If a Protestant claims Catholics are going to hell, what exactly is their reasoning? What scripture are they relying on?

To put the question another way, what is required to be saved, that Catholics do not do/have?

As with just about every question concerning ALL of Protestantism - the answer depends upon who is making the statement. There is no central organization for all Protestant religions, therefore there is not only 1 single explanation or line of reasoning.

With Catholicism… even if each Catholic has his or her own interpretation, there is at least SOME authority you can go back to for a definitive answer. Not so with Protestantism.

But in GENERAL… based on my experience with a great number of Protestants on the internet and within my own family…
  1. Catholics believe in the Pope - the bible doesn’t say to follow a Pope, but Christ alone - ergo Catholics are goin’ to Hell.
  2. Catholics believe that works can get you into heaven and that you have to follow the Sacraments and the bible does not say this - Therefore Catholics are going to hell.
  3. Catholics worship Saints and Statues… the bible says to only worship God. Therefore Catholics are goin’ to hell.
  4. Catholics believe in all sorts of stuff that isn’t in the bible. Therefore they are goin’ to hell.
All lines of reasoning which end in “…therefore Catholics are going to hell” use some variation of the basic points listed above as their justification.

Somewhere along the line, the person making that claim has determined that if a person deviates from their own understanding of the bible, then that person can not go to heaven and since Catholic theology differs from their own understanding… then Catholics, can’t go to heaven.

In other words, they can not reconcile their own understanding of Catholicism with their own understanding of the bible… therefore it is the Catholic who is in the wrong and NOT their understanding.

The first question would be how do they know. But aside from that, here are some thoughts, and this will vary depending on the group:
  1. idolatrous worship of Mary and the saints
  2. necromancy
  3. the pope
  4. works righteousness
  5. idolatrous worship of bread and wine, to name a few.

I don’t think it is as much what you don’t do, but what you do do, as I said above.

Christ is rather clear what we must do:
believe in Him
Love the Lord your God…
And once you believe:
and your neighbors as yourself
take up your cross…
confess
take and eat…

So, based on this, Catholics are NOT damned to Hell simply by being Catholic.

As the often quoted line goes: “Most people do not dislike what the Catholic church teaches as much as they dislike what they THINK the Catholic church teaches.”

As Catholics… we’d all maintain that they have some profound misunderstanding about WHAT Catholics believe and Catholicism teaches… or else they would no doubt BE Catholic.

RIGHT?

To answer the question contained in the title of the post, very simply it’s because those who make that claim understand neither Catholicism nor hell.

I always like to ask Protestants if they believe Christ built a “Church” or wrote a book…aka “The Bible”? Remember, we are the “pilgrim church on earth”! No worries, we’ve got it figured out. Now we just have to live like Christ in our daily lives. It’s a tough assignment as we all know. Peace and blessings

But let’s not spend too much time fixating on the splinter in the eyes of some of our Protestant brothers and sisters while ignoring the log in the eyes of some of our Catholic brothers and sisters…there are plenty of Catholics who are convinced Protestants are going to Hell.

We should concentrate on the inclusive message of God’s love, and steer away from the message of exclusivity which can only be the work of the Evil One.

Peace

Well they think that Hell is a place where all the Popes and saints go after death.

Sounds like heaven to me:D

Put it this way Heaven for a cat is a place overrun by mice - an eternal mouse hunting ground.

Hell for a mouse is - where cats hunt eternally!😛

Protestants are like Sheep, they follow and run away from there Churches when it doesn’t fit there agenda.

This brings nothing to the conversation. It only serves to make you look simple and bigoted.

How can you label every single denomination of Christianity that isn’t Catholic or Orthodox?

I hear that there are over 33,000 denominations. You don’t think that one of them has an established set of beliefs?

Next time you post try and use less sweeping generalizations. I don’t want people to think you are ignorant

Wow, i can see somebodies done their homework(!) And anyway, ive never heard a protestant condem a Roman Catholic to hell before, although i have heard it the other way round…

Oh goodness. Then you haven’t been on the web much. As an example, a website by a man named David J. Stewart is hideously vicious to Catholics, and he is about equally so to Anglicans and Lutherans.

There’s lots of it out there.

I’m guessing you don’t live in the American South?

Really? Well thats just ridiculous, at the end of the day we’re all Christians, we just practice in different ways and generally i cant get onto those kind of websites because my mums parental control thing says its a cult site.

