of his Dialogues, says that he will compel all his subjects to submit to circumcision. Moreover, all concur in saying that at the beginning of his reign he will succeed, by means of his trickery and fame, in making the Jews believe that he is the Messiah whom they have unceasingly awaited, and they, in their blindness, will hasten to receive him and honor him as such. That is how Suarez and most of the commentators interpret this saying of our Lord Jesus Christ, in St. John, 5:43: "I have come in my Father’s name, and yet you do not accept me; but let someone come in his own name and him you will accept."9 The same meaning must be given to these other words of St. Paul to the Thessalonians: “because they have not opened their hearts to the truth in order to be saved. Therefore God is sending upon them a perverse spirit which leads them to give credence to falsehood.” " Now, is it likely that the Jews would acclaim as Messiah a man who did not belong to their race, and had not been circumcised? The Antichrist, then, will be a Jew.”

The Church doesn’t teach that there will be a particular individual who will be THE antiChrist.

But, if there ever were such an individual, of course he would be a Pope. It would surely not be a Baptist, or a Lutheran, or a Methodist. He would be a Catholic, and not just any ol’ Catholic, but the Pope of the Church.

Do we Catholics still not understand that the road to Christ is a road of irony? This King of Kings, who was born in an animal stable, lived a humble life, and died naked on a Roman cross?

Who did Jesus choose to be our first Pope? Peter! Whose first words to Jesus were, “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.” Who had faith enough to leave the boat, but then started to drown. Whom Jesus rebuked, “Get behind me, Satan.” Who betrayed Jesus three times (Judas only did it once). THAT GUY was our first Pope???

Yeah, THAT GUY was our first Pope. And he was a GOOD Pope. There have already been evil Popes (Alexander-4, for example).

IF there is one specific antiChrist guy, it MUST be a Pope. But, like the sinful Popes who have already come before him, he will still be protected from teaching error.

Prove it. Show me where I have said this, or any Lutheran on this site for that matter. Prove it, or retract it.

Pope John XXIII, Pope Paul VI, Pope John Paul I, Pope John Paul II were not false prophets, but good Christian men.

Not simply now, but for 500 years, this has been the Lutheran teaching. That it seems new to you is merely a reflection of your lack of knowledge of it.
