Why do the Readings at Mass not match my Bible?

Does anyone know why the readings you hear at Mass do not necessarily match the New American Bible? I have heard that some committee somewhere “edits” the scriptures from the New American Bible before they put them in the lectionary. Why is this done? What does this say about the New American Bible? What is the point of puting all of those Imprimaters on the New American Bible if some committee comes along and changes it anyway?

So what they are saying is that the New American Bible in its current form is not acceptable for liturgical use? Is that right?

Is the New American Bible going to be revised to correct these problems?

The Imprimature means that the book contains nothing that is contrary to Catholic faith and morals. It doesn’t certify that every word is an exact transcription of what was dictated by God.

A “fundamentalist” who tries to take the Bible literally is going to get into trouble with any English translation. From time to time the Bible is revised to more accurately reflect the original meaning of the Greek, Aramaic or Hebrew text. Some attampts are more successful than others, but as long as the result is not contrary to Catholic faith and morals, it can be given an Imprimature.
