Why do some Protestants think Catholics are going to hell?

Cat, I don’t want to put words in your mouth but as you believe Christ was only speaking symbolically and you disagree with the Catholic and Orthodox interpretation of v63, how do you account for the disciples going out and preaching that it was his actual body and blood present in the Eucharist? Was Jesus a very bad teacher or were the 12 disciples hard of hearing?

Below are some quotes from the very early church fathers. There are many more ECF quotes than this as well as scripture passages. A good website is scripturecatholic.com. We’re straying off topic so I’ll let you have the last word but I would appreciate hearing your response to the above question(s). God bless!

They abstain from the Eucharist and from prayer, because they confess not the Eucharist to be the flesh of our Saviour Jesus Christ, which suffered for our sins, and which the Father, of His goodness, raised up again." Ignatius of Antioch, Epistle to Smyrnaeans, 7,1 (c. A.D. 110).

“For not as common bread and common drink do we receive these; but in like manner as Jesus Christ our Saviour, having been made flesh and blood for our salvation, so likewise have we been taught that the food which is blessed by the prayer of His word, and from which our blood and flesh by transmutation are nourished, is the flesh and blood of that Jesus who was made flesh.” Justin Martyr, First Apology, 66 (c. A.D. 110-165).

“[T]he bread over which thanks have been given is the body of their Lord, and the cup His blood…” Irenaeus, Against Heresies, IV:18,4 (c. A.D. 200).

“He acknowledged the cup (which is a part of the creation) as his own blood, from which he bedews our blood; and the bread (also a part of creation) he affirmed to be his own body, from which he gives increase to our bodies.” Irenaeus, Against Heresies, V:2,2 (c. A.D. 200).

“But what consistency is there in those who hold that the bread over which thanks have been given is the Body of their Lord, and the cup His Blood, if they do not acknowledge that He is the Son of the Creator of the world…” Irenaeus, Against Heresies, IV:18, 2 (c. A.D. 200).

“For the blood of the grape–that is, the Word–desired to be mixed with water, as His blood is mingled with salvation. And the blood of the Lord is twofold. For there is the blood of His flesh, by which we are redeemed from corruption; and the spiritual, that by which we are anointed. And to drink the blood of Jesus, is to become partaker of the Lord’s immortality; the Spirit being the energetic principle of the Word, as blood is of flesh. Accordingly, as wine is blended with water, so is the Spirit with man. And the one, the mixture of wine and water, nourishes to faith; while the other, the Spirit, conducts to immortality. And the mixture of both–of the water and of the Word–is called Eucharist, renowned and glorious grace; and they who by faith partake of it are sanctified both in body and soul.” Clement of Alexandria, The Instructor, 2 (ante A.D. 202).

“Then, having taken the bread and given it to His disciples, He made it His own body, by saying, ‘This is my body,’ that is, the figure of my body. A figure, however, there could not have been, unless there were first a veritable body…He did not understand how ancient was this figure of the body of Christ, who said Himself by Jeremiah: ‘I was like a lamb or an ox that is brought to the slaughter, and I knew not that they devised a device against me, saying, Let us cast the tree upon His bread,’ which means, of course, the cross upon His body. And thus, casting light, as He always did, upon the ancient prophecies, He declared plainly enough what He meant by the bread, when He called the bread His own body. He likewise, when mentioning the cup and making the new testament to be sealed ‘in His blood,’ affirms the reality of His body. For no blood can belong to a body which is not a body of flesh. If any sort of body were presented to our view, which is not one of flesh, not being fleshly, it would not possess blood. Thus, from the evidence of the flesh, we get a proof of the body, and a proof of the flesh from the evidence of the blood.” Tertullian, Against Marcion, 40 (A.D. 212).
Pork,
With your permission, here is what Luther said about the ECF’s and the real presence.
Who, but the devil, has granted such license of wresting the words of the holy Scripture? Who ever read in the Scriptures, that my body is the same as the sign of my body? or, that is is the same as it signifies? What language in the world ever spoke so? It is only then the devil, that imposes upon us by these fanatical men. Not one of the Fathers of the Church, though so numerous, ever spoke as the Sacramentarians: not one of them ever said, It is only bread and wine; or, the body and blood of Christ is not there present.
Surely, it is not credible, nor possible, since they often speak, and repeat their sentiments, that they should never (if they thought so) not so much as once, say, or let slip these words: It is bread only; or the body of Christ is not there, especially it being of great importance, that men should not be deceived. Certainly, in so many Fathers, and in so many writings, the negative might at least be found in one of them, had they thought the body and blood of Christ were not really present: but they are all of them unanimous.”

