Some other Christians I don’t know usually use John 3:16 or a similar verse to “prove” Catholics wrong

Other than that I don’t kanow

God bless

When people make the mistake of saying their religion is better than another then it’s easy to make those kind of assertions. The Church was guilty of the same reasoning during days past when it looked upon all Protestants as heretics and all non-Christians as heathens and declared that none of these folks were destined for heaven. Likewise, any Catholic who incurred papal wrath by not adhering to the rules set out by the papacy were not to go to heaven. But the bottom line is only God can judge if we are worthy of heaven. Neither pope nor president nor protestant has the ability to judge that.

Well, all I know is that the only way to get into heaven is to accept Jesus Christ as the son of God and our Savior. However, I am a soon to be Catholic, and I believe what it teaches. I was southern baptist born and raised, and the hate that spews out about catholicism being pagan is disgusting. I’ve never really had any experience with the other way around. I’ve been attending a catholic church for a couple of years, to gorw and make sure it’s what I want, and all I get it acceptance and tolerance. I haven’t heard anything, but love and pray for everyone. Help everyone out no matter who they are. It is not our place to judge (Thank GOD!!!) so no Christian should judge the other for their denominational practices, even if we don’t agree, as long as they love the Lord our God and accept Jesus Christ.

Side note - Catholics DO NOT WORSHIP Mary and saints. We ask them for guidance and ask them to pray for us ---- Like asking your Grandmother or your best friend or church. Not pagan… Juuuust saying.

The church never taught this. It continues to say that salvation is through the Catholic church, even for non-Catholics. The proceeding paragraphs to 846 provide clarity. The Catechism today is clearer on the subject but the teaching has not changed.

“Outside the Church there is no salvation”

846 How are we to understand this affirmation, often repeated by the Church Fathers?335 Re-formulated positively, it means that all salvation comes from Christ the Head through the Church which is his Body:

Basing itself on Scripture and Tradition, the Council teaches that the Church, a pilgrim now on earth, is necessary for salvation: the one Christ is the mediator and the way of salvation; he is present to us in his body which is the Church. He himself explicitly asserted the necessity of faith and Baptism, and thereby affirmed at the same time the necessity of the Church which men enter through Baptism as through a door. Hence they could not be saved who, knowing that the Catholic Church was founded as necessary by God through Christ, would refuse either to enter it or to remain in it.336
847 This affirmation is not aimed at those who, through no fault of their own, do not know Christ and his Church:

Those who, through no fault of their own, do not know the Gospel of Christ or his Church, but who nevertheless seek God with a sincere heart, and, moved by grace, try in their actions to do his will as they know it through the dictates of their conscience - those too may achieve eternal salvation.337
848 "Although in ways known to himself God can lead those who, through no fault of their own, are ignorant of the Gospel, to that faith without which it is impossible to please him, the Church still has the obligation and also the sacred right to evangelize all men."338

@Porknpie – You say the Church never taught that unbaptized never went to heaven? And you say the Church’s position has never changed? I seem to remember being indoctrinated about Limbo throughout Catholic school . . . You know – the place either God or the church created for those who couldn’t get into heaven through no fault of their own. Whatever happened to Limbo if the Church never changed its position???

You are mistaken. Limbo was never taught as a doctrine of the Church.

Whatever your teachers may have said, your assumptions are wrong.

Megan: S. Baptist and Catholics preach a different gospel, which is right? Speaking of worshipping Mary: Have you been to Walshingham, England? There is a huge statue of Mary there. “Pilgrims” come by the busload and bow down, prostrate themselves, kneel , etc. before this statue. They kiss it, rub it, pray to it. They apparently don’t know that they aren’t supposed to “worship” it. There are many more shrines to Mary than to the Lord Jesus Christ in the Catholic world. BTW, Peter Kreef, a devout Catholic apologist, says that “many Catholics don’t know the gospel.” What do you make of that?

I’m sure there are many Catholics that don’t know the bible, or the teachings of the Church, that doesn’t make either false. As to worshipping Mary, I do believe we should think about how our actions can lead others to the false notion that we are worshipping her other than giving her the respect and honor she has already been given by God. That being said others can’t judge if someone is worshipping or honoring someone by their actions. Here in the south we have many statues of General Lee, a lot of southerners still think of him as the greatest general. Imagine a parade with General Lee coming down the road, all the people praising him and wanting to shake his hand. Would they be worshipping him or honoring him?

On the other topic:
After Mother Teresa died I heard a preacher say she wasn’t a Christian. That says a lot about what some Protestants think about Catholics.

Nope, North of England, best place on planet!!! 😃
What the poster was referring too, is that in the Deep South States in the USA.
There was and is, in minor degrees some very serious groups of men and women who
hated Catholics along with some other groups…

One of these groups, and more than not, the main one… was and is called:

The Klu Klux Klan… (you can Google it)

Three times in American History this group has risen up in large forces…to stand up
against certain kinds of people and the Catholic Church…

They were and are, a secret group of men and women… who have at times done terrible things to places and people… Burning down churches, killing people…etc…

They usually work out of the Terrorist Style… where one lives in a community and knows that there is a group in their mist… but no one knows their personal identity.
At any time, a member of this group might focus on a person and then make that person
their target at the next meeting they have… No one on their “hate” list is safe…

I was born and raised in the Appalachia Hills of Kentucky and have lived most of my life in an area where the Klan was and is, active… I am well aware of what might could happen as I was one of eight Catholics in the county… And though I was never affected personally by their hate… I knew and know, that their hatred is real and can be fatal…