To the above poster- you are blessed indeed if you have never heard a Protestant condemn a Catholic to hell. I am a recent convert to Catholicism. I was raised in the Church of the Nazarene and had friends in many different Protestant denominations. My best friends were from a Baptist background and even though we had some major theological differences, we were amazingly close and did Bible studies together and spent time together nearly every single day. At my Nazarene church that I attended for 22 years I was, at different times a church board member, youth pastor, children’s minister and active in music ministry.
When God led me to the Catholic Church, He did so by using my passionate love of Sacred Scripture to convince me of the truth of the teachings of the CC. His call to Catholicism was the strongest call I have ever had and it has been a joyful journey for me and my family. I could not imagine my faith life apart from the Eucharist and the beauty of the CC.
The major difficulty was my Protestant friends. They now believe I have abandoned God (even though both my faith and prayer life have grown) and have all chosen to abandon our friendship rather than enable me to go to hell. I know they are amazing people and that they really do mean well, but it has been incredibly sad. Worse still, since others have seen them do this to me because of my conversion, it has seriously injured their testimony as Christians to some of our friends.
We are all brothers and sisters in Christ and those of us who repent from sin and turn and passionately follow our Lord are part of one family- even though we remain imperfectly united. The following is from the Office of readings from today:

Second reading
From a discourse on the psalms by Saint Augustine, bishop
Whether they like it or not,
those who are outside the Church are our brothers

We entreat you, brothers, as earnestly as we are able, to have charity, not only for one another, but also for those who are outside the Church. Of these some are still pagans, who have not yet made an act of faith in Christ. Others are separated, insofar as they are joined with us in professing faith in Christ, our head, but are yet divided from the unity of his body. My friends, we must grieve over these as over our brothers; and they will only cease to be so when they no longer say our Father.

The prophet refers to some men saying: When they say to you: You are not our brothers, you are to tell them: You are our brothers. Consider whom he intended by these words. Were they the pagans? Hardly; for nowhere either in Scripture or in our traditional manner of speaking do we find them called our brothers. Nor could it refer to the Jews, who do not believe in Christ. Read Saint Paul and you will see that when he speaks of “brothers,” without any qualification, he refers always to Christians. For example, he says: Why do you judge your brother or why do you despise your brother? And again: You perform iniquity and common fraud, and this against your brothers.

Those then who tell us: You are not our brothers, are saying that we are pagans. That is why they want to baptize us again, claiming that we do not have what they can give. Hence their error of denying that we are their brothers. Why then did the prophet tell us: Say to them: You are our brothers? It is because we acknowledge in them that which we do not repeat. By not recognizing our baptism, they deny that we are their brothers; on the other hand, when we do not repeat their baptism but acknowledge it to be our own, we are saying to them: You are our brothers.

If they say, “Why do you seek us? What do you want of us?” we should reply: You are our brothers. They may say, “Leave us alone. We have nothing to do with you.” But we have everything to do with
you, for we are one in our belief in Christ; and so we should be in one body, under one head.

And so, dear brothers, we entreat you on their behalf, in the name of the very source of our love, by whose milk we are nourished, and whose bread is our strength, in the name of Christ our Lord and his gentle love. For it is time now for us to show them great love and abundant compassion by praying to God for them. May he one day give them a clear mind to repent and to realize that they have nothing now but the sickness of their hatred, and the stronger they think they are, the weaker they become. We entreat you then to pray for them, for they are weak, given to the wisdom of the flesh, to fleshly and carnal things, but yet they are our brothers. They celebrate the same sacraments as we, not indeed with us, but still the same. They respond with the same Amen, not with us, but still the same. And so pour out your hearts for them in prayer to God.

Richard Bennett,an anti-Catholic man, seems to be a bitter man…A lot of these ex-priests would probably still be Catholic had they not become Priests, some people should do some more searching before deciding to have a career in religion.

All that has been said is true enough but it misses the point. I was a Protestant so I can claim some expertise, (that’s a joke.). But seriously, Methodists have more in common with Catholics than they do with Baptists, let alone Assemblies of God or Adventists. Really the only thing all Protestant sects have in common is anti-Catholicism!! It’s the only thing they all agree on.

Did I mention I’m also a veteran so I know a bit about warfare. Soldiers always demonize the enemy!! It’s a way of keeping your sanity in an insane situation, so, of course Catholics are all going to H-E double hockey sticks; they, (we,) have to be wrong so they can be right! That’s why I’ve never known a Protestant who came to really understand the Catholic faith who any longer believed Catholics go to hell and most eventually convert.

Frank Sheed said it best in the title of one of his books “theology and Sanity”, Protestantism is insane - Catholicism is sane!!!

I wouldn’t say the onlything that protestants have in common is anti-catholic feeling, a lot of protestants have nothing against the catholic church, most protestants just want a simpler less ritualistic way of worshiping God, which is fine as long as their christian, and i know that people are going to say that my church is elaborate but thats high church Anglicanism and people are generally that because they like the catholic ceremony but dislike the rules that go with them.

Cheers, im 13 btw nd me mum should have ditched the parental controls ages ago but my big bro downloaded porn onto the family computer and so she kept them, only on a stricter format.