If a Protestant claims Catholics are going to hell, what exactly is their reasoning? What scripture are they relying on?

To put the question another way, what is required to be saved, that Catholics do not do/have?
Because they beleive incompletely.

-Their bible is incomplete. (66 books)
-Their deposit of faith is incomplete. (sola scriptura)
-They have only one of the 7 sacraments. (baptism)

No matter how many times you tell them that we venerate Mary and the saints,- they still say we worship them.
No matter how many times you tell them that the Eucharist is truly the real presence of Christ- they still think it’s a symbol.

etc
etc
etc

It doesn’t surprise me that they think that catholics are going to hell just because they are catholics.

Jon, thank you for your insights, no permission ever needs to be asked. It is curious though how God gave man - daily - true bread from heaven in the form of manna in the OT yet in the NT, the bread from heaven is only symbolic. This makes the NT fulfillment less than the OT foreshadowing. :banghead: Necessary to do so, one has to misunderstand v63, dismiss scripture that supports the real presence and believe that the disciples did not understand Jesus. This implies to me, that Jesus was an extremely poor teacher on a subject that was foreshadowed in the OT, explained clearly in Jesus’ own words and believed not only in the early church as “real” food but also up to and through the reformation (with Luther’s altered real presence belief included…). A symbolic only understanding is a fine example of a man made tradition(s), reading the bible through a set of preconceived beliefs. 🤷

What of those who have not heard the Gospel?
Good question! At some point in time every person becomes aware that there is a God. At this time he will either seek a relationship with God or he will reject Him. God is absolutely faithful; if we seek a relationship with Him He will make the gospel known to that person. This is where those who are already saved come in. We have been given the wonderful privilige of presenting the gospel of the grace of God to the lost. A case in point is Livingston on Africa. The natives came running to him saying, “Where have you been? We’ve been waiting for you.” No one will be able to say, “I didn’t know.”

2Co 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. (KJV)

2Co 5:18 And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; (KJV)

2Co 5:19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation. (KJV)
2Co 5:20 Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God. (KJV)

2Co 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. (KJV)

Grace and peace,

Okay, but you have not answered the question.

What of those who have died, for example, and who never had a chance to hear the Gospel?

I did answer the question, just not to your satisfaction I guess. God’s justice is perfect. No one will go to hell just because they haven’t heard the gospel, they will go to hell because they rejected Him at the point of realizing that there is a God. The only way to heaven is through the Son, the Lord Jesus Christ [Acts 4:12]. He is the ONE mediator who gave Himself as a ransom for ALL, to be testified at due time [1 Tim. 2:4-6]. God is also perfect faithfulness, He will see to it that those who are seeking a relationship with Him hear the gospel.

Cat, so based on your response above, you believe that Catholics are going to heaven? 😃

The only Catholics, Baptist, Methodist, etc. who are going to heaven are those who have believed on the Lord Jesus Christ as the ONE and ONLY Lord and Savior. Membership in a church does not constitute salvation unless that membership is in the Body of Christ. We become a member of the Body of Christ by being baptized into that Body by the Holy Spirit the moment we believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. It is my prayer that all people, regardless of denominational choice be saved and meet me in heaven. But there is only one way - “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved.”

Hi, yes, it is dangerous to reach generalised conclusions. I think these general posts are being made because the original question is very generally stated. In reading the previous post, I think what this person meant was that the persons he is referring to do not believe there are 7 sacraments, so matrimony is not a sacrament to them, regardless of whether or not we Catholics may consider their marriage to be a valid sacramental marriage.