The writer was attempting to say…too you…"Oh yes there is real hatred for Catholic
in some southern states… here in the USA…

But to be fair… the Klan did not just have disdain and hatred for Catholic alone… they have a long list of others they do not like either… for example: Jews, People not born in the states and who live here, People of dark skin colors…Communists, and others which I can not recall…

Their views can come out violent from threats, to beatings, to murder…

In discussing the gospel with Catholic friends I find that they almost uniformily do not know the gospel by which one is saved. Four of these friends told me to “keep the commandments.” When I asked them what they were thery couldn’t name them. A monsignor told me to “pray 3 x a day. The prayers could be about anything, long or short.” A teacher of religion told me to, “Pray a lot and do the best you can.” A priest told me everyone was saved. None of them told me “To believe on the Lord Jesus and thou shalt be saved” [Acts 16:31] nor did any mention 1 Cor. 15:1-4. Our apostle Paul calls this the gospel by which “we are S-A-V-E-D.” And so it goes.

Has anyone ever quoted you John 6:53-56.
Jesus said to them, "Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink of His blood, you do not have life within you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him.

i was raised southern baptist. and it’s not just catholics who dont know the gospel. i’ve never been to england. i live in louisiana. what i do know is that you cant judge what’s in everyone’s hearts bc you don’t know them. generalities are misleading. there are extremists with wild beliefs, and i’m sure there are some who DO pray to mary as if she were Jesus. but most people use the term “pray” to mean talking to people who are not on the earth. if i asked my mom for guidance and prayer, is that praying to her? no. bc she’s here physically. thats what i do when talking to saints and mary. i ask for guidance and prayers. also, english translations of the bible often miss minuities. prostrate/worship are often interchangable, especially in the old testament. kind of like we only have one word for wine, when in the hebrew bible there were 3 types referred to. thats why everyone should STUDY their bible. but that doesnt mean everyone does. i’ve always thirsted to know more. and as far as who’s right and who’s wrong, we wont know until we’re in heaven (or hell, i suppose) but as long as you believe john 3:16, the rest, i believe, is how you’re comfortable with worshipping. i wasnt into the baptist way of doing things. so i studied other denominations, and when i found i was interested in catholicism, i went to mass and studied it extensively for 2 years until i decided it was right for me. taking my rcia classes next month! but, think about this. people believe their way is right mostly bc its how they were raised. somepeople are so extreme they’re willing to kill for their faith. do you believe muslims are wrong? bc they KNOW you are. so, for Christians to get into eachothers faces (nnot that you were) is not good. i believe people from all sorts of Christian denominations are going to heaven according to whats in their hearts.

your argument
in quoting john 6 53-56 or that you have been baptised and the fact that things like this make you christian is what leads many protestants to believe that you are lost and are going to hell.

In John 3 Jesus tells Nicodemus that he must be born again.
I am willing to say that many on this forum have not been born again as Jesus said.
When a person takes of Holy Communion this does not save them
Jesus said you must be born again. This act of being born again is a transformation of the person which Paul describes 2nd Corinthians 5: 17 therefore if any man be in Christ he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold all things are become as new.
In 1 Cor:12:13 we see that it is the Holy Spirit that baptises us into one body.
In Romans 6:1-10 it describes more of what has happened and that the body is Christ this is a baptism that only the Holy Spirit can do. This is not water baptism but where the Holy Spirit baptises you into the body of Christ.

Being born again is only what God can do in you and for you.
It is recieved through repentance and faith in Jesus Christ and the work He did for you through His shed blood on the cross.

If one takes of the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ in holy communion and has not been born again then he; no matter what he does is not worthy, and will recieve damnation to themselves. 1 Corianthians 11;27-34
The very body and the blood of Jesus Christwill rise up against that person because he is dead in trespasses and sins
Jesus said you must be born again!

Over the last 200 years there have been many protestant leaders who have been false prophets or false teachers (e.g., Benny Hinn). Am I to conclude, therefore, that protestantism leads one to a false religion?

Thank you for the word “many”, though a better word would be “some”. the words I would use are, “speak for yourself”.
I am willing to say that many on this forum have not been born again as Jesus said.
And I am willing to say that you have no way of knowing this.

*He that believes and is baptized shall be saved.
*Baptism now saves you.
*Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

And perhaps most importantly here, Luther’s commentary on the 8th commandment:
Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.

What does this mean?–Answer.

We should fear and love God that we may not deceitfully belie, betray, slander, or defame our neighbor, but defend him, [think and] speak well of him, and put the best construction on everything.

Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord. 28Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself.
Jesus said you must be born again!
Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.

Hope,
I don’t believe that eating the flesh and drinking the blood of Jesus makes us Christians or saves us from hell. I believe this is what Christians do because Christ commanded us to. We are called to partake of his body in a worthy manner. Part of that is to recognize Him in the Eucharist. My point being that some may say that Catholics aren’t saved because of ABC, yet as far as I know we are the only ones obeying His command in John 6:53-56.

I was attacked by a Baptist who hates Roman Catholics after visiting a prayer meeting at his church and never went back. I don’t really know what is going on in his head! Some Protestants think Catholics and Orthodox don’t believe John 3:16, claim they believe the Bible, yet some how can rationalize away scripture themselves. For example, when Jesus said ‘This is my body’ he really meant, ‘This is not my body,’ etc. But most are not like that, only a few extremists. There could be nominally Christian Protestants, Catholics, and Orthodox alike, so my attitude is, enough. i
