Why do the Jews start rocking in prayer?

Why do Jews start rocking in prayer?

Would love an answer!
 
It’s called ‘shokeling’ and it’s a very old practice.

As to its origins . . . . they lie in legend, ie people have been doing it so long all sorts of explanations have accrued.

I love to see Jews rocking in prayer at the Western Wall.
 
It’s not only the Jews but some of the Muslims do as well, for example when reciting the Quran. Perhaps it is a Semitic thing.

There are really no plausible explanations of why it is done except that the rhythmic movement aids in memorizing the text, it must also be a soothing thing when spending hours reciting a text.

I think this is the main reason…for memorization and recitation.
Many people use some sort of technique for this, I have hear spelling bee contestants will tap their foot or pat their thigh to keep a rythm that helps their spelling. I think it is the same concept.
 
I don’t know the answer. I have only seen it once. My boss’s father was a survivor of the concentration camps. [He got over here in the 50’s via the Russian camps.] I attended my boss’s son’s Bar Mitzvah. Max would go to the wall to pray and rocked.

As a part of the Bar Mitzvah the father gives the son a prayer shawl. At that point Max gave my boss a prayer shawl, since he had been unable to give it to him at his Bar Mitzvah.

My boss escaped to England, Max survived the camps, the rest of the family died in the camps. Our secretary once asked the boss how he escaped. He answered, “Rapidly”.

It was a fun job. There were only the three of us in the office. The secretary was active in the Assembly of God. The Air Force would have been appalled had they found out that we knew every Priest, Rabbi, Minister joke going.
 
I’ve herd it helps them keep the mind on God in prayer instead of the mind going elsewhere?

Rare Muslims do that, actually they took that habit from the Jews, however, there is a fatwa by our Saudi clerics committee prohibiting that practice because it’s considered Bidah.

Maybe you can research more about that legend and tell us the source, because some Muslims (including my father) told me once I was kid that the Angels who are shuckling those people, the Angels come from heavens to praises GOD with the people and when Angels flutter with their wings they cause the people to Shuckl.

Later, I discovered that it’s called “Bidah” in Islam, but still there are rare Muslims who use this hadith to justify that practice:

Sahih Bukhari, Volume 8, Book 75, Number 417:
Allah ‘s Apostle said, "Allah has some angels who look for those who celebrate the Praises of Allah on the roads and paths. And when they find some people celebrating the Praises of Allah, they call each other, saying, "Come to the object of your pursuit.’ " He added, “Then the angels encircle them with their wings up to the sky of the world.” He added. "(after those people celebrated the Praises of Allah, and the angels go back), their Lord, asks them (those angels)----though He knows better than them----‘What do My slaves say?’ The angels reply, 'They say: Subhan Allah, Allahu Akbar, and Alham-du-lillah, Allah then says ‘Did they see Me?’ The angels reply, ‘No! By Allah, they didn’t see You.’ …

hi kaninchen. could this be due to the meditative nature of the section of prayer in the Hebrew prayer book that is recited silently? i had to leave mine at home when i came into the military, and i cannot remember what this part of the prayer is called. many Catholics i know, use these prayer books for their own personal devotions along side the missal. Peace to you and yours. 🙂