I think it is worthwhile to consider, when we are discussing here, whether we are talking about what individuals of various protestant denominations believe, or the official teachings of their denominations. I realize that many protestant denominations allow much diversity of opinion but the synods of the Lutheran Church, for example, have published and official beliefs. One of those beliefs is that there are only 2 sacraments - baptism and Eucharist/Holy Communion.

On another note, speaking of official beliefs, do you know of any mainline protestant churches whose officially published beliefs do NOT indicate that Catholics worship the Blessed Virgin Mary? I do not. Just thinking about this.

Why Catholics will not receive eternal life.

For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God. Romans 10:3

I’ll tell you why…

Because, The first sacrament is the sacrament of baptism. The Roman Catholic Institution says it is one of the 7 channels of grace through which one can be saved. Supposedly, you cannot be exposed to “Jesus” (The blessed Sacrament, the wafer god) because you are under evil spirits. The priest exorcises the demons by anointing oil and putting salt in the mouth to preserve from future influence of evil spirits. Then one is baptized with water. At this point, you are supposed to be cleansed of original sin, made a child of God and an heir of heaven, provided you die in grace. You are supposedly “born again”, and at that moment become a member of the Roman catholic Church, and is subject to it’s laws.

THE BIBLE SAYS: Baptism is undergone by BELIEVERS in CHRIST to show their identification with Him in His deatj, burial, and resurrection. (Romans 6:3 10 and Acts 8:36-38)

Note: First they BELIEVED. THEN they were BAPTIZED!

The Sacrament of Penance
By this sacrament, sins commited after baptism are forgiven through absolution by a priest. To receive the Sacrament of Penance worthily, a person must examine his conscience, be sorry for his sins, purpose firmly not to sin again, confess his sins to a priest and perform the penance the priest gives him. Roman Catholicism replaces repentance with the sacrifice of penance.

WHO DOES THE BIBLE INSTRUCT BELIEVERS TO GO TO WHEN THEY SIN?

“My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for our’s only, but also for the sins of the whole world.” 1 John 2:1-2

Jesus Christ alone has the power to forgive sins. Not fallible man!

Did the idea of the confessional come from the Vatican? NO! It originated back in ancient Babylon, where they worshipped the ancient sun god "“Baal”. It was part of an occult religious system. After the great flood, Noah’s offspring built the city of Babylon. It became the religious city of the world. Here the first confessional was first used to find out what was going on, and to control and blackmail. The confessional is NOT found in the word of God (The Bible). It is one of man’s inventions!

Did you ever wonder where the priests come from? The term “priest” was taken from the Jewish religion, along with the altar, incense, etc. (Heb 8:4)

The Bible NEVER mentions nuns, monks, or popes. This system, along with the statues, candles, and religious costumes, was created by the Roman Catholic Church to impress it’s followers. The people love it, but only their leaders really understand the religious phraseology and psychology used to control their nearly one billion members.

What about holy communion. Doesn’t that sound Christian? Let’s see what’s really behind the communion as it’s practiced in the Roman Catholic churches. In ancient Babylon they worshipped the sun god “Baal”. Then this religion moved into Egypt using different names. On the altars of Egypt were sun shaped wafers made of unleavened bread. These wafers were consecrated by the Egyptian priests and supposedly they magically became the flesh of the sun god Osiris. This is called “transubstantiation”. Then they ate their god…(a type of eucharist).

In the Roman Catholic church, the host, or wafer, that will after it’s blessed supposedly become the “Holy Eucharist”. It is disk shaped (like the sun). Roman Catholics believe that it actually becomes the blood, body, soul and divinity of Christ, and it must be worshipped as God. In the “Offeratory” the priest offers the wafer and wine. Then comes the “Preface,” a prayer of praise…followed by the “Sanctus” a prayer of joy, a cry of welcome for the Lord who will enter the wafer. Then comes the consecration. This is the highlight of the Mass. This is when the wafer “Becomes God”. The wine is also consecrated, supposedly becoming the actual blood of Jesus.
Let’s go back to the first Holy Communion. You must be old enough to know the difference between the consecrated host (wafer) and ordinary bread. The priest, with his"magical" powers turns the wafer into the Lord Jesus himself…transubstantiation).

Roman Catholics believe that the priest is so powerful, he can pull Christ out of Heaven, put him on the cross, sacrifice Him again during the Mass. In Egypt, the “IHS” stood for Isis, Horeb and Seb.The Holy Eucharist is placed in the center of the sunburst design called the monstrance. Roman Catholics must bow down and worship the little wafer as God…or else! Who dreamed this up? The Egyptians called it “Osiris” long before the the popes called it “Jesus”.

Doesn’t this information upset you? It should beloved!..

…cont

Around 1563, the Catholic church created horrible laws at the Council of Trent that made it a death sentence for ANYONE who said the bread and wine used in their Holy Communion were only symbolic.

Multitudes died on racks and were tortured in every way imaginable because they defied the Council of Trent, It could happen again! This totally violates scripture!!!

“For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense,” saith the Lord. (Hebrews 10:30) and the Lord Jesus is very angry with the Vatican.

A Roman Catholic must believe they are eating the creator of the universe. Now they tell everyone they have “received” Jesus as their Saviour. Protestants believe the Lord’s supper is SYMBOLIC. Note: If “God” should drop by accident, the communion paten will catch “Him.” (It’s a little net) used to catch their wafer “god”

THE BIBLE SAYS: “And when he had give thanks, he brake it, and said, take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: THIS IS TO DO IN REMEMBERANCE OF ME. After also the same manner he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, this cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in rememberance of me. For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come.” 1 Cor 11:24-26 and 1 Cor 10:16,17,21

In Old Testament days, Jews sacrificed animals for the sins of Israel. At times it was a continuous sacrifice. It was a sacred and Holy thing and people were afraid to miss it. Then after awile, it didn’t mean anything to them.

But then Christ came from heaven to stop all this, by sacrificing himself ONE TIME on the cross. HE SETTLED IT FOREVER! When the Lord Jesus died on the cross, He cried, “It is finished!” At that instant, the veil in the Holy Temple, covering the Holy of Holies was ripped from top to bottom, and God did away with daily animal sacrifices and the Jewish faith. Christ’s sacrifice was PERFECT…Once and for all time. NEVER TO BE REPEATED. (Heb 9:12, also 10:12 &14)

Jesus calls the Roman Catholic church THE MOTHER OF ABOMINATIONS (Rev 17:5) and has promised to destroy her, and all those with her. But he loves you enough to warn you, and call you to Himself. Jesus says: “Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not her plagues.” Rev 18:4

Oh my, feel the hatred. Where’s my copy of “Catholicism and Fundamentalism”?

You know, I was beginning to think this type of hate-filled screed was finally dying out. More’s the pity.

Oh my. Someone’s been reading their Chick Tracts…

Nightmare World of Jack Chick

Where to begin…
  1. I forget the verse, but the original translates to “born of water and of the Spirit” NOT “born of water and born of the Spirit”
  2. What’s so bad about priests coming from Judaism. You DO realize Catholicism and Christianity began as a sect of Judaism and that Jesus was Jewish, right?
  3. We don’t repeat His Sacrifice, we re-present it. The sacrifice at every Mass is the same as the Sacrifice on Calvary
  4. IHS is actually the first 3 letters of Jesus in Greek. Ἰησοῦς. Or in all caps, ΙΗΣΟΥΣ. That’s were the H comes from. It’s actually an eta.
  5. So… What do YOU think Jesus was saying in John 6? He said Himself that He is the Bread of Life.
  6. You quoted it yourself. “Do this in memory of me” Where’s your Communion?
  7. So… How do you get that the Catholic Church is the Whore of Babylon? So many people claim this, but never do they support their point
  8. God told everyone Himself to build statues. Two examples: the Cherubim on the Arc of the Covenant and the fiery snake.
  9. If you think all pictures go against that commandment, then why do you carry money (pictures of past presidents) or keep pictures of family members?
